Fan who tackled Seau arraigned

Posted by Christopher L. Gasper, Globe Staff December 22, 2008 02:12 PM

The fan who came out of the stands and tackled Patriots linebacker Junior Seau during the fourth quarter of Sunday's 47-7 win over the Arizona Cardinals was arraigned yesterday in Wrentham District Court on charges of trespassing and assault and battery.

Todd Kobus, 31, of Attleborough was arrested by the Foxborough Police at Sunday's game after he tackled a startled Seau, who said he thought it was a teammate joking around until he was rolling around on the ground and realized it was a fan in street clothes.

"The subject jumped over the wall and proceeded to tackle Junior Seau," said Foxborough Police Deputy Chief John Chandler.

The Patriots revoked the season-ticket privileges associated with the seat that Kobus was in. He was ordered by the court to stay away from Gillette Stadium, pending his trial. Kobus, who entered a standard not-guilty plea, is due back in court for a preliminary hearing Feb. 17.

Chandler said that fans finding their way on to the field is not a common occurrence.

"Once a subject jumps over the wall we try to grab them as quickly as possible," said Chandler. "There are 68,000 fans there. We actually haven't had people jump on the field in a number of years."

  1. It was embarrassing to see snow balls being hurled, also. I hope those ex-fans got caught and lose their seats as well.

  1. Just how drunk or mentally deranged do you have to be to decide to jump on to the field and tackle Junior Seau?

Posted by Rob December 22, 08 02:36 PM
  1. Should have signed him to play corner, that's more impressive than any tackle Ellis Hobbs has made.

  1. was the guy drunk? or just stupid?

  1. I wonder if Seau think opponents are joking around when they tackle him? Sure looks like it...

Time to go back to the easy chair.

  1. Tony Kobus - your name forever will be associated with stupidity. What a moron. I hope it was worth it - you leper.

And Danny - don't drink and watch football - you missed quite a few plays Hobbs made yesterday. On second thought - go and do something stupid as you inevitably will.

  1. Is this the last game of the season at home? So even if the tickets were season tickets, it may not really matter.

  1. thas why i cant give tickets away even to charities etc--dont want tolose my seats

Posted by george December 22, 08 02:52 PM
  1. I was at the game. a couple young guys a few rows behind me thought it would be funny to throw a few snowballs at the camera guys whose backs were to us. security did not see them throw them so they could not throw them out, but they did take their ticket location down. I suspect there are security cameras that picked up the snow ballers and those season ticket holders will be getting letters, hopefully a warning, but more likely a revocation.

  1. Any truth to the rumor that this guy was a disgruntled Eric Alexander fan who was upset when the team brought Junior out of retirement?

  1. It's Attleboro, not Attleborough. Attleboro dropped the "ugh" from its name when it incorporated as a city.

  1. fracas... Yes it was the last home game. The problem for the season ticket holder is that they will not get season tickets next year or ever again. This why you don't give your tickets to anyone you can not beat for doing stupid things.

Posted by Wayne December 22, 08 03:15 PM
  1. George, hit me up if you wanna get rid of those tickets. I'm a 30 something professional, don't drink, don't get into fights, always looking for someone I can get near face value tickets from. Could be a great arrangement for any games you can't make.

Reply here if you're interested, we'll find a way to get in touch.

  1. I agree with the snowball throwing post.. Crap like that makes ALL Pats fans look
like a-holes... Grow up, or drink less!

    Posted by At-the-Game December 22, 08 03:28 PM
  1. In response to George #14 comment - EXACTLY! I have been asked to donate my seats to charity and to "Tickets for Troops" promotions, and I have to turn them down everytime! Its not that I want to turn them down...but thanks to the Patriots strict ticket policies...I can't control who ends up with my seats.

Posted by Chomp December 22, 08 03:33 PM
  1. While what Kobus did was pretty stupid, I can't help but think of how rarely you see fans on the field/court/ice compared to years back.

In 1985 after the Pats beat the Bengals to gain a playoff spot, fans were so excited that they stormed the field and tore down the goal posts. They were marching down Rte 1 with the goalposts when they touched overhead wires and a couple of guys got electrocuted.

You could definitely lose your season tickets over that one.

  1. Tough day at the razor all around for fans. Parking lots, aisles and seats were not plowed. Snowballs were being tossed down from the expensive club sections onto the 100 sections. Have never seen anything like this since the new stadium opened.

Posted by bo December 22, 08 03:44 PM
  1. Was Matt Light protecting Junior's blind side. The Patriots should sign that guy to the practice squad. .

  1. If you're going to go after someone, why would you go after one of the best linebackers of all time? Glad Seau has a good sense of humor haha

  1. Yes very tough Day at Gillette! I was too hit by snow balls! People suck and need to grow up! Guys in front of me were thrown out for throwing snow balls at camera men! Also Tony "Goose" who was doing sideline work for FOX was hit by a snow ball to the chest! He was not pleased. Overall people need to watch the game and enjoy the PATS instead of the kid games!

Posted by waiting list December 22, 08 04:45 PM
  1. Bo you obviously weren't at the Jets game last year, it was just the same. I work in the stadium and yesterdays game was definitely a pain. Whenever is standing up and some people are throwing snow its tough to see who is doing it. I know a good number of people were ejected for doing it. Either way, if we couldn't see it I'm sure there are plenty of cameras that picked it up.

According to what I just read in the Sun Chronicle article from 1/27/07, Kobus is Army National Guard, "intelligence specialist", he spent 18 months overseas, much of it in Iraq.

Hey, weren't the Pats hosting a bunch of Iraq Vets yesterday? C'mon Mike Reiss, tell the whole story!

  1. Now, what would have happend if Seau had beaten the guy to a pulp?
Thankfully, i have to assume that Junior wouldnt catch any trouble...

Ever seen the Youtube video of the guy streaking at a football game, who then gets demolished by a big linebacker lookin type. The dude gets off his naked ass, and hobbles off the field. Clutch.

Posted by notjim December 22, 08 05:45 PM
  1. Todd Kobus is lucky he did not get killed. Anyone in Army has to be disciplined not impulsive and stupid.

Posted by Reggie December 22, 08 05:45 PM
  1. Unfortunately sometimes people act foolish and make impulsive decisions. Subsequently they have to live with the consequences of that choice. I understand that the Patriots have to follow their policies, however, more importanly , I want to thank Mr. Kobus for his service to our country and for defending our right to live in a free society. Thank you for your service!
    Jeff

  1. Kobus is getting a couple of minutes of notoriety which he obviously (consciously or subconsciously) craved. I have a feeling his legal problems have just begun and he's going to out of a lot of cash for the foreseeable future.

What a complete and utter moron. I hope he has a hard time in prison - it's not a place to be when you're sober.

There's a line between being drunk at a sporting event and doing something that could permanently ruin a players health. It's too late for Kobus to clean up his act - he's now going to be an example of how not to be a loser.

Posted by Lance December 22, 08 07:00 PM
  1. CJ,: - Hobbs has to make tackles on occasion., If he doesn't then the receiver who just faked him out of his jock strap would pick up 20 or 20 more yards.

Posted by Mike Allen December 22, 08 07:04 PM
  1. I know Todd Kobus personally and can attest that he is in fact a moron. And it is accurate that he served in ARMY NATIONAL GUARD not the Marine Corps. Kobus is not tough enough for the Marines. The whole time he was in Iraq, he posted a whiny, woe is me blog called "Lost in Iraq.com", which basically jeoparidized his unit's position

  1. Man! Googling this guy's blog, "Lost In Iraq", yields a lengthy video piece about Kobus (apparently known as "Ninja") and his Ahhhmy Nationahl Gahhd buddies playing grab-ass and shooting each other with airhorns (!) and squirtguns.

Very surreal and it strikes me as not very smart to do in a combat zone, Do they not actually issue these people real guns? I hope not!

  1. Big deal, he tackled Seau. There are much worse crimes in this world than drunkenly wrestling with a washed up LB. Posters, save your vitriol for much more urgent issues.

Posted by Classless December 22, 08 11:57 PM
  1. Lost in Iraq was meant for the family's of those in the unit to know what was going on and showing the unit having a little fun in their off time. Everyone who has served can attest to the fact that people do that stuff all the time. To crap on the website is crapping on the families who went to that site everyday making sure their loved ones were safe and alive.

Knowing him personally, Todd is not an idiot. Bad judgement? Clearly. But he is a great guy. I highly doubt that everyone who has posted negative comments about him is perfect. Todd is professional in his place of work and has a great heart. Seau wasn't mad, so why are you?

  1. Kobus is a disgrace to the ANG and a disgrace to the nation. Indeed, I hope the ANG discharges him for this foolish, idiotic incident. Just become someone serves does not automatically (#48) qualify them for thanks of their countrymen. They have to serve honorably. There are a few (very, very small minority) of troops that go to Iraq and are nothing but a problem for their units. Sounds like this guy was one of those very few. (#51). Anyone know the ANG unit he is in? I would like to make sure his commander and his JAG are fully informed of this incident.

Posted by coltlongtimer December 23, 08 04:46 PM
  1. It doesn't surprise me. They let these bozos whip hardpacked snowballs at people (including kids) throughout the game with one small plea over the PA to please stop due to a liability issue. If they really wanted it to stop they would say "if you get caught throwing snowballs you get thrown out and lose your season tickets". It is a crime to throw snowballs (or anything) at another person. You would be arrested on the street if you got caught, but not at Gillette Stadium. This guy just went one step further, figuring anything goes at this bush league stadium. Don't blame him, blame the security personnel who allowed it to get to this point.

Posted by Chaserwoo December 23, 08 10:58 PM
  1. know what? He is a good guy, a great Soldier, and contrary to what you may think, quite smart. I was his commander and can tell you these things... if he needed to blow off steam and forfeit his tickets, oh well... he obviously provided some entertainment based on the number of blog entries here. He did smudge the National Guard image for a brief moment, but, I will tell you, the unit he belongs to orchestrated most of the ice storm clean up earlier this month... the same guy you are berating may have assisted in helping you in your hour of need.
