Positional groupings

Posted by Mike Reiss, Globe Staff November 24, 2008 11:28 AM

A look at the positional groupings utilized by the Patriots in their 48-28 win over the Dolphins:

  • 3 WR/1 TE/1 RB – 40 of 72 snaps
  • 4 WR/1 RB – 13 of 72
  • 2 WR/2 TE/1 RB – 11 of 72
  • 1 WR/2 TE/1 FB/1 RB – 7 of 72
  • 3 TE/1 FB/1 RB – 1 of 72

(snaps include holding penalties on Stephen Neal and Dan Koppen)

ANALYSIS: This was a spread-the-field approach, as 53 of the team’s 72 snaps came with three- or four-receiver packages. … Even when the Patriots had their 2 WR/2 TE package on the field, they often spread things out. … The 13 snaps out of the 4 WR/1 RB package were a season high, eclipsing the 10 snaps out of that package against the Jets Nov. 13. … The Patriots used the 1 WR/2 TE/1 FB/1 RB package – which is often called upon in short-yardage situations -- just once before their final kill-the-clock drive (11:19 left in the fourth quarter). … The final snap of the game came out of the 3 TE/1 FB/1 RB package, at the goal-line.
