Every Tuesday on Boston.com, questions from Patriots fans are answered as part of a weekly mailbag. This week's mailbag has been posted and includes some of the following topics:

  • The future of Matt Cassel, who is scheduled for unrestricted free agency after the season. Might the Patriots use the franchise tag on him?

  • A look back at Ty Law's one-year deal with the Jets, which looks like a bargain.

  • In high-stakes games of late, why can't the defense come up with the big play in critical situations?

  • Addressing the perception that the Patriots' defense is old and slow.

  • A closer look at tiebreakers in the playoff race.

    1. I think it's imperative that the Pats keep Cassel around - for insurance. I'm not comfortable that Brady really has his football career as his priority at the moment. He has the surgery out in LA away from the Pats organization and gets a serious infection from this surgery in the process, which puts back his rehab time. We were told he was back in Boston rehabbing, but just today we see Brady limping out of Gisele's NYC place. Unless and until Brady can show he's serious about coming back from this surgery, there is no way we should get rid of Cassel.

    1. I can't for a second buy into the belief that just because a man has spent a night of his recovery staying with his girlfriend (particularly her!) means he doesn't care about football. If anything, i imagine he's spending some time away from the team etc because seeing the other guys running around out there and playing football must be driving him crazy. Recovery from inhury requires you to have your head straight, and sitting in a big house on your own wouldn't help anything. Also, I'm pretty sure he hasn't forgotten the last time he played a full game and wants another chance.

And really, does anyone htink Cassel can be a real, bona-fide playmaking QB? The guy can't consistently throw deep. He has a very fast short-intermediate passing range, but how many completions has he thrown where the ball travels more than 20 metres in the air (As opposed to short passes which turn into big plays). Let him walk.

And if Pees leaves this summer, how about Romeo Crennel coming back in as Defensive co-ordinator?

    1. cassel will be a starting qb somewhere next year, not NE. if romeo is available after this season, sign him.

    1. As always, NE produces the biggest bunch of yahoo fans in the country. Put together a couple of OK games and you are ready for Canton. Why can't these people get a clue. This guy was and is a backup for a reason.

    1. Guys all this is ridiculos, Tom Brady is the best QB in the league, the only one came close him is Peyton Manning. Matt Cassel is a backup, he can play in outher team, but he never can take Tom Brady place, with Tom 100%. Tom stay follow the team agend, the team pass the weekend off, so Tom pass off too. Rehabing was not a nice thing he need a time off. And pass time with girlfriend is a good thing for him. Imagine how was dificult for him see the others guys training for games and him can't play, not because he don't want, but because his can't. The fact he have a beautifuk GF and a adorable son don't mean he don't like play football anymore.

    1. You all just keep those rose-colored glasses on. Brady showed no dedication to his off-season conditioning program. He did not bother to show up to any pre-season games. He had his surgery done by the "doctor to the celebs" in California, not in Boston where the Patriots could make sure he had the best care and as such had to have several additional operations and an infection on top of that. Instead of 100% dedication to rehab in Boston, Brady hops off to NYC with the g/f. So, if you all think Brady is going to be 100% next season, well, I've got some oceanfront property in Denver - as the saying goes.

    1. Paula you just keep getting your sports information from the inside track or you tube. First off, noone actually knows what goes on inside Gillette as Mike Reiss will tell you. He didn't bother to show up for any pre season games? I believe I and 60,000 + fans saw him on the sidelines talking with Moss & other players. Maybe if the Pats don't make the playoffs we can get these bandwagon ,KNOW NOTHING fans off this site. Paula, try PFT.com, there are a bunch of morons who troll that site that will agree with you.
