Positional groupings

Posted by Mike Reiss, Globe Staff November 10, 2008 10:50 AM

A look at the positional groupings utilized by the Patriots in their 20-10 win over the Bills:

  • 3 WR/1 TE/1 RB -- 30 of 76 snaps
  • 1 WR/2 TE/1 FB/1 RB -- 17 of 76
  • 2 WR/2 TE/1 RB -- 14 of 76
  • 4 WR/1 RB -- 10 of 76
  • 3 TE/1 FB/1 RB -- 5 of 76

(snaps don't include the final three kneel-downs, defensive holding penalty included)

ANALYSIS: The 76 total snaps were the second most this season, behind the 81 against the 49ers. ... The Patriots used the 4 WR/1 RB package and the 1 WR/2 TE/1 FB/1 RB package more than they had in any other game, which reflected the diversity and balance within their plan -- some spread formations (40 with three- and four-wides), some compact grind-it-out formations (36 with multiple tight ends).

    1. Mike,

Can you please post what kind of schedule the Patriots are likely to encounter this week with it being a 3 day work week.

I assume there is no day off for the players and when does the game plan get installed ?

      Thanks !

    1. Hi Blair. Players are in today, probably going over the Bills game and quickly turning the page to the Jets. Players are in Tuesday and Wednesday as well, so no full days off.

    1. Thanks, Mike, and nice job on the A.D. analysis. Even if he is able to avoid the IR, we're looking at playoff return, best case scenario.
Looking forward to your speculation of the likely gameplan vs. the Jets and how it will differ from what we saw yesterday, especially given the short week.
The more Farve throws, the better for the Pats. Maybe this is one team they like their chances in a relatively higher scoring game?

    1. Pats beat the Jets in Week #2 on the road by:

      A) running the ball and making short throws and lots of screen passes to Welker ... and Cassel has only gotten better each and every week

      B) Playing great run defence and forcing Favre to run for his life

      C) Look for more of the same, although the jets are going to let Favre throw it all over the yard this time, which should lead to a couple of INT's and a Pats win
