Defensive snapshot

Posted by Mike Reiss, Globe Staff November 14, 2008 11:15 AM

A look at the snaps played by Patriots defensive players in the team's 34-31 overtime loss to the Jets, which can sometimes help explain how different defenders are being utilized:

  • OLB Mike Vrabel -- 77 of 77
  • S James Sanders -- 77 of 77
  • S Brandon Meriweather -- 77 of 77
  • CB Ellis Hobbs -- 75 of 77
  • ILB Jerod Mayo -- 73 of 77
  • OLB Pierre Woods -- 72 of 77
  • CB Deltha O'Neal -- 71 of 77
  • DL Richard Seymour -- 66 of 77
  • LB Tedy Bruschi -- 55 of 77
  • NT Vince Wilfork -- 55 of 77
  • NT Mike Wright -- 53 of 77
  • DE Jarvis Green -- 44 of 77
  • LB Gary Guyton -- 23 of 77
  • CB Jason Webster -- 22 of 77
  • DL Le Kevin Smith -- 5 of 77
  • CB Jonathan Wilhite -- 2 of 77

(two defensive holding penalties, which technically don't count as plays, are included)

ANALYSIS: One of the big questions entering the game was how the Patriots would replace Adalius Thomas. The answer was that Pierre Woods took over most of Thomas' duties, playing OLB in the base 3-4 alignment, a WLB role in the 4-3 alignment, as well as playing in the nickel (5 defensive backs). ... Also, Mike Vrabel went wire to wire, which reflected the trickle-down effect of losing Thomas as Vrabel had not played every snap in a game this season prior to Thursday night. ... The Patriots stayed in their base 3-4 defense for the majority of snaps, which also seemed to be tied to Thomas's absence as the defense lost some of its versatility. Even when the Jets went to spread formations, the team stayed in the base at times. ... The Patriots' nickel package was utilized 22 out of 77 snaps, and it was consistent personnel-wise with two defensive linemen (Jarvis Green/Richard Seymour), four linebackers (Pierre Woods/Jerod Mayo/Mike Vrabel/Gary Guyton) and five defensive backs (Ellis Hobbs/Deltha O'Neal/Brandon Meriweather/James Sanders/Jason Webster). ... For the second game in a row, the Patriots did not utilize a dime package (6 defensive backs). ... Safeties James Sanders and Brandon Meriweather have played every snap in each of the last four games, as the their playing time has spiked with Rodney Harrison out. ... The one personnel package that LB Jerod Mayo was not a part of was the 4-3 alignment, which was used four times. ... The 77 snaps defended were a season high, topping the 66 defended against the Rams.

    1. If the Browns fire Romeo, we need him back next year as DC. Nothing against Dean Pees, but It just hasn't felt the same the past 3+ seasons on defense.
"It's nothing personal. It's strictly business."

    1. Pierre Woods must be tired. He has never played this much.

    1. As an official armchair GM I would also favor bringing back Romeo or promoting Capers and demoting Pees.

I know nothing except what the tv and box scores indicate but I have to agree with Burkie. The D has not performed in critical points during the last 3 seasons and someone has to take the blame. Situational D used to be a strong point for the team.

    1. One could argue that Crennel had the benefit of better players. It's easier when you have Ty Law [in his prime] and Tebucky Jones, then havng Ellis Hobbs and a few rookies.

    1. I think the D's problems have more to do with age than coaching. BB has a tighter grasp on it than the offensive side of the ball. I think the last couple of years the D has been a little to old and slow. This year they are young and inexperienced.
If we can stay together and healthy next year with Brady and company plus this now young experienced D, WOW!

    1. our d needs an overhaul. we need a shut down corner and a star safety. our d line played well and was always close to favre but our 3rd down D was nonexistant.

    1. I think any team would be decimated with the kind of injuries we have on D. Ty Warren, AD, Rodney Harrison, our injuries at CB. The coaching staff is just struggling to get 11 men out there on D. Give them a break. We're going to get healthier and better. The special teams unit needs to step up though.

    1. Mike Reiss: Do you have access to, or can you tell us how to find out, the Patriots defense's statistics on stopping third-and-long? Particularly third-and-really-long, like beyond ten yards. I swear that this year and last, and maybe beyond that, the D has given up more third-and-really-long plays than it has stopped. Probably a misperception on my part, but they sure do give up a lot of them. Thanks.

    1. Alex,
Merriweather = star safety in process!
      Wheatly= Shutdown Corner in process!

As an official armchair GM I must say that rico has finally made a good point. The D is in transition. The old and slow D is becoming younger before our eyes in midseason. Which although painful to watch this year, will pay off big in the future. Its exciting watching the younger guys develop. But to not expect a dropoff is crazy.

My problem with Pees is because he hasn't gotten it done for 3 years now when the game is on the line. Way too many final drive losses in recent years.

    1. Mayo is a freak

    1. Time for Pees to go. Sorry. The defense hasn't had that swagger in three years, so you have to start with the head of that dept. Time for a much needed change. I'm all for promoting Capers or Getting Romeo back, once he's fired of course.

Also, is there a bigger liability than Oneal and Hobbs in the backfield? Ugh!

    1. I have a mancrush on Jerod Mayo.

    1. Alex--I gotta disagree with you on Meriweather being a star safety in progress. I'd agree if the NFL were a two-hand touch league, but if Meriweather doesn't learn how to tackle, and quickly, he ain't gonna make it long in this league.
