Cassel & Tatupu

Posted by Mike Reiss, Globe Staff December 4, 2008 12:07 PM

FOXBOROUGH -- Last week, Patriots quarterback Matt Cassel played against his former college roommate, Steelers safety Troy Polamalu. This week, he's preparing to face another former Southern California teammate, Seahawks linebacker Lofa Tatupu.

"He's one of my close friends, we talk all the time," Cassel said of Tatupu. "We had a great relationship in college and continue to have a great relationship. Every offseason, we usually spend some time together. He's a great player and a great friend and he's doing his thing."

Tatupu's 74 tackles are second on the team.

Cassel said that even though he played a different position than Tatupu at USC, they had similar friends and clicked off the field. But while the two talk regularly, they haven't been in contact this week.

"I'm sure I'll see him come Sunday," said Cassel, who obviously hopes that meeting isn't coming in the Patriots' backfield.

  1. Don't forget Tatupu's New England connections... He played his freshmen year of football for Maine before transferring to USC, and his dad played for the Pats. I wouldn't mind having Lofa on our team.
