The Patriots announced the signing of cornerback Jason Webster this morning, and placed rookie linebacker Shawn Crable on season-ending injured reserve.

Webster, who has played eight NFL seasons, was with the Patriots in training camp. He was cut before the season opener.

  1. Mike, will you talk to the fact that Hall has been released by Oakland, and they chances that the Pats could sign him?

  1. WHAT!!! WHAT!!! is that a typo...Crable hasn't done much, and is a shin injury that bad. I must mean wheatley is going to be out for a few weeks but not IR worth. And since Crable isn't playing....

  1. Wonder if the Pats could pick up DeAngelo Hall?????

  1. The PATs go Cheap again! Instead of getting Ty Law, we are getting someone less capable than Deltha O'neal. Why should anyone be half excited about this move.

  1. DANG! I was looking forward to seeing Crable. I assume Belicheck realizes Wheatley is out and he is not going to use Crable much(needs to learn system more) and decided to go with another DB. Am I correct on my assessment Mike?

Great job on reporting. I check out Reiss's pieces before, during, and after work each day.

  1. Mike, any news on Wheatley? Tough luck for Crable.

  1. What about DeAngelo Hall who was just cut by the Raiders or would he be to much of a headache and not worth the risk. They would only have to sign him for 8 games.

  1. Mike - I just saw DeAngelo Hall got cut by the raiders. Is he a free agent? Was he cut for performance or salary cap reasons? A potential get for us?

  1. Hi all. Quite a few questions on Hall. Don't think it's a consideration at all. Not their type of player/guy. One thing to keep in mind is that the Falcons new GM came from the Patriots. One of his first moves was to trade Hall. That is one indication, to me, that Hall is not a Patriot-type option.

  1. Thanks for the feedback on Hall!

Makes sense. John Lynch still an option for the Patriots?

  1. I don't think Hall has a shot unless he clears waivers. But even then, there will likely be a line of offers. His risk to sign off waivers is way too high. If he is injured, he is guaranteed $16M going forward.

My best guess is Ty Law's price is too high for the contributions he would make. Also, the move with Webster may be just temporary as Wheatley recovers. He is replacing a guy who never made the active roster, which in my opinion means that either someone else will have to be inactive (Wheatley) or he is insurance in case Wheatley can't play and he will be inactive. In this regard, why spend the money on Ty Law for the very short term.

  1. webster is atleast is a vet, is cheap to sign, and has good hands. hall is not a character player. law is too expensive. despite all the key injuries, we're in good shape. WE beat ourselves against the colts.

  1. As I hope we've all learned by now, anyone who has previously played for the Patriots--either in the regular season or training camp--is always going to be a first choice for them when scouring the waiver wire for reinforcements.

It's not necessarily a question of the cheap way or the expensive way, but in the end it all comes down to assimilating into Belichick's system, and that gets harder the further along we go through the season.

  1. Everyone shut the heck up about Hall. The guy can't cover a bed with a sheet.

  1. Relax those who call themselves true Pats fans first off it was a good move by the Patriots bringing back Jason Webster. fist off he's a good proven vet. player who just had bad luck with injuries but when on the field is a good corner. Also why waste money on players you're not sure will work out and you can get a solid player for a bargain price who can do the job, let's not forget he brings vet. leadership to the secondary and take some of the pressure off the rookies who are struggling at times with there reads in coverage. so give him a chance before you jump the gun as most of you did with Matt and the entire 08 season after Brady went down. The team consist of more than 1 player.

  1. Slyfox, Webster's situation has nothing to do with Cassel's. It is about a player who was cut because he was not good enough to make the team. Now, he is a vet. leader just because the PATs had noone else to sign? Give me a break!
It is so simple to always have the ends justify the means and not the other way around. If he is any good, don't you think someone would have signed him by now. Wishful thinking is like ignorance being a blessing in disguise.

  1. "Every scheme I've been in has kind of allowed me to do what I like to do," Hall said. "But being here, I almost have to do what I'm told. It can be little bit frustrating at times.
"I'm a two-time Pro Bowler, 20 picks in my career, it's kind of hard to be told what to do, especially when you're comfortable doing something else. "

Dante Hall quoted in the Oakland newspaper. Tell me again why you'd want to see this idiot in a Patriot's jersey.

  1. Lol, its DeAngelo Hall. Dante Hall wouldnt be a different guy. Hard to make a point with that, but good quote. illustrates why he needs to stay the heck away from the Patriots.

  1. Stop talking about hall. I live here in the Bay Area and Hall is a Cancer in the locker room and can't cover anyone.

  1. Why not sign Jason Varitek to play CB? any thoughts on that? 4 years 52million he should be able to do more than play baseball.
