The Patriots announced the following transactions today:
Rookie CB Terrence Wheatley has been placed on season-ending injured reserve with a wrist injury. Wheatley hurt the wrist Nov. 2 against Indianapolis and had not played since.
TE Tyson DeVree has been promoted from the practice squad to the active roster. He will wear No. 85.
Rookie LB Darrell Robertson has been signed to the practice squad. Robertson (6-4, 246) was signed as a rookie free agent by the Cowboys and was released Aug. 30. He then played in two games for the Edmonton Eskimos of the Canadian Football League before being released.
That's why you don't draft a guy with a terminator arm
Gick: wrong arm.
Good thing we didn't waste any money by going out and getting Ty Law.
we did not need ty law . we have a shutdown corner in delta or is it hobbs..... corey webster must be coming on
Actually, if he had a terminator arm, that would be extremely beneficial and he would never be hurt.
Seems a bit strange to promote a TE to the active roster rather than a defensive player especially given Adalius is seriously injured. Why not Vince Redd or some other defensive player? Any insight Reiss?
Now he will have two terminator arms.....
sigh not another one...we are probably going to need to try and pick up another good cb in the draft this year seeing as how he cant stay healthy and hobbs is a free agent after next year...
Gick, it was his other wrist that got injured. But thank you for that.
injuries are part of the nfl
Freak injuries can happen to any player in football gickstir, it's not table tennis.
should have paid law
while I have man love for him, why isn't Kraft getting us some players who aren't wheel chair bound?
Ty Law said the Patriots offered him MORE MONEY but chose to sign with the JETS because they had a better chance to win this year. Another thing we have 3 Superbowl trophies sitting in Gilliete Stadium, did anyone see that coming 15 or 20 yrs ago? You guys sound like Dallas Cowboy fans! Enjoy our success and let the cards fall where they may this year. Turn on a Bruins game now and then if you want a first place team. Mr.Kraft thank you for all you and your family have done for the fans of New England.
PS- Maybe lower the price of tickets for the next year or so until the market turns around.
gickster, wheatley might be the only one of the corners thats even worth keeping around.
No! They should have signed A. Samuel two year ago before he hit FA. He is the first ex-Pat to make an impact after leaving. Those are the player you need to keep around. Law had one descent year with the Jet and he was to old them to re-up. Samuel's should have been our shut down corner for the next 5 or 6 years.
He already has 4 pics, 19 Pass Def'd, and 27 Tackles. Nobody on the Pat's is even close.
When Ellis Hobbs is your best CB you are in deep trouble. The coaching staff should have seen this coming when they let Samuel go (a decision I can understand given Samuel's asking price and arrogance). They are just going to have to swallow overpaying for a FA CB. And drafting one early. Hobbs should be a nickle back. He's convinced he's a lot better than he is. At least Samuel could play.
How do you guys knows which arm it is? I didn't think they ever released that kind of info
And sure, injuries are part of the NFL, but this many?
CB is the only position besides QB where Belichick/Pioli have never used a 1st round pick, made a trade, or made a significant free agent signing
That's why we always have no name scrubs back there
They put no effort into getting anyone good
First off Tony you said it perfectly enjoy the success this organization had and let them rebuild with some youth on defense. Everyone forgets about the Bruins because they have been the least successful as of recent years and thats sad because they deserve their credit. Also if Hobbs is your #1 there is an issue, Im not saying hes bad but hes a nickelback or #2 at best on some other teams.
I doubt they will look to the draft for a corner early unless there is just one you cant pass on. Look for nnamdi asamougha to hit the market, I dont think the raiders will be franchising him and it looks like he will be the top corner available in FA. Hes one of the top corners in the game IMO. They are gonna have to pay though if they want another shutdown corner, but I think after this year its obvious they need it.
..gick.
Drew Bledsoe?
Your theory goes out the window. Goodjob.
No depth at corner. Yet they risk Hobbes health having him play special teams. Don't care what he averages on returns. What is the plan if he gets injured.
They are falling like flies in Foxboro ... injury, after injury, each game I'm shocked to see another player walking down the tunnel, and out with another season ending injury. The JETS and TITANS are the heathest teams in the AFC and they will be playing for the AFC Chapionship in Nashville, and the Patriots will still be tinkering around rookies on the Practice squad .... Looks like old Billy B picked the wrong Golden Golpher from Minnesota at running back .... Lawrence Maroney is your second bust ... Chad Jackson was your first ....
nnamdi isnt coming to the pats sorry if anyone thinks that they will never pay the huge price tag he will require. I think they will go after someone like Chris Gamble or Dunta Robinson both of them are young and very good. Dunta Robinson especially he has been injured a bit so we may get him cheap and he has huge potential. I could also see us drafting a cb if one of the top 3 guys slips to our spot in the first if not maybe with one of our second round picks, ideally id like olb in first to replace vrabel/safety in second to replace rodney then best available
I hope DeVree protects the ball better than Watson,he has a drop a game and that fumble in the 3rd qtr killed them..This is nothing new with this guy.I dont care what his final stats were his unforced fumble killed them..
mark, belichick/pioli didn't draft beldsoe, he was there before them.
also, ty law was my favorite player when he was on the team, but even i didn't want the pats to sign him. we desperately need some talent in the secondary, but the money he would command (even though not as much as when he left the pats) could be better used on a younger player
The patriots have always taken no name cornerbacks and changing them into stars asking for high salaries, not realizing that it's the system that is making them great.
Not sure why people aren't having a little more faith in BB. He comes through again and again. I guess we need something to talk about though :)
BLesoe was a Parcells pick
Tony,
If I want to watch a first place team, I'll first turn on the Celtics before I ever come close to the Bruins. The C's are champs, the B's are chumps.
Seriously, every year we go through this with the Patriots secondary. I'd like a stat since 2001 to see if the Pats lead the lead in man games lost in the secondary. Just use every draft pick on CB's and Safeties next year.
Darrell Robertson? Seriously? He's not good enough for the Edmonton Eskimos but he's good enough to make the Pats practice squad? Yikes.
On another note, I can't believe how many injuries the Pats have had to endure this year. It's a shame to hear about Wheatley, but is anyone suprised after he had three surgeries on his right wrist already? Now he's having problems with the other wrist. I hope he comes back next year and is the shutdown corner they expected when he was drafted, but I have a feeling this will be another second round whiff.
whr, don't forget Brandon "pinball" Meriwether. He's our third bust.
Mike,
Meriweather has played well this year. The guy has three picks and is pace to get 5 - 6 picks this season. This is pretty good for a second year Safety. I have no problems with the way he tackles either - but he is 20 pounds lighter than Harrison, so you cannot expect him to be as big a hitter. I concede that the secondary has played inconsistently this season, but they are better than some of you give them credit for.
Mike (not Reiss, the dude who commented above me) -
Meriweather a bust?
Knee-jerk!
He has been great thus far in his young career. Although he dropped some INTs, he really came on strong last season and has carried that success into this season.
Wow, one poor tackle and people are labeling him a bust... wow
Scrub's to Star's ugh???? in the pats secondary
This olny a few days after the 3rd and 15 pick-up in OT by Favre
In the old Romeo system scub's to Star's sure, but today not so sure
Does anyone know where James Sanders big play is? If it's over the top? I don't see him when Hobb's is beat deep / I don't remember seeing him on a bunch of blitz's or stuffing runner's / Havn't seen him inflict pain on people coming over the middle. Not trying to stab him just asking?
I think the young safeties will both turn out to be good players
it's the CBs that need some serious work
At minimum they need to use their 1st round pick in 2009 on one
I definitely want to get on board the defending Merriweather bandwagon- sure, he wasn't great as a rookie, but rookie defensive backs are rarely stars. Chris Horton at the Redskins is getting mad reviews, but the reality is he makes 1 or 2 big plays a game, then blows 4/5 simple things. Reminds me of Roy Williams.
Merriweather is a different guy to Rodney, but then again there never has been anyone like Rodney before (only member of the 30/30 club). But with his athletic ability (and the fact that he now understands that he is allowed catch the ball), he could become a very good coverage free safety. (Yes, I know he is playing strong side, but I still think he would be better on the other side)
As for Wheatley to IR, come on! Either he's injured or they want to red shirt him for the second half of the season. Because we've never seen Patriots rookies go on IR. before!
The pats consistent winning has turned lots of fans' brains into jello.
Has anyone checked into possibly signing Roosevelt Colvin to replace Thomas? That is if Colvin is healthy.
dunta robinson sounds like their guy, he is injury prone, should fit right in.
merriweather had a very bad game against the jets but i wouldn't write him off either. he is better suited for fs than ss.
No Mike, you're the first person to think of that
merriweather is def a fs he is only playing ss because of sanders. Sanders wll either be gone next year or signed as depth imo i see them getting a ss in the draft because their is so much depth.
