Practice squad OL departs

The Patriots lost practice squad OL Jacob Bender, as Bender has been signed to the 49ers' 53-man roster.

The Patriots now have an open spot on their practice squad.

OK, I am confused. How can a practice squad player be "lost" to another team's roster? Is it a trade or do the Pat's get at least some compensation for this? Wasn't Bender under contract?
