Chiefs request permission on Pioli; could speed up process
Patriots Vice President of Player Personnel Scott Pioli is scheduled to interview with the Cleveland Browns today, and the process could move quickly due to the interest of a second team.
In addition to the Browns, the Kansas City Chiefs have also officially asked for permission and are free to speak with Pioli, according to an NFL source.
With the Chiefs now officially putting their hat into the ring, it could lead to a situation in which the Browns put the full-court press on Pioli assuming their meeting with him goes well, and snow in the region does not alter itineraries.
The Browns have also officially requested permission to speak with Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels for their head coaching vacancy.

just a question... if a team wants to sign pioli will they have to trade a pick for or will the pats get nothing in return?
Pats will get nothing in return if he leaves.
you only have to compensate a team if the move is for an equal position. Pioli would be upgrading his position.
They get nothing I think all of us, the 68,000 season ticket holders should send Scott a $20 xmas present for each of the next 3 years to stay here. The league could not do any thing about it and with 900 grand he makes now and the 1.4 mill he gets from us each year I hope he will stay
To be honest, we can do better than McDaniels, who is average at best. We won't miss a beat if he goes, except for his vanilla play calling. . Would it be too much to ask for him to take Pees with him?
Vanilla offense. The offense set numerous league records in 2007 and in 2008 they were the 5th best in the league playing with their backup quarterback. Seriously, what are you talking about?
How about Bob Kraft giving him some of the $40 per car for parking....If they wanted him to stay they could keep him, money talks....
Average at best? Are you kidding? This offense set so many records last year and this season, Cassel threw for over 400 yards twice. The running game was the best it has been since the 80's.
If Josh leaves, it will create a bigger hole than if Pioli leave, mark my words. Brady has a great relationship with JM and it would be difficult to replicate with another coordinator.
That said, if Josh leaves don't be surprised if BB dials up Urban Meyer to become their next OC.
Los Angeles - I'll agree with you to an extent. For the past few seasons I've had my concerns; his plays calls have either been extremely predictable and occasionally completely unconventional. However, he's clearly gotten better as time has gone on.
With that said, having seen Cassel in this offense, he's been able to single game plans, even in games such as Indi that we lost, that were a stroke of genius. However, he's also bombed big time such as '06 playoff against San Diego (where we won but abandoned the game plan) and last year Super Bowl (where I tuly believe Belichick gave him near total control of the offense).
Having led a record setting offense in '07 and then kept the offense on track to succeed despite the circumstances this season is essentially what his reputation is right now. I don't think you can ask for much more.
But let me say, I'd be suprised if he left this season. I think perhaps next year if they go all the way or two years. He would leave us very depleted on the offensive coaching staff if he left and I've heard Brady comment that they've discussed it and he's not planning on leaving for some time.
How about you give that $20/year to charity, tell Scott thanks for all he's done, and wish him the best (except against the Pats)?
The median income for a family in Boston is $44,151. Pioli is currently earning 20 times that. He doesn't need our help.
For all you folks concerned about Pioli leaving I suggest you look long and hard at his performance over the last 3 years. Outside of Mayo and Gostkowski it's been abysmal! I wouldn't be surprised if he was being encouraged to move on. The Patriots are performance driven and his performance, measured objectively, hasn't been very good the last 3 years. It's just a fact any objective Patriots fan can determine on their own in 2 minutes of analysis. In fact, he's one of the few Execs in the League who good have survived the absolute 2006 draft class disaster.
Without Pioli and with some other dummy, the Patriots could wind up taking the Vernon Gholstons instead of the Mayos.
I disagree. If Pioli leaves, it will be a bigger impact. He's one of the masterminds behind the system. McDaniels has been brilliant, but Belichick will groom another. Not sure who fills Pioli's shoes.
It would be a great loss to see Scott Pioli go, but great for him. The Patriots are successful because of the desire to be the best at their position, from owner to ball boy. The key ingredient is now and will always be Coach B. I think that Josh stays, learning the lessons that Mangina did not, and finding the right time. But this should be completed asap, as the draft is coming and we need to move on. Would love to see Scott Pioli stay, just to see how many more titles our beloved Pats can get in this run.
Hey, Los Angeles, that "average" coordinator, with "vanilla" play calling, ROLLED the LOS ANGELES Raiders just 3 weeks ago :-)
