Viewing options

Posted by Mike Reiss, Globe Staff November 13, 2008 12:26 PM

A few emailers have asked about viewing options for tonight's Patriots-Jets game, which is being broadcast on NFL Network (8:15 p.m.).

This information might be helpful:

  • The game can also be seen in Boston on WCVB Channel 5.

  • In Manchester, New Hampshire, it can be seen on WMUR Channel 9.

  • In New York, the game will be on WPIX Channel 11.

  • www.NFL.com/live also provides a "companion live broadcast" to the game.

    1. Does anyone know what a "companion live broadcast" is? Will I actually be able to see all of the game, or am I better off going someplace that's showing the game on tv?

    1. There is also Sprint's NFL Mobile Live.

"For the first time in wireless, Sprint customers will be able to listen to the live radio broadcasts of every NFL game throughout the 2008 regular season and will also be able to watch all eight of the Thursday Night Football telecasts carried by NFL Network live beginning on Nov. 6 via the new NFL Mobile Live application. Sprint is making it easier to follow a specific team by carrying a live radio broadcast for each game including pregame and postgame reports in most instances."

    1. You'll be able to see the whole game. It's exactly like watching it on TV, plus they give you a few extra camera angles to play around with. The quality isn't bad either...

    1. Mike, just for informational purposes...... I called Comcast yesterday to see about ordering their Sports Tier Package which includes the NFL Network. I told them I only wanted the package for the purpose of watching the Patriots game and asked them how long I had to keep it. They told me I could cancel it any time I wanted to. The cost of the package is $5.00 per month. There's no charge to have it turned on. So if I keep it for two or three days, it will cost me about 17 cents a day. So for 51 cents I can watch the game tonight. It's a pain, but it's worthwhile.

    1. Hit up somewhere with a TV my friend. The companion broadcasts aren't very good.

    1. Fans in CT are out of luck unless they have NFL Network!

    1. A companion live broadcast is garbage. Some retired has beens sit around a table talking nonsense and every hour or so they cut in to the game. What a load of crap. Go to your local sports bar.

    1. In SW CT - below New Haven, I believe, we are in the NY media Market, so we'll get the game on channel 11 (the ONLY good thing about being a PATS fan in the NY Media market.....*believe* me!). The companion broadcast is a little annoying. You get everything inside the red zone, and the last 5 mins of each half. After that, it seems very random as to when they go back to coverage. To make things worse the in-studio presenters are terrible - not exactly making me rush out there to get the NFL network!
      Cheers,
      Davo

    1. Rcros - It depends what area of CT you're living in. I live in CT, 45 minutes outside of NYC, and I get both New England and New York local tv stations. I'll be able to watch tonight's game on Channel 11. Even for Sunday games, I am still able to watch the Pats, as I get two CBS & FOX channels (One for NY and one for NE).

    1. Yes, Gumbel is gone. In his place is the Bob Papa - better known as the voice of the New York Giants.

    1. Haahaha... Charlie, you should come down from Ottawa, get onto the field and shout those words at the Jets. Show em how tough you really are!!!!!

    1. Out here in western Ma. we don't get Channel 5 - 9 or 11

The NFL network is a joke they want to charge $4.95 for a single game.

It is a good thing that a local radio station broadcast the game So that we can turn off the 52 inch hi-def flat screens and huddle around the old RCA

    1. Matt - is ch. 5 in Boston on whatever cable system you have? It depends on what part of Maine you live in. When I lived in Portsmouth, NH a number of years ago, they used to carry the NFL Network games.

    1. if you want to watch the game for free on your PC, go to myp2p.eu, click on american football section. havent used it in a while but you may need to DL a viewing application like sopcast or tvantz. there may be a mediaplayer feed but im not sure. been going to the bars for most of the games.. enjoy.

Posted by Alex November 13, 08 04:21 PM
    1. How about they just change the name back to the Boston Patriots since the rest of New England (save for the area of NH near Boston) gets shafted as usual?

    1. How do I get the game in Florida?

    1. remember people this is a battle between the NFL and the cable companies. They are going to continue to give you marquee games on the NFLN to try to force the hand of the cable companies. I signed up with COX here in CT to get the game and I am cancelling tomorrow.

The nfl.com companion broadcasts do not show you the entire game. as someone mentioned in another post its a roundtable discussion with some live cut ins. Its not the way to view a game. Its meant as a companion to the TV coverage, hence the name.

P.S. P2P broadcasts are illegal as they violate the NFL tv contract and at some point the league will get it shut down. I'm really surprised the Globe allowed that comment to stay.

    1. If you have commented about this article, then please forward me your email address. This way I can send you a coupon for a box of tissues. What a bunch of crybabies. As previously stated it is only $4.95 for a month of the NFL network and you can cancel anytime with no activation fee. There aren't many things you can pay less than 5 bucks for and get 4 hours of enjoyment these days. Suck it up and pay the money!

    1. I live in the northeast corner of CT and have
WCVB channel 5 out of Boston on my cable lineup. I don't have the option of buying NFL Network - Charter doesn't offer it (even though we already pay for the sports package). At 5 minutes before 8 last night, a red screen came on Channel 5 that said the game wouldn't be aired due to NFL rules/regs. I live closer to Foxboro and Boston than a lot of people in the Boston market. I understand the Rhode Islanders couldn't watch the game either and some of them live about 15 minutes (if that) from Foxboro. Why was channel 5 blocked??? Did they know they were oging to be blocked? Why didn't they inform us so we could watch the game elsewhere if we chose to?
