Former Pats pick doesn't emerge

Posted by Mike Reiss, Globe Staff November 2, 2008 11:25 AM

When the Patriots waived DL Kareem Brown last November to make room for WR Troy Brown on the 53-man roster, the team was favoring the present over the future.

Kareem Brown was a 2007 fourth-round draft choice out of the University of Miami who showed potential to join the team's already deep defensive line rotation. Meanwhile, Troy Brown was in his final year with the team, and the Patriots were already deep at receiver.

The Jets claimed Kareem Brown on waivers at the time, which added another layer of scrutiny to the Patriots' decision.

Often times, when those decisions are made, they are seldom revisited unless the player goes on to big things.

In this case, looking at it one year later, the Patriots' personnel evaluation seemed to be correct (other than drafting Brown in the first place, of course).

Kareem Brown, who had yet to emerge with the Jets, was waived yesterday.

  1. I suppose he was the "best player on the board" but knowing who else was picked after him and what they are doing in the league would be nice. Certainly, nobody can expect a "perfect draft" every year but my guess is if your already strong in that particular area (dline) he should stand out from the remaining picks in the crowd. Does anyone know where you could research who was taken after brown in that draft?

  1. Is this a funeral for Kareem Brown's career or an opportunity for someone else to pick him up? He might be a good addition for as at this point - we have been playing a lot of four man lines. Of course, we have several other defensive needs over D Line right now...

  1. And here I was last year critical of the decision to go with Troy over youth. Guess nobody is gonna offer me a job evaluating NFL talent...

  1. While there is certainly a chance to evaluate the Patriots' personnel decisions in light of his release, there is a similar opportunity to examine and critique the Jets' habit of "dumpster diving," as it were, the Patriots' cast-offs in what some might perceive as a part of a desperate plan to become "New England South." Emulation may be flattery, but in the Jets it is rather pathetic.

Call me a hater, 'cause I am.

  1. Do you think he was released based solely on his football abilities? Wasn't he suspended or punished in some way during the first few days of camp last year? Not sure it was ever released what it was that he did, but maturity was an issue if I remember correctly? Anyone know anything more about what happened?

  1. Hi rickb101 and Sonny_Corlione. I remember hearing Belichick
mention something at a speaking engagement that Brown might have lacked the
necessary work ethic. Something tells me they're more committed to someone
like Titus Adams on the practice squad than claiming a player like Brown.
On revisiting the draft, here is a good link from NFL.com:

  1. Looking back at the draft Kevin Boss from Giants who was picked after Kareem Brown seem to be one of the few who emerged.
