Colvin signs with Patriots

Posted by Mike Reiss, Globe Staff December 3, 2008 08:38 AM

Linebacker Rosevelt Colvin inked a one-year contract with the Patriots this morning, according to a league source.

Colvin, who played for the Patriots from 2003-2007, has been out of football this season after being cut by the Houston Texans at the end of training camp. He addresses a need at outside linebacker, where the Patriots have been without Adalius Thomas (forearm) and also had Pierre Woods leave Sunday's loss to the Steelers in the third quarter with a mouth injury.

Mike Vrabel and Woods have been starting at outside linebacker in the 3-4 alignment in recent weeks. The top backups are rookies Gary Guyton and Vince Redd.

The Patriots had an open roster spot after placing cornerback Jason Webster on injured reserve Tuesday, and thus did not have to make a move to create room for Colvin.

The Patriots have also contacted veteran linebacker Victor Hobson in recent days, according to a league source. Hobson was with the Patriots in training camp, and like Colvin, has not played this season.

If the Patriots are further looking to bolster their linebacker ranks, Hobson could be a top option. He has experience at both inside and outside linebacker in the 3-4 alignment, but is probably more suited for the inside spot.

  1. What a waist of a roster spot and money. There is a reason 31 other teams did not sign him. Let the kids play and develop.

  1. yay!! this makes me happy. I love Rosey Colvin. I know he's injury prone but when healthy, he's very athletic and capable. I'm excited because it certainly can't hurt to have his experience on the field!

  1. kids are hurt pal....we cant play with 5 healthy linebackers

  1. Waist is actually Waste. Rosie played well for us when he was here and adding a good vetran is the way to go. The "kids" aren't going to get you to the playoffs. Rosie is ready to play, give him some snaps.

  1. Iguide, what kids are you referring to? everyones been playing. Guyton plays in the middle as bruschi is a part time player now, pierre woods WAS playing but looks like he's hurt. Vince Redd? not so sure he's ready just yet. i see nothing wrong with adding depth at the vet minimum i assume.

  1. Colvin is not an every down LB anymore, which is why he was on the shelf. Having said that, he is good depth to add, and knows the system. Yes, Guyton needs the reps, but Rosie isn't dinged up, so if he's in shape, could be a nice push.

  1. there are no more kids to develop, they need back-ups. The real waste was missingon a chance to get either Ty Law or D'Angelo Hall.

  1. alot of misjudgement on defense this year. Could it be Dean Pees?
Can't blame Dom Capers, he has nothing to work with all year! Just a desperate move by a desperate team at this point!

  1. Pierre Woods is a special teams player......He did nothing in 2 games. Colvin will finaly get a pass rush going....Verbal has played like a 50 year old man.

  1. Roselvent Colvin did great things on the team last year before he was injured. You want to know why other teams didn't want him. His price was too high, and he didn't have a sound understanding of their systems. He knows the Pats defensive scheme and he's willing to ink a 1 year deal. How can another mentor for the "kids" do any harm. He's got a great jump on the ball when he's healthy, and since he's been resting all season, there is no reason to believe he is anything but healthy. People are so quick to judge decisions made by belichik and pioli. TRUST THE SYSTEM. There is a reason we are still alive even though we have lost more key players than any other team. That reason is the system.

  1. Adds depth for the play-off push as long as they keep winning games.

He will get his reps and the young players will continue to see their reps increase.

  1. A very good move. He certainly has enough left to empty his bucket over these last four games and help out his old teammates to get into the playoffs. I think we will see a very effective and inspiring player at this point in the year. Welcome back, Rosie!!! Let's roll!!!!

  1. Veteran presence that already knows the system. Hopefully the Pats can get into the playoffs and get Thomas back. If there was no hope of his return, I would assume he would be on IR already.

  1. Rosie USED to be a force, but age and injuries have caught up wit him. Bill is a master but sometimes i feel he is to stubborn. stop bringing in old guys and let the younger guys play. We need to play more 4-3 and let our lineman loose on the qb's. We need more pressure on the opposing qb's and Rosie doesn't have the speed anymore

Posted by jason December 3, 08 09:28 AM
  1. Hey prpat - I'm sure that your comment was tongue-in-cheek, but Roman Phifer was/is just the kind of linebacker that we need. He could bump receivers off of their routes better than anyone. If the very mediocre corners that NE employs continue to play 10 yards off of the receivers, we need guys like Roman. I've always felt that we gave up on him waaaay to soon.

  1. Mike,
Hobson has played less than 10 snaps in the regular season on the inside, he has the look of an inside player but the skill set and instincts of an outside LB. If we do re-sign him, which in my estimation would be a wise choice because of his experience and his success as a blitzer he probably plays outside. He didn't have success playing inside in the preseason. Colvin is a nice addition, he should help as a situational pass rusher immediately and could be a regular rotation guy in 2-3 weeks. Hopefully AD is back soon, I've heard vs Arizona, and we make the playoffs.

Huzzah to the return of Rosie Colvin!

  1. Best news I've seen waking up for a LONG time! So what if he's past his prime? Getting one of our winners back in the locker room -- isn't that someone who can't be anything but good with Mayo and Guyton? Just the experience and the knowledge and 'having been there' when the Pats were getting it done all game on defense? A depleted linebacker corps, an otherwise empty roster spot, and a simple one-year contract . . . how can this not be a great move?

    Posted by Bluesteele07-1 December 3, 08 09:38 AM
  1. Hi Nikos. That could be correct, although I see him easily run on if playing outside linebacker. Maybe we're looking at more four-man fronts, and Hobson as a SLB option in that alignment.

  1. I was just asking my buddy during the Steelers game, "what happened to Colvin?" (since I don't follow much off-season news). Glad he's back. I remember him doing good things for us. Hopefully he can make a difference.

Posted by HibsMax December 3, 08 09:43 AM
  1. Couldn't we have used him more 3 weeks ago? Why wait until the we're out of the playoff picture?

Posted by Joe December 3, 08 09:43 AM
  1. Patchwork at best, but I agree that it's the right move at the right time. Maybe he can bring some much needed ENERGY to a group that seems to be showing their age (minus Mayo, of course). Mayo seems to have hit the rookie wall which is not surprising based on his stellar play so far.
Colvin may start depending on Wood's health. If not, he is a situational player, yet can still be effective.

Posted by Steve December 3, 08 09:44 AM
  1. I think Woods got a lot more banged up on that hit on Heath Miller on Sunday. I am guessing he may have hurt his arm in addition to catching a bloody mouth. It looked like his forearm got jammed and then kind of went limp when he went down.

I think Colvin will be able help and was somewhat shocked he was out of football altogether. I thought he was really back to full speed before he hurt his foot a couple years back. Phifer is way too old at this point to be of any help, so I hope you peeps are joking about asking him to come back too.

    Posted by Ytsejamer1 December 3, 08 09:45 AM
  1. They should have never let Colvin go to began w/ He was a huge part of last yrs season. They shouldn't have waited this long to get him back. Now maybe the team can wake up maybe they can start earning there salaries. Colvin always did last yr Maybe the rest can take after him. I would have re-signed Colving longer than 1 yr.

  1. I like the Pats bringing back Rosey Colvin if for no other reason than he has a high motor. If he's anywhere close to his old self, he'll be flying all over the field and delivering punishing hits, both of which the Pats defense seem to have slacked off since Harrison when on I-R. Let's hope that Colin's intensity is contagious.

Posted by JinknJuke December 3, 08 09:46 AM
  1. Colvin was cut by the Texans. He was a pretty big disappointment down here, as they gave him a milion dollar signing bonus, trumpeting his Super Bowl rings and the championship pedigree he'd bring to a young team....only to end up cutting him towards the end of training camp. Truth is, he didn't do much at all in the preseason games. I wouldn't expect much.

Posted by Rob December 3, 08 09:47 AM
  1. Belichik and Pioli would not have brought him back if they didn't think he was healthy. It will take him 2 or 3 games to get into game shape. This may be a trial to see if he can make another come back for next year. He’s only 31, he could have another 2 or 3 good years left and they would have gotten out of there big contract with him.

  1. Let's be honest here boys and girls this isn't Lawerence Taylor in his heyday and we shouldn't expect him to be. He didn't fit in Indy or Houston because Indy plays a Tampa 2 and he isn't quick enough for that and Houston was looking for an explosion from the edge to help free up Mario Williams and I guess he's not that either. He knows this system and will be a decent stop gap for the rest of the season because it seems to be an indication of Woods' injury being worse then expected. No way he's in game shape totally so the kids will still get their reps but they'll also get a breather and advice from a vet who knows the game.

  1. Great news!

A friend who works at CBS Scene said that there will be other news today as well:

Garin Veris and Mike Haynes are being brought in for try outs with the team today.

Charlie Weis has sent in some imaginative plays for Cassel to run.

Romeo Crennel has sent in some blitz schemes.

Belichick has notified all defensive personnel that the object is to stop the opponent from scoring when the enter the red zone. It is not disrespectful or being a poor host to deny them points. Evidently, they were unaware of this previously.

  1. Fantastic move! Not having Rosie's pressure from the edge in last years Super Bowl due to his injury really hurt the Pats. He is not an every down player but if he is healthy, can get some outside pressure on the QB that has been sorely lacking.

Very smart move not only bring in a veteran but bring in someone that can relate to the "kids" and give them tips to help their advancement while at the same time keeping us in the hunt, all be it, a long shot now. It's never good when you have to rely on another team to allow your team to get into the playoffs but it is what it is and we have to be thankful that the coaching staff is smart enough to convince Mr. Kraft to bring him aboard. Welcome aboard Rosie!

  1. Probably means one of two things:

    1. Adalius Thomas won't be back this year

    2. They just don't trust Gary Guyton, Pierre Woods, and (I hate to say it) Tedy Bruschi to play on an every-down basis.

I thought they should have re-signed Colvin when Thomas went down. But maybe they needed to be more certain of the staus of AT or get more desperate.

Posted by bidemytime December 3, 08 10:14 AM
  1. doesn't everyone realize how vanilla the defense became last year after Colvin went down with his injury. The pass rush weakened and weakend as the season progressed, including Vrabel being much less successful at rushing the passer. Sure he probably isn't as good as he was, sure the Patriots can win their remaining games and not make the playoffs. But I've been waiting for this move all season long.

  1. These guys just know what they are doing... I was sad when Colvin was cut because he was very effective in the pass rush... with AT down and out we needed that outside rush on the QB and Rosie is the best answer. Great move.

  1. I think that Colvin can help out in situations. I doubt he'll play every down but he was the hybrid LB/DE like McGinest. A big guy with some speed. he can fit in immediately knowing the system.

Hell maybe they should look into Bryan Cox or Nellie?

I was also thinking that one thing they might try is to use Watson as a Safety. He's fast enough and if he could convert to defense I think he'd be a force. He's not helping on offense much and it seems he's plenty fast. He should have a few inches on a few of the WRs.

Oh well, time to put the bottle down and get to wor

Bill is like K.C. Jones, he loves the veterans. K.C. refused to play Reggie Lewis his first season. Refused when they were dying for scoring help.

  1. Rosey brings an attitude to the Pats pass rush that we have been sorely missing this year. He had only 4 sacks last year, but he was injured and out for a good part of last season. Bottom line is, he gets in offensive lineman's faces and plays with an intensity that we need.

If you look at the tape, Pierre Woods went down after leveling a HUGE helmet-to-helmet hit on Hines Ward. Ward immediately signaled to the Patriots sideline for trainers. After being attended to, Woods went to the sideline, spitting blood, and nodding his head as if to say, "of all the injuries you could get, I got this one." 1. There's a reason for everything Bill does. Thing's couldn't be more desperate right now, so why knock it? Why is that when a baseball team brings in a veteran leader and good "clubhouse" guy who works well with the younger guys while in a limited role we say "nice move". The Celtics keep a past his prime Sam Cassell on the roster to help the young kids and motivate everyone while pondering his coaching future. These sports allow fewer roster spots and we hardly challenge those moves when they occur. Bottom line is that the Pats already had an open roster spot before Colvin's signing, therefore getting something while not giving up talent to another team can only be a positive in my book. Especially when that something has already been an integral part in the "locker room" in the past and had his moments on the field as well. He knows the system, he knows his teammates, he was comfortable here and at times we were comfortable with him. A tired defense and some young talent can only benefit from this move. Welcome back!

  1. Wasn't letting Colvin go more of a cap-related move than a comment on his play? A no brainer to bring him back into the system he knows so well. A small glimmer of hope for our flimsy defense. The secondary isn't getting any better so we have to put more pressure the QB!

  1. Andre Tippett could play wearing his yellow HOF coat rather than a jersey. Maybe Raymond Berry could come back and stand next to Belichek on the sideline passing him written notes on 3X5 cards without saying a word. Those moves will clinch the playoffs.

  1. He wasn't on the team all along? Whoops, my bad : (

Hey why not? Finish out the regular season with some old friends for the sake of the good ol'times!

No play-offs for Pats this year guys....sorry

  1. One positive that's being overlooked is that the Pats vets know what Colvin's capable of and obviously like and respect him as a teammate. At this point in the season when everyone's hurt and tired, having a familiar guy like him come back will give the team a mental boost. And if he puts in a few good plays, all the better.

  1. Glad he's back. The team needs as much help as it can find right now and Colvin certainly knows the system. Do folks expect the Pats to just roll over and die? While the situation is dire, it is not impossible to expect that they can make the playoffs. While I don't think you'll see anyone support them as SB contenders, there is still pride on the line! Do you think this team enjoys the position it is in? I doubt it.

  1. Butch, don't worry, a high school education is overrated anyway. Also, Belichick is the proper spelling. Good thing that no one will have a hard time with the spelling of your insignificant name, with the exception for yourself of course.

  1. whats there to lose. they don't get any pressure on the qb with what they have now so why not.

Posted by steve December 3, 08 01:39 PM
  1. DB- How do you know how Steve's father spelled it in Croatia or what the immigration officer at Ellis Island did with it, since he was probably a Yankee fan around the time the curse was initiated. Oh that's right, spell-CHEK is only available to Harvard grads and Globe bloggers like yourself.

  1. A lot of people seem to be forgetting that Colvin was playing _very well_ before his injury last year. Indeed, before his injury, he was clearly outplaying Thomas and Vrabel at OLB. It remains to be seen how much he can bring to the table this year, but it's not like we're talking about a player who is years beyond his peak, a la Ty Law.

I'm glad he's back with the Pats, and hope he can regain his form.

  1. Maybe some kids in the minor leagues, the NEFL and EFL could step up if things get worse?

Posted by FrankD! December 3, 08 02:48 PM
  1. Hope he can be helpful. I think he was the biggest reason the Patriots lost the Super Bowl last year. Once he went down the D lost the ability to set the edge and force the runner back inside. Not sure he is the same player but he certainly doesn't hurt the team. I'm glad his price came down.

  1. Did someone actually mention D'Angelo Hall as someone we should be upset about passing up?? He's a cancer. He thinks he's the greatest DB since Deion. He routinely gets toasted by receivers, is full of excuses, and is without a doubt one of the worst sportsmen and role models in existence. Yup, we sure should have grabbed him. Give me a break.

  1. Rosey is the man! Very Physical and Fast. I wish he never left the team. Like some other people said, He's sometime injury prone, but he knows the system. I think it Rosey should go on the left with Tedy Bruschi next to him then Jerod Mayo then Mike Vrabel.

Posted by CmDwyer December 3, 08 05:10 PM
  1. Welcome back Rosey. Think you can stay healthy for four games?

  1. "Vetran" is actually "veteran" lgordo, but I agree with the rest. He played well when he was here, it was a numbers thing caused his departure. Maybe he'll help. He can't hurt.

  1. There is no way in Hades that the pats are going to go far in the playoffs. Cassel has proved he is capable but not a SB QB. It would be better for them in the long run to let the younger players play as much as possible and get experience as possible. So we do not have a great record. I would rather see them not make the playoffs and get a better drafting position than to get there and fall flat on their faces. Every few years they need to have an off year to draft better players higher in the draft than always getting the ones late in the rounds. So let the young players play and sit the often injured RC on the bench until all other options dead.
Otherwise you stunt the development of the young players for the future. Which is where anyone who is objective understands it is prudent to look

  1. In my opinion it's better for the Patriots to NOT make the playoffs. I, and all of you know that the Patriots do not have it this year. I think it's much better that they don't go to the playoffs lose in the 1st round, and instead get a viable draft pick that will be in the top 15 - 20 spots and address a need on the defensive side of the ball. The Patriots need a pass rusher in the worst way. Get Brandon Spikes the outside LB from Florida, he's in the mold of Mayo except an outside LB

  1. too all people that are asking where lynch is, he retired from football about 5 weeks ago

Posted by Ian December 3, 08 07:33 PM
  1. I think Colvin can still contribute, in fact, quite a bit. Hobson, too. In either case, the Pats definitely need some new faces on that defense. And, they need a newq face in the defensive coordinator's spot, also. Pees is terrible.

  1. LET'S BRING JACK LAMBERT OUT OF RETIREMENT!

Posted by Jules December 3, 08 11:05 PM
  1. Extremely happy to have Colvin back on the roster. I felt at the time he was injured that it was a blow to the defense. I was saddened when they cut him, although I can see the cap problem he presented, along with his injury history...I see him really making an impact now. Count on it.

  1. some people just dont get it..always talking and critiquing..trust the people we have making decisions and the system..support all their decisions..we dont want to be like the philly fans and people like them.

  1. Did Colvin suddenly learn to play CB? If not, what's the point of this signing?

Posted by Classless December 4, 08 01:27 AM
  1. YES! HE's back. You thought it was having tom brady out thats been leading to the poor play this season, but it was actually the absense of one Roosevelt D. Colvin. The d stands for Defense.
