Brett Favre's post-game press conference
FOXBOROUGH -- Comments from Brett Favre's post-game press conference, as transcribed by the Patriots' media relations staff (click full entry for complete press conference):
Q: Where does this win rank in your history as a player?
BF: It ranks right up there near the top. Being in the moment, it’s easy to say it may be at the top. It goes without saying how difficult it is to come here and win, not to mention the fact that the way we started versus the way regulation ended, they had all the momentum and every reason to win it. We could’ve easily folded. There were a lot of things in this game that happened based on the history, I’m sure most people were betting against us. We found a way to win the game and I think it says a lot about our team at this point. We’ve still got a lot of football left but we have to be proud of the way we played.
Q: On the 3rd and 15 play to Dustin Keller:
BF: I’d like to give you some secret, we just called all go, four guys running vertical. I happened to look over and saw Coach Belichick telling them to get back which is no secret. They got back but they pushed towards the slot and our two guys to the left they pushed that way, it wasn’t a blitz or anything like that, I won’t say blown coverage, maybe they just thought I’d look down the middle of the field. Believe me, I was going to just buy some time and run around and make something happen and I was probably shocked as anyone.
Q: What did you say to the team before overtime began?
BF: I didn’t say anything to be honest with you. What else is there to say, it’s like third and two, I think everyone in the building knew if we got a first down that it was over. I give the Patriots a lot of credit, I do. They had situations where I know they were thinking hey, it’s ours. It got to the point where there was nothing that needed to be said. We have a lot of veteran guys, guys that want to win and knew what was at stake. It was just a matter of making plays.
Q: What was the emotion like on the Jets sideline when the Patriots tied the game?
BF: Quiet. I couldn’t watch. I saw the replay. But believe me when you have Randy Moss, I don’t care what he’s done or hasn’t done until that clock is done. Until it’s over, when you got 81, anything can happen. Matt Cassel played one hell of a football game and I don’t know if you can make a better throw at the end of the game than he made, honestly. It was a great catch on Randy’s part but that ball was thrown -- I mean Ty Law has great coverage -- you can’t get any better than that throw. He [Matt Cassel] made some tremendous throws throughout the game. Fortunately we were able to win that game but emotion was – the tides had turned. We got the coin toss and after the first two plays I was like ‘oh boy here we go’. The crowd was into it, they were into it and it was one of those games.
Q: What does this win mean for the Jets going forward?
BF: Time will tell. I don’t know. Whatever happens from this point forward happens but it can’t hurt us. What are we, 7 and 3? What an unbelievable game and we’re 7 and 3. It wasn’t the Super Bowl. We’ve still got a lot of football left, but that was fun, it was fun. It was one game, a big one, I’ll say that. But I’ve been part of a lot of big wins and I’ve been on the opposite side of those types of wins or in that case losses. We have football left to play and you can easily forget about this game based on what you do from this point forward. Who knows what happens from this point forward but I think it does a lot for our team. It’s a big win but the Patriots still have a lot of football left, they’ll be right in the thick of it as always. We just gave ourselves a much better shot.
Q: (On Dustin Keller)
BF: I just think, because I was at the stage at one time, where you think you know but you don’t and here I am 18 years later and I think I know but I know I still don’t. I mean you never quite master the game. You never know what is going to happen. You never know when you number is called. I don’t even know if we know exactly how good he [Dustin Keller] can be or how we would use him. Some of those plays late in the game he was third and fourth in the read which you know he can’t control. The fact that he caught the ball in traffic, yeah he dropped the touchdown but he sure made up for it after that. He’s got good character, he works hard, he wants to be good. I know there are a lot of guys out there like that but good things happen to guys like that.
Q: How much urgency did you feel during overtime?
BF: Oh I felt like it’s either now or nothing. This is your one shot. They were rolling on offense, our defense was tired - it was all or nothing.
Q: Do you relish moments like this?
BF: Right now I’ll tell you all the things you want to hear. I was nervous as heck. I’m no different than anyone else. You know everyone’s coming up ‘hey this is where you do your thing’ and I’m thinking, my God, why can’t we make this easier? [laughter]. But it’s true, that’s what I’m capable of doing but believe me there was no one more nervous in this building than me.
Q: On the rivalry between the Patriots and Jets:
BF: I sensed the enthusiasm and for the most part the getting over the hump feeling. We also have guys that realize that it’s not over. It’s a big win, it was against the Patriots. Believe me, I know how big that is. But there’s still football left to play and we can not go through the rest of this season banking on what we did tonight. As great as it was, we have to enjoy it until Monday and get ready to play the next game.
Q: How do you think the Patriots will handle tonight’s loss?
BF: I think they’ll react the same way they’ve always reacted – by winning, by being positive, by doing the right things. They didn’t get to that point by doing something different. Believe me, they didn’t play bad, we didn’t play great, it was one heck of a football game. We had to play about that good to even get a shot. Good teams don’t come back like they did. You can say what you want, okay they’re over and done with and the Jets are this and that. I think it’s a great football game by two football teams, one that we know how good they’ve been, one that we’re wondering how good they can be. Nothing more than that, I think they’ll respond the way they’ve always responded. I’m just very fortunate that this team was on the good side of this win.
