Browns owner on Pioli

Posted by Mike Reiss, Globe Staff December 30, 2008 09:20 AM

Browns owner Randy Lerner, in a piece in today's Cleveland Plain Dealer, talked about why Patriots Vice President of Player Personnel Scott Pioli is an appealing candidate to him.

"He's got a lot of qualities. He's very well-trained. I think he's got a very attractive demeanor, football demeanor. It's the right time of life for him. I think he's a fundamentally good guy."

  1. If that is what Scott wants, I wish him well. It's too bad they fired RAC before they hired a GM, though. Maybe Pioli and Crennel would have worked well together.

I hope the Patriots have a position for RAC.

  1. Don't former Patriots players, coaches and exec's "Get it" already? There is a curse on those who leave....just review the track-record of EVERY player and Coach who has left the Pats since Coach B took over? None of them (NONE) have had the same level of success as a player or coach since leaving.

STICK AROUND Scott and enjoy the ride....!!

  1. Adam Z, Adam Vinatieri won a Super Bowl since he left. The Patriots wouldn't even kick a 47 yard field goal on 4th down in the Super Bowl last year. How did Tom Dimitroff do in Atlanta this year? Here's a hint. He turned around the franchise. Others have had success too. What is there to "get"? There are no curses and Matt Cassel won't be cursed either. He's a good quarterback. Scott Pioli will do fine too.

  1. Maybe it's me, but did anyone get creeped out reading Lerner's description of Scott P?

  1. Given his last 3 drafts, I wouldn't be surprised if he was being encouraged to move on. Look at 2006 for example:
    Rnd Name
    1 Laurence Maroney BUST
    2 Chad Jackson BUST
    3 Dave Thomas BUST/JAG
    4 Garrett Mills BUST/JAG
    4 Stephen Gostkowski HIT
    5 Ryan O'Callaghan JAG
    6 Jeremy Mincey WHO?
    6 Dan Stevenson WHO?
    6 Le Kevin Smith JAG
    7 Willie Andrews JAG

  1. Burkie,

I did. "An attractive demeanor...and such a physique..."

  1. Mike,

Any thoughts on who would take over if Pioli left? I heard the name Nick Kaceros (spelling?) the current Director of College Scouting for the Pats....What about if McDaniels goes?

    Thanks
    Mike

  1. Yeah, an odd set of comments, borderline creepie, ala Bobo the Clown - or Al Davis?

2nd yeah, compared to Pioli, more concerned if McDaniels goes, but that's less likely than Pioli's departure. If need be, BB could place more of his own emphasis next season on play calling duties just like McDaniel's first year as OC.

Old Dog: Pioli "encouraged to move on" because SOME of the picks in ONE year didn't pan out to their full potential? Glad you're appraising my body of work,

  1. Mike,

While we are talking about the Browns, is Belichick planning to re-hire Crennel in some capacity? It would be good if he does ...

  1. The Old Bulldog - You can't say Pioli hasn't done an amazing job. We've had an incredible free agency and the last 2 years have shown some seriously good picks. Look at Mayo, who we got at a discounted rate after the trade, and Merriweather is developing nicely. You need to look at the whole picture, and this team has been DRASTICALLY improved under Pioli. He is a huge cog in the organization and losing him would be a HIT to this organization.

  1. D-Rone, If Scott Pioli was held to the same standards of performance as the players, he'd be gone. He has only been able to draft 3 starters over the last 3 drafts and one of them is a kicker! In reality, he's only drafted 1 really good player, Mayo, in the last 3 years. That's just reality. I give him zero credit for the recent Free Agents becuase BB was responsible for every one of them. AD was courted by BB at the Pro Bowl. Welker was IDed by BB becuase he was uncoverable when we played Miami for examples. I for one won;t shed a tear if he moves on. His recent track record speaks for itself.

  1. Randy Moss was signed by Brady through text messages, not Pioli

Posted by gick December 30, 08 02:47 PM
  1. Mike, we need a breakdown of Pioli's work similar to what TheOldBullDog started posted above. Along with those busts is Mayo, and if he doesn't get defensive rookie of the year then its official, the NFL has its collective head up its arse.

  1. gick..not true...

Belichick & Pioli came to Boca Raton , met and worked Moss out. His personal trainer is there. & was @ workout

Moss ran 3 [ yes 3] 4.21 40 yard dashes....know all of above as fact

  1. How did they draft Oscar Lua and Mike Elgin in two consecutive drafts? And Brandon Meriweather was excellent this season, I don't think you can call that a bad pick yet.

  1. Pretty strange how all those players ended up in jacksonville

  1. burkinBoston, yeah I thought it sounded a little wierd. "well-trained", sounded like he was talking about a dog!!

  1. what does JAG mean?

    Posted by Justin-R December 30, 08 09:49 PM
  1. JAG - Just Another Guy - nobody special.

As shown, there are 2 starters out of the last 3 drafts (sorry, I'm not counting a kicker as a starter) and if the secondary wasn't so bad and so depleted, I doubt Meriweather would even be starting. He certainly hasn't lived up to being drafted in the first round. He's a JAG thus far. Let's hope he turns it around next year.

Posted by TheBigOldDog December 30, 08 11:12 PM
  1. Just -Another-Guy
FYI, I disagree with the implication. First and second round draft picks are expected to be solid starters. 50% of third rounders are expected to be starters or solid role players. For the rest of them, making any team's NFL roster for more than 1 season is a success.
Using these guidelines, only Chad Jackson is a BUST. Even Maroney was worth some value because he extended Dillon's career and in 2007 led the team down the stretch to a perfect regular season and Super Bowl appearance, for those with short memories.

  1. Dog, If you're going to evaluate the success of a draft you must include players acquired through the trade of draft picks. Wes Welker and Randy Moss are both star players that were acquired in this way. Also, you're not looking at his body of work. What about Asante Samuel, Tom Brady, Matt Cassell, Dan Koppen, all taken with mid to low round picks, and rookie free agents like Mike Wright, Randall Gay, & Guyton.

I also beg to differ that Maroney has been a bust. Held back by injuries but a very talented player. He'll be interesting to watch in '09. And to not "count" the leagues leading scorer and pro bowl kicker is just ridiculous. That's just you making up the evaluation rules to support your weak arse case.

  1. Scott Pioli has a done an outstanding job but I think its time for him to move on. The last couple of drafts have been weak and his free agent signings leave alot to be desired. I do think if anyone can turn around the browns and make them into a somewhat competitive team it would be him though.

The new environment would help to invigorate and motivate him. I also think that it will also light a fire under BB. He needs to get his act together and start focusing on the draft and free agency more. My belief is that early in Scott's tenure BB was more involved in the draft and free agency than has had been the last few years.

I still find it hard to believe that BB would trade up to take a receiver (Chad "I am working at Mcdonalds" Jackson). This was more than likely one of Scott's picks. At anyrate, we will be fine as long as we have BB running the show.

  1. Merrieweather is coming on very strong, not a JAG.Will be in the Probowl with in a couple of years.Wheatley and Willhite will both be good players, both are kids that played hurt and are very much still learning.

  1. Except for the HC having a final say on any additions to his roster (which only makes sense), Pioli already has it all here in New England. Kraft will match the $$$. Stay here, Scott: look at the one-time pheenom GMs who then had a couple of disappointing seasons and then must beg for positions somewhere, any where: McKay, Mullins, Spielman. Seems that yesterday's SB rings are not the same guarantee of yet another job as it is for head coaches. (Which is why everyone knows that Shanahan has his pick of jobs at 2 cities already: Detroit, St. Louis.).
