Matt Light: What's next?

Posted by Mike Reiss, Globe Staff November 24, 2008 04:58 PM

One question that seemed to be on the minds of Patriots' followers today is: What penalty might left tackle Matt Light expect for his role in a fight with Dolphins LB Channing Crowder that led to both players being ejected?

Per the NFL, all on-field fights are reviewed for potential discipline, which is standard procedure. NFL spokesman Greg Aiello told the Associated Press that the incident would be reviewed by director of football operations Gene Washington, but that no decision would be made today.

The league's player policy manual has a schedule of fines. For fighting, it is a minimum $10,000 for a first offense, and a minimum of $25,000 for a second offense. Other forms of discipline, including higher fines or suspension, may be imposed, based on the circumstances of the particular violation.

One of the recent examples came in a Jaguars-Bengals game in which Cincinnati's Andrew Whitworth and Jacksonville's John Henderson were both ejected for fighting. The league levied heavy fines in that situation, but no suspensions.

  1. While I'm sure Matt Light regrets potentially depriving his team from its starting left tackle against the Steelers next week, I for one was encouraged to see the Pats re-establish their toughness yesterday against a squad that man-handled them in September.

Matt Light vs. BigMouth Channing sent a message that reminded me just a little of Parish vs. Lambier, or Varitek vs. A-Rod. (although I'm not comparing Channing to the grudgingly admitted talents of "gutless" Lambier or Alex the Beautiful).

Could only have been better if Light had wailed on Loud Mouth Supreme Joey Porter, but our pal Joey was rather hard to find most of the day, wasn't he?

  1. Porter would have run BEFORE the punches. Wouldn't have happened Mike.

  1. You just knew that the imaturity of the Dolphins would bring out the punks when things were going bad. Penalties, poor play, fighting = Punk Crowder.

PS Matt light whipped you and you got what you deserved.

  1. The picture on the front page of the Globe's sports section showing Light vs. Crowder did indeed bring back memories of 'Varitek vs. Jeter in 2004. Funny, but several members of the Red Sox that year mentioned that confrontation was one of the more critical and galvanizing moments of that season. I wonder if depending on this season's final outcome, members of the Patriots won't recall this moment as one of those turning points.

  1. Should have waled on Ellis Hobbs. He's the largest threat to the Pats...Did you see that missed tackle insidew the 20 or the way Ginn beat him? Can't play with him...can't coach him ...can't win with him

  1. With Sheriff Goodell running the show, Light is guaranteed a suspension.

  1. Hear hear Mike, considering how it was Crowder who speared Welker in the first half, it was nice to see Light dishing out some payback. I bet this is the kind of thing everyone on the team has to be all contrite about in public but in private are really happy about.

  1. I think Goodell needs to consider the history here. Both in terms of what happened on the play in question, and Matt Light's history. Obviously, the play will result in a serious fine, but I think if he suspends Matt Light, Goodell will be over-doing it and being arbitrary.

He likes big penalties against Adam Jones and Bill Bellicheck, but let's Marvin Harrison walk? He fines Wilfork and threatens suspension, but it's ok for Hines Ward to break someone's jaw? I don't even need to mention the Brady situation.

Hopefully, Goodell will realize that the best punishment is one that punishes the player for inappropriate conduct, but not the team, the fans and the entire season simply because one player made one bad choice. I don't have a lot of confidence, however, that the NFL will resist the temptation to make an example of the patriots because their success has made them the team America loves to hate.

  1. Actually Porter would have had a better chance because Light wouldn't have had any dreads to pull...and I don't think that fight had anything to do with re-establishing any toughness...the game was practically over. And pulling someone's hair and attacking them while they have their helmet off and yours is still on isn't very tough to me...and yes I'm a Pats fan.

  1. Matt Light is a punk. Why does a 6"5 310 lb guy have to pull hair? Typical Patriots behavior.

Belicheat better get the 3rd stringer ready because Pittsburgh is going to put a hurting on Cassell after Light gets suspended.

  1. Aww,, com'on Light pushed the helmet off,, then grabbed hair and started punching he had to know he was not hitting his helmet... This was no doubt intentional on his part this is not a part of footbal,,,pats already have a rep of cheating and foul play... even Belicheck said he didn't like it.. Light shouldn't play another game this year period... pats= good sportsmen????

  1. Patriots are the biggest cheaters in the league. Bellicheat is a disgrace and Matt Light is a girl. Pulling another man's hair and then punching them in the back of the head is just plain cowardly and G4y. espcially while he still had his helmet on. The only reason they won is because Bellicheat and the rest of the losers were on their knees before the game sucking the refs dry. Moss your not that good if you have to push off everytime to get an advantage. Classless losers

  1. the tek and A-rod scuffle was the best cause you could see A-rod saying F^&* you to tek right before he got a face full of catchers mask from tek.

  1. Great info Mike. It's incredible in Boston these days when a reporter actually looks into something(the fight), looks at past incidents and the repercusions(previous penalties), and reports them. Unlike other media members who spout at the drop of a hat, "He's getting suspended!"(Chicken Little)...

  1. Mike could you give more detail on what happened? From what I see on Tivo it looks like Crowder when in an attempt to rush to block on an extra point attempt actually lowers his helmet hitting Matt Light in the facemask with the top of his helmet. Crowder has his arms down at his side. Also while Light and Crowder is the story everyone is talking about. Ayodele #51 from the Dolphins is the one that has to be pulled off #70 Mankins.

  1. Hi Rog. I haven't heard from Light or Crowder, so this is just an educated guess. I think Light probably felt Crowder led with his helmet, and rocked him back. At the same time, some players mentioned that Crowder was talking all game.

  1. Thanks Mike
I was just wondering because blocking with the top of helmet and not using your hands at all just seems like a way to start something as opposed to a bull rush or a spin move.
