Browns receive permission to talk to Scott Pioli

Posted by Mike Reiss, Globe Staff December 29, 2008 11:12 AM

Browns owner Randy Lerner has asked for and received the Patriots' permission to interview Vice President of Player Personnel Scott Pioli. The Cleveland Plain-Dealer website has more on Lerner's comments from this morning, which were focused on Bill Cowher taking himself out of the running for the head coaching spot in Cleveland.

Pioli is expected to be a target for teams looking for a general manager/president this offseason.

[Note: report was updated to reflect that permission was granted, not just asked for]

  1. Anyone have any idea of Pioli is interested in a GM job?

  1. Here we go. People may think twice about Josh McDaniels though considering the lack of success by Ratgini, Romeo, and Weiss. Josh may think twice about leaving for the same reasons. 95% of the programs success is BB

  1. This would be a great hire for the Browns. I hope Pioli sticks around. But I'd like to see someone revive the Browns franchise.

  1. Assessing talent is a difficult task. We all would like the best for Mr. Pioli, I just hope Mr. Kraft will give him the best to keep him employed in such a great organization, which of course Mr. Pioli helped shape and build.

  1. Wont change a thing for Patriots even if we lose Pioli. BB is the man, he is the single reason why Patriots are this good.

  1. Uh Oh!! Can not the Patriots promote him or give him a hike and keep him here??

  1. Mr. Kraft,
Please do not let Mr. Pioli go. He is one of the main reasons I have been able to wear my Pats jersey into Sports Pubs all over the country with pride (Reilly's Sports Pub in Hilton Head yesterday). Don't let anyone talk to him and pay him what you need to pay him to keep him in town!! You've got the cash and it doesn't count against your salary cap. He's made you a crap load of money and made every fan proud to be a fan!

  1. give him a nice raise, tell the other teams in a word, no.

  1. as much as i'd completely hate losing scott pioli, he has earned his right to explore his career options and do what is ultimately best for him and his family...he has been 1 of the biggest contributers to the success of our team over the super bowl years, and has every right to enjoy the fruits of the success we have had here. just like romeo, charlie weis and that weasel mangina have. year after year pioli has been a good soldier and stayed loyal to us, even though he couldve easily parlayed the pats success into a much more lucrative position elsewhere long ago. if the time has come he wants to spread his wings and leave the nest, i can only say good luck mr pioli, and thank you for everything you have done for us pats fans.

that being said, here is hoping kraft trumps all offers to keep him right here with us....

  1. I don't think this is a money issue for Pioli, so offering him a raise to stay in NE probably wouldn't be the answer.

He has always wanted to be the #1 guy in charge of a team. With the Pats, he's the player/personnel director, but all final decisions on personnel are Belichick's.

So again, it won't be a money thing. It comes down to whether Pioli wants to remain as part of a personnel team, without final authority, or whether he wants to run his own show.

Posted by Tony December 29, 08 01:21 PM
  1. Of course he probably wants a new challenge ... what else does he have to prove here in New England? 3 Super Bowl rings. Undefeated regular season. When you have that behind you already, I would imagine going forward, if you believe you are worth anything, you are going to want to try on your own rather than being in someone's (Belichick) shadow.

For people who are asking if we even know he is interested in a new job - keep in mind he does appear, at this time, to be interested in interviewing for the job. In the past I believe he has always just flat out turned teams down.

  1. Pioli IS doing a GREAT job and matched-up with one of the BEST headcoaches in NFL history.... they are GREAT TOGETHER! I am sure KRAFT will compensate Pioli to stay and be part of the BEST NFL organization.

That doesn't make any sense-because Pioli isn't a coach- making him the GM/President somewhere isn't going to give him anymore authority because whatever team signs him will still have a Head Coach he has to confer with. Look at teams that let their management, instead of Coaches, make the final decision. Hello, Oakland Raiders?? BB and Scott seem to work very well together and make decisions about players together. Why would he leave what is working so well?

this is not true at all. the seahawks offered him total control and a huge contract a few years ago, which he turned down. he isn't as involved with selecting personnel as he is with the financial aspect of the draft and free agency.

  1. pioli is absolutly a vital part of the pats organizations, hes not #1 thats obviously bill but hes a not too far behind 1A

  1. Pioli woiuld become the president of the Browns. That is one reason that he probably got permission. Anything else would be a lateral move which the Krafts have blocked in the past.. In addition to the Browns there will be several other teams looking for someone like Scott Pioli. If I am not mistaken, Jonathan Kraft is the President of the Patriots, so Pioli won't get that job.

Posted by jimpatod December 29, 08 02:32 PM
  1. pioli is one of the biggest bricks in the patriots foundation. He will be back , he still has plenty of work to do here!!!!!!! linebacker-cornerback-maybe even an R.B

Posted by willy winone December 29, 08 02:33 PM
  1. He had permission to interview with the Seahawks and Giants, too. When he actually takes one of these interviews, then maybe we'll have something to wring our hands over. In the meantime, get a grip.

  1. Anyone know if he is under contract and if we would receive any compensation? Similar to when Bill came over from the Jets and we had to give them a 1st rounder?

No wonder you didn't get the bike. You spelled Kraft incorrectly and your message was probably launched off into cyberspace.

  1. While I can see why Pioli would want to run his own show and have success outside New England, sometimes the best decision is the one right in front of you. Remember Pete Carrol? Steve Spurrier? Nick Saban? All overreached when they shouldn't have. Carrol was smart and realized he's king of Southern California. Same with Coach K at Duke. Pioli should not even consider leaving until Brady and Belichick retire.

  1. Sounds like Pioli would be heads and shoulders above the whining, immature, arrogant Phil Savage we just let go... Good bye phil....

  1. I am shocked at how many people on here do not recognize Pioli's role in the success of the Patriots.

Posted by JimR December 29, 08 04:14 PM
  1. Very true Tunas Albacore... Pioli sees the writing on the wall. He wants out of the division. He knows Miami will be a power for years to come with his father in law running the show there. Plus those family gatherings have been a bit uncomfortable lately.

Posted by Bob Griese December 29, 08 04:16 PM
  1. Pioli won't leave now. The Pats still have a 2-3 year window with this crew to win a few more SB's. After that window closes, it will be tough for the Pats to remain at the level they have been at for the last 8 years or so. I think in 3 years SP & BB will move on for new challenges.

Posted by Ghost of Marv Cook December 29, 08 04:48 PM
  1. Scott Pioli is not a bit worried about his father in law,The big Tuna is going to take his money 12mil and say adios to Miami,to bad the owner of the phins sold his team and the new owners only want Tuna to stay on as a consultant!!! Via con dios muchacho, his favorite saying is show me the kwon!!! So as you see there is not going to be any family fued developing,it's all about the money. If young Mr.Pioli wants to jump ship there's nothing the Patriots can do about it,IMO he'll stay here in the land of Champions!! The only reason to go to the Brownies is Money,Ego,and assuming some additional power..Championships out weigh those things

  1. I agree do not let him go! It would be a terrible loss. Match whatever he gets and promote him. Although i believe he is #3 in charge, so i don't think it is possible.

Posted by Tyler Manoukian December 29, 08 05:02 PM
  1. With what Parcell's did in Miami and Dimitroff in Atlanta, the Kraft's are going to have to give Pioli a substantial raise to keep him. He may be ready for a new challenge now that he's seen the praise being heaped on Parcell's and Dimitroff. But, I hope he keeps working for the Pat's. It appears that he and Bill Belichick work very well together. If he's gone, yet another challenge for the Pat's and Belichick.

  1. Scott Pioli can find the most talented players in the world, but if he cannot turn them over to a coach who can recognize, utilize and maximize the players' talents, it won't make any difference. (That would be BB, by the way). And if the Pats have any sense at all, they would immediately bring back Romeo Crennel. The defense has never been the same since, and there have been no SuperBowls since he left.
He has no ego, and the players would "drop their shorts" for him, everywhere he's been. Just read listen to the difference in the exit comments from Browns players and Jets players.

Scott Pioli is the man who organizes, prioritizes, and cleans up the cluttered desk of the madman at the helm, making sure none of the details slip thru, and the i's are dotted and the t's are crossed. He's to BB what Alfred is to Batman. They need each other, and I think when Scott Pioli looks around, this will become crystal clear to him.

Posted by Jim Phillips December 29, 08 05:14 PM
  1. Does anyone remember BB's first coaching job? All this negative talk of the Brown's could be directed at our own. BB ruined that team...they were picked to go to the super bowl in 1995 by SI. (The year before they were 11-5 and went to the AFC Champ game - betting NE in a playoff game. A little note of history, that was BB only playoff victory as a head coach before going to NE.) The 1995 team had everyone coming back and looked for a promising year. They ended the year 5-11 and then moved to Balitmore. BB was fired with a combined record of 37-45 - with only one playoff season in four years as coach. Since then, no one has had a winning record in Cleveland. Let Pioli and any assistance coaches go!! What more damage could BB and his goones do to Cleveland.

  1. He and Belichick are unrepalable

Posted by NE December 29, 08 06:05 PM
  1. Has anyone stopped to consider that maybe BB, Pioli, and Kraft all have a deal in place for Pioli for when Belichick steps down? Just a thought

Posted by patswillreturntoglory December 29, 08 06:05 PM
  1. The Pats could get rid of Belichick, Pioli, and McDaniels and the Patriots will still be AFC favorites if Brady comes back healthy. The Patriots never won anything before Brady and they probably won't win anything after him. Everyone except Brady is expendable.

Posted by Frank December 29, 08 06:13 PM
  1. Pioli will take the Cleveland job if he doesn't have to live there....Pioli has got brains. He is part of an organization that is going to compete at the highest levels year in and year out. He is a family man. If he were concerned about bigger money and more notoriety he would have been gone long ago.

Posted by Phil December 29, 08 09:46 PM
  1. "unrepalable"?

the Browns have a solid LT, potential franchise QB, and a stud TE. Pioli, with the right coach, could succeed in CLE.

Posted by Bill December 29, 08 10:54 PM
  1. Let's not forget Pioli has worked in Cleveland before. He is also very good friends with Cleveland Indians GM Mark Shapiro and Cavs GM Danny Ferry. So if Pioli ever decides to step out on his own....this is probably the best situation for him. It's now or never for Pioli.

    Posted by Magnum 48 December 30, 08 12:00 AM
  1. I am from Cleveland. According to the morning papers Pioli is interested in the job. I had not realized he started in Cleveland with Belicheck until it was mentioned. They are saying that GM in Cleveland could be enough to pull him away from the Patriots. We will see. They just said now in sports that Mangini is being interviewed tonite the 30th.
