Jason Webster to IR

Posted by Mike Reiss, Globe Staff December 2, 2008 05:39 PM

The Patriots have announced that CB Jason Webster has been placed on season-ending injured reserve with an ankle injury. Webster hurt his ankle in the first quarter of Sunday's loss to the Steelers.

Webster, 31, was the team's sixth defensive back on Sunday, playing in the dime package. That role ended up going to rookie Jonathan Wilhite after Webster was injured.

The move opens a spot on the 53-man roster.

  1. Room for Rosey?

  1. That spot is for Rosey. I'd rather see the rookies like Wilhite play than some of the veterens. Too bad Wheatley & Crable ended up on IR.

  1. Well, another hit to the already poor and thin secondary.

At least it makes room for the much needed Colvin.

  1. Ditto on Wheatley & Crable. I think it's a sign this season is following the path of the 2002 9-7 season. :(

  1. We currently only have 4 CB's and one of them is Mike Richardson.
I already hate O'Neal. And Wilhite is obviously not that great either as he has yet to be developed. Richardson is the worst out of all of them.
Its scary to see that Hobbs is our #1 CB.

  1. To paraphrase Rick Pitino...Ty Law isn't walking through that door. Ditto for Lawyer Milloy, or Raymond Clayborn for that matter. Help isn't out there for this outmanned, overmatched defense. We hold on until the draft and anything beyond 8-8, or 9-7 given the loss of Brady, et. al. is gravy. Playoffs? Please...

  1. Is there a max amount of players you can put on IR?

They're gonna run out of sick beds soon

  1. I think the best thing for the Pat’s is to start signing more rookie free agents and see if they can find some more talent out there. Let this season go (save an embarrassing playoff loss) and get ready for next year. To think this team is going to beat any playoff caliber team is just plain stupid. Colvin would make a good player-coach for this group of young LB.

  1. The biggest shame is that Wheatly got hurt this year.

History has shown that it takes DBs a few years to grow into this defense (Samuel, Sanders, Merriweather, Hobbs, well kind of Hobbs). Wheatly lost critical development time.

Even if they draft a CB this year, he will not make an immediate impact.

  1. Hobbs has grown in the defense??? Merriweather is still average at best and another first round disappointment ie Watson and Lawrence.

  1. Webster on IR isn't any big loss...he was just another liability. More sh*t that was thrown at the wall hoping it would stick. It didn't.

I like Merriweather just fine...he's a hard hitter, tackles relatively well (still needs to work on it a bit), and is finally catching balls rather than have them clanking off his hands. He's done a decent job.

Hobbs on the other hand has gotten worse and worse each year... O'Neal is what he is, another guy they'd hope would be able to do something, but didn't. I'd rather have Troy Brown back there. Even Duane Starks is looking more and more like an option! :)
