Video: Reiss breaks down spread formation

Posted by Chris Forsberg, Boston.com Staff November 26, 2008 07:43 PM

FOXBOROUGH -- The Globe's Mike Reiss breaks down the X's and O's of the Patriots' spread formation and shows why the team has had success with four wide receivers on the field.

Reiss points to Wes Welker's career-high 64-yard reception during last weeks' 48-28 triumph over the Miami Dolphins to illustrate the success of the formation. For more on the play, check out the Globe's Globe's Play of the Game graphic.

  1. Mike,
Love the diagrams and the football tutorials. Even though most of it I knew already, not everyone does. Plus, I find it be a nice refresher. It reminds of BB pressers where he talks football strategy or teaches other things to you guys. I'm still jealous of that time in the last couple of years where he took you guys into a meeting room and broke down film for you guys and bestowed you with some football knowledge. Pats Fans, we are all super lucky to have the best coaching staff in football (one could argue ever) and we also have the team of football writers here at the globe...Happy Thanksgiving!

  1. Now that's the kind of football talk that i like! I could care less about contract situations and the business side of the NFL.

This is the fun stuff. Really nice job of spreading the credit for success to the o-line and downfield blocking.

  1. This is great. Every week you could do one or two of these. I'd be interested in hearing how Pittsburgh might try to defend this spread offense. Nickel vs. dime? How is the cover 2 different than what the Pats usually play. What about blocking schemes? How does the offense pick up blitzers and how do receivers adjust when they read that a blitz is on? Maybe break down some red zone plays. All of these might be good topics going forward IMHO. Thanks.

  1. Nice job Mike but next time take it to the next level and describe what the other recievers are doing with crossing paterns and other tactics to get the defenders out of position.

  1. As someone else mentionned, I already knew most of the stuff you described in the video, yet I watched it with a lot of interest. Definitly always interesting to hear about X's and O's, and we don't get enough of it in the media.

You have great teaching skills, if ever you want to re-consider your career choice.

Thanks for always going the extra-step in bringing us great football reporting Mike!
