Broadcast tandems
Greg Gumbel (play-by-play) and Dan Dierdorf (analysis) will call Sunday's game between the Patriots and Dolphins in Miami.
A look at the 1-2 broadcast tandems calling Patriots games this season:
Patriots-Chiefs: Greg Gumbel-Dan Dierdorf (CBS)
Patriots-Jets: Jim Nantz-Phil Simms (CBS)
Patriots-Dolphins: Ian Eagle-Solomon Wilcots (CBS)
Patriots-49ers: Dick Enberg-Randy Cross (CBS)
Patriots-Chargers: Al Michaels-John Madden (NBC)
Patriots-Broncos: Mike Tirico-Tony Kornheiser-Ron Jaworski (ESPN)
Patriots-Rams: Chris Rose-J.C. Pearson (Fox)
Patriots-Colts: Al Michaels-John Madden (NBC)
Patriots-Bills: Dick Enberg-Randy Cross (CBS)
Patriots-Jets: Bob Papa-Cris Collinsworth (NFL Network)
Patriots-Dolphins: Greg Gumbel-Dan Dierdorf (CBS)

Last time this crew called the game all they talked about was the new CBS Scene at Gillete Stadium ... it was a stupid 3 hour infomercial ... and Brady was lost for the season.
Last year we never got anything worse than Gumble & Dierdorf...
Gumble and Dierdof are my least favorite on this list...There are very few announcers that add much to the game, but these to really take something away...AWFUL.
As long as its nobody on the NFL network, I am fine with it
I don't know which is worse, the TV announcers (Gumble & Dierdorf) or the play by play "homers" on the radio!
The NFL needs to do something about the quality of football announcers. I'm guessing it's ultimately up to the networks but the lackluster announcers could quickly spoil the NFL's product.
Whoa, EV did you just take a shot at the Pats long time radio announcers Gil and Gino? I think you mistake their knowledge and expectations for this franchise for "homerism". They're consistently competent and prepared and I'd wager they're the fairest radio team in the NFL. Ever hear excerpts from a Steelers or Packers radio call? Right up there with the Yankee's radio gooey cheerleader squad of Sterling and Waldman (shudder).
At best, most NFL TV analysts are masters of what everyone just saw w/ Dierdof and Randy Cross leading the pack. Yet a couple of pleasant surprises this year:
- Chris Collingsworth, despite his annoying, preachy in-studio persona provided some decent, insightful analysis last Thu. He'd probably be the first to remind you, but he did predict that Moss would be open for tying TD based on the coverage.
- JC Pearson in the St. Louis game really did his homework on the 2008 Pats personnel and tendencies - admirably on the money for a NFC/Fox guy.
Wonder who Mike R. respects in this category?
Gumbel - Simms was the best, period!
Will we ever see it again?????
Turn down the tv, turn up the radio
Jon,
I was referring to the local announcers here, in South Florida. Sorry for the confusion.
I would love to get the radio feed with Gil and Gino!
I agree with mikeinNH. Santos and Cappelletti are top drawer. They're definitely PATs fans but they tell it like it is. I enjoy listening to them when the game isn't televised.
Collinsworth is hands down the worst. Total pats hater
EV:
I listen to them on the computer through NFL.com/Fieldpass. I think it's $9.95 a month or $30 for the whole season including playoffs.
Gotcha' EV, sorry you're subjected to the south Florida radio homers. I wonder if WBCN or patriots.com streams Pats radio feed online?
The radio v. TV audio delay may be a bummer, but at least you hear Gil's call of the personnel formations prior to the play - and usually for BOTH sides of the ball.
And, again, would somebody please explain to me why the AFL total points leader isn't enshrined in Canton?
Right on, gilandginofan: TDtTV, TUtR!
Does anyone know how to sync the WBCN radio broadcast with the HD broadcast from CBS? I'd love to listen to Gil and Gino over Blowhard Dierdorf any day!!
I actually like Dierdorf. I can tolerate his obsession with the offensive line, and he is sometimes willing to explain what's happening on the field. The master of the enlightening explanation was Madden at his best, but a few years ago Madden turned into a caricature of himself. He's since gotten better but very uneven.
As for Simms, he knows the game, but I can't get past his incessant needling of his broadcast partner. It's a little bit better now that he's working with Nantz instead of Gumbel but I still find it painful to listen to. I wish he'd play his petty dominance games on his own time, not mine.
The best news is that it's been forever since we had to put up with Paul Maguire, who always has a bad word for everybody.
Sean- I'm hoping someone can enlighten me, but unless you've got +$500 to spend on pro-audio gear to supplement your home stereo, you're pretty well stuck with the HD v. FM delay.
Amen to Norman R's assessments, and while annoyed w/ Dierdorf's often myopic OL obsession, I know from first hand accounts that he treats the broadcast tech crew and people in general well. He gets points for not being an egotistical jerk, unlike many of these TV prima donnas.
At the opposite end of the spectrum is Maguire
Here's a tough one: who's worst: yesterday's Maguire or today's Kornheiser?
