Offensive participation
A look at the snaps played by offensive skill-position players in the Patriots' 34-31 overtime loss to the Jets:
(snaps include an illegal formation penalty on Wes Welker, a 2-point conversion, and an illegal contact penalty; snaps do not include a false start on Dan Koppen)
ANALYSIS: The Patriots settled into a 3 WR/1 TE/1 RB package for their final 51 plays, which spiked the playtime numbers of the players in that package -- Randy Moss, Jabar Gaffney, Wes Welker, Benjamin Watson and Kevin Faulk. ... Randy Moss came off for one play, in the third quarter. ... The 67 snaps were a season high for Jabar Gaffney; his previous high was 53, in the season opener. ... Kevin Faulk's 67 were also a season high; his previous high was 44, against the Rams. ... Fellow RBs BenJarvus Green-Ellis and Sammy Morris did not play on offense from the second quarter on. ... The four snaps were a season low for FB Heath Evans, as the Patriots were spreading the field with receivers and weren't going to the two-back power running route.

Why do you insist on providing this nonsense on "positional groupings" and how many plays each man played? Nobody has a clue what it really means, and you can't explain to folks why it matters. Formulaic, mindless reporting. Here's an assignment: Since Belichick won't tell you himself, why don't you set out to determine which defensive players are any good and which are overrated.
FYI,
About franchising Cassel. The average of the top 5 QB's is $14.6M. So please lets stop throwing that out there. It is almost exactly what they are paying Tom Brady.
Manning, Peyton - 18,700,000
Brady, Tom - 14,626,720
Palmer, Carson - 13,980,000
Manning, Eli - 12,916,666
Favre, Brett - 12,800,000
isnt matt ryan the highest paid?
Why in the world would anyone franchise Matt Cassel? I wouldnt franchise Matt Cassel if I didnt have Tom Brady. He is NOT a franchise quarterback and he never will be. With that said, he is a good quarterback and will start for someone next year, just not us. People please give this a break.
You either sign Cassel to a very lucrative contract or you franchise Cassel because some Dumb A$$ team like Detroit, San Fran, Tampa, Kansas City will be so stupid to over pay us to get him once TB is sound and ready. There will be some teams just peeing all over themselves in excitement to get him away from us once we let it be known he can be had for trade as they will see him as a quality step up over what they now have.. Otherwise you just let him go for nothing and that is the most stupid discussion out there. Not Franchise him Please you DOLTS....Any other discussion shows the extreme stupidity of the people writing it.
Lunk, did you ever stop to consider that maybe playing time (ie, number of snaps on the field) is a great way to figure out if a player is overrated or not? The people who make the decision to put them on the field know the most about players' qualities, or lack of them.
"Formulaic" is the wrong word. This is called "objective" reporting, and it's hard to come by. Go take a look at ESPN.com, it might be more your flavor.

You think the teams in the NFL are stupid enough to throw away two first round draft pick. I can't remember it ever happening, you may get a trade simalar to Deon Branch, at best.
But talk about jumping the gun. The guy has yet to beat a playoff calabur team. He has some of the best players in the league around him. His resume includes 9 starts 4 of which he lost!
BB "Let's not fit him for the jacket just yet!"
Alex,
I think you are right, those were last years (2007) numbers, so it would cost even more to franchise him. Ya, he's worth 20M/yr. It's amazing the stupidity of some of these people.
I guaranty the guy won’t be a starter by the end of the 2009 season! Once teams have enough film on him and start game planning for him thing will change. Also without freaks like Moss (not many players make that catch the other night) and Welker making him look even better. I look for him to start get hammered when runs up the middle now. Teams have seen it and will game plan to stop it. Most of his best play came because he was too afraid to pass ball and took off running. With that taken away, he will be forced into making more mistakes
