Randy Moss's fine rescinded

Posted by Mike Reiss, Globe Staff November 10, 2008 03:04 PM

The NFL has rescinded Randy Moss's $20,000 fine for comments regarding officiating, a league spokesman confirmed today. Ray Anderson, the league's executive vice president of football operations, was responsible for rescinding the fine.

Erik Scalavino of Patriots.com first noted earlier today that Moss's fine had been rescinded.

Moss made the comments -- which were more innocuous than harsh -- following the Patriots' 18-15 loss to the Colts last Sunday night.

In fact, Moss started his comments last week by saying, "This is one of those funny games where you really got to watch what you say because fines will be out on Wednesday, so I'll leave it at that."

But he didn't leave it at that, adding:

"I think a lot of guys are really down just for the fact that you let a game like this slip," said Moss. "Like I said earlier, when things happen you got to watch what you say. Guys don't want to get fined.

"There were some real iffy calls out there, and it's just some of the things that you wished wouldn't have happened. Good calls and bad calls are part of the game, so you got to live and die with them."

NFL spokesman Greg Aiello confirmed Sunday it was the "iffy calls" characterization that drew the league's attention.

  1. What a mess Goodell has created. The NFL is a superior product that needs better leadership.

  1. I don't understand this at all? How did this seem worth $20,000 two days ago and now its worth 0? Did they get a clip of him saying something else that mysteriously vanished after the fact? It was a bull honky fine to begin with but it almost makes me madder to know the league is handing out fines without confirming they actually want to give them. That's two fines rescinded this week. Next up David Thomas I would assume.

PS. Moss gets fined $20,000 for saying "iffy" and no one even mentions Marvin Harrison's gun incident.

  1. The fact that the NFL would hand out a fine in the first place for using the phrase "iffy calls" is pathetic on the league's part. I understand that they have to defend referees and the calls they make, but to take it to the extreme where a coach or player can't say ANYTHING negative is horrible. In Moss's case, it's not like he blamed the referees for the Patriots' loss; to the contrary, he acknowledged that good and bad calls are a part of the game, and you have to live with them, no matter what.

When a player or coach really does call out a referee or the league for something they've done wrong, they are usually pointing out something that the sports media is already talking about, i.e. Ed Hochuli's week 2 debacle. The league isn't protecting its image and integrity by fining dissident players (fines that are minuscule and insignificant to multimillionaires). They are tarnishing their image with bad publicity. Why not focus on something more productive, like revamping the inane rules about which plays can and can't be challenged?

  1. I thought the Thomas fine was rediculous as well. It was a late hit but otherwise a clean hit (not high, not low, not in the back). The team was penalized and they may well have lost the game because of it. Why was a fine needed? Dumb.

  1. OK, so now we have a mea culpa on Moss' non-statement to add to the whole witch hunt last year over Spygate, which of course turned up nothing. For my money, maybe Roger Goodell is over his head and should be fired as the commish. Yeah the Pats got exonerated about Spygate but not after a brutal media feeding frenzy that was aimed at Belichick and the whole Pats organization. I didn't see any apologies offered after that. This is a disgrace. Maybe the NFL should try hiring full-time refs instead of moonlighters. What, they don't have enough cash on hand?

  1. Hopefully the Commish is starting to take some heat on all these ridiculous fines he's been hitting players with.
I think the owners need to go back and reconsider this guy. He has not done a very good job at all, not in any area of the sport. IMO.

  1. WOW... they almost fined him over THAT???

The NFL is becoming a dictatorship.

  1. I hate to agree with that idiot Joey Porter from Miami but Moss gets fined for saying "iffy", and the dude from the Jaguars caught with cocaine is playing everyday with no consequences? What a total JOKE!

  1. keep an eye on Koe Simpson from the Bills this week. he will likely be lighter in the pocketbook.

Ko was flaaged for a PF on a helmet to helmet on Randy Moss

Later he was not flagged for the same thing in the End Zone (vs Moss)

and also, not flagged for a forearm shiver to the back of Moss’s head on a pile on as Moss was already going down

Ko is a dirty player - we will see if they take notice

  1. Am I the only Patriot fan that is fed up with ellis hobbs week after week
talking to the media ? The guy has done NOTHING except get burned
like toast as a corner. He plays off his opponent by 10 yards on almost every play.
Until he actually does something more than return punts/kicks....THEN SHUT THE
    BLEEP UP!!!

  1. Who cares what the players say. Its their opinion. Its not going to change the out come of the game, so let the say what they want without fining them. Just so stupid.

  1. and yet not fine on Pollard for lunging head first into Brady's knee. Hmmmmmmmm!

    Posted by boston68 November 10, 08 05:39 PM
  1. lets Pollard put Brady out for at least a season ,and thomas gets $7500 for a stupid penalty but no way a fine

  1. Jim C : you make me laugh! All of a sudden you are an expert. What team are you the DB coach of? You have to figure that Coach BB puts his best players on the field. First of all, you have no clue as to what the scheme is and what are Hobbs' responsibilities; and second point if Ellis was hurting the team he would not be out there. Remenber last week, BB pulled Willhite out of the game when he was not covering the slot receiver as he should. Let's have a little faith that BB and Capers know what they are doing when it comes to Hobbs.

  1. First of all, the players should be able to say whatever they want to say. If the call was terrible, they should be able to say it and not get fined. What kind of 1st amendment suspension does the NFL enjoy anyway? We're allowed to say whatever we want about our government, our church leaders, the president, GOD!!! We can say whatever we want about that, but players in the NFL can't say that call stunk without getting hit for a fine?

And, he didn't even say anything that horrible!! He said the calls were "iffy," and then, if you read the whole context, it's 10 times lighter than that!! It was along the lines of "you have to live with the calls" and "they could go either way..."

    God almighty!

If politicians want to do something with the NFL, forget steroids. Start doing this:

    • Enough with the fashion police. "You're sock wasn't regulartion-$5,000!!
    • Let's resume the 1st amendment: they can say what they want. (Honestly, if anyone even knows why they're allowed to fine players for speaking, please, post it.)
    • More refs on the field. Doesn't it stand to reason that if you can call holding "on every play," YOU SHOULD!! Why not? Because they have like 6 or 7 refs watching 22 players that are all twice as fast and 3 times as big as them. So they miss stuff. Translation: YOU NEED MORE REFS!!

They make billions of dollars each year, and can't figure out that adding 3 or 4 refs won't break the bank.

  1. Attention lemmings:

Keep buying all your NFL gear, tickets, and merchandise while you complain about the way it's run.

Keep crying over millionaires getting fined by their billionaire employers.

This concludes the test of the ironic broadcast system.

  1. "Jets" Goodell is out of control. It took five ballots before he was elected Commissioner, and my bet is that it would take only one to get him removed.

He is the John McCain of the NFL, a power hungry man with no scruples.

  1. Remember, Moss plays for the PATRIOTS and even without Brady, the league and officials want to get the PATS so bad for "Running up scores" in past seasons that refs will make "Iffy" calls and fine the PATRIOTS and players whenever they can.

  1. Guess freedom of speech is not allowed in the NFL

    Posted by mtbr1975 November 10, 08 10:01 PM
  1. Next fines will be issued for "well, I didn't agree with call..."

    Posted by C Staples November 10, 08 11:40 PM
  1. No Freedom of speech is not the issue they all have joined the NFL that means the people that pay them make the rules.

Unfortunately I am a Patriot fan and think "iffy" is not worth looking at a second time but the NFL needs to get a commissioner that is from the MLB(Major League Basebal), Someone with no agenda like the current commish

  1. The only "iffy" calls (and missed calls) I had seen on Sunday were called against the Bills.

...."devils advocate"...to say Ko is a dirty player to me means that you obviously do not watch him from week to week. He, like most of the Bills players, are stand-up leaders that the rest of the league can look up to. Whens the last time you heard of any Bills players getting into any type of trouble? (No O.J jokes please!)

  1. Didn't you hear they fired Goodell & replaced him with pro wrestling owner Vince McMahon?

Posted by JT November 11, 08 02:59 PM
  1. The one question not being asked: What "iffy calls" is he talking about? The Pats lost the game. I did not see the refs robbing them blind like they did the Colts in the game versus the Packers.

The Pats cry foul everytime they lose. Suck it up and move on. You lost, fair and square.

PS. Please do not give me any baloney about how the Colts beat the Pats without Brady. Anyone who says anything will love Cassel when they win and blame him when they lose. The Pats are still doing good, showing they have a quality team and do not live or die by their quaterback, but do not say you would have won with Brady because, you might not have...

  1. Any ball game you play, whether it is football, basketball, baseball, etc. you are going to have disagreements over officiating, good calls and bad calls alike. Randy Moss is just expressing his opinions, which he is entitled to, not only as a player, but also as an individual. Each of us, have similar opinions at one time or another. What is the NFL oging to do next. IS THE NFL GOING TO START FINING THE FANS FOR BOOING THE OFFICALS.
