Jauron Q&A

Posted by Chris Forsberg, Boston.com Staff December 28, 2008 07:05 PM

A transcript of Bills coach Dick Jauron's postgame comments, as transcribed by the Patriots' media relations department:

Obviously, a really interesting day, weather-wise. (It was) severe to play in, both teams made plays, we just could never get it into the end zone at all. I thought Freddie (Jackson) did a terrific job running the ball and Trent (Edwards) handled things pretty well. Threw in very, very difficult circumstances, certainly to throw in or to kick in. Even the snap, difficult for the snap, difficult to catch the ball. Of course for the punter, it does a lot of stuff in the air when you drop it. It’s disappointing, very disappointing. It was a disappointing end to what turns out to be a disappointing year for us, not getting a spot in the playoffs.

On if the last play call of the first half was late:
DJ:
It wasn’t late, we work on that every single week, we work on it and give ourselves 14 seconds on Friday. You run the ball, if you get the first down, then you kill it, if you don’t get the first down, you run your field goal team on and kick it. We had plenty of time, we had 22 seconds, we just let the clock run out on us. They never set the ball ready for a play, so it’s not a question I can answer.

On what he was discussing with the referees:
DJ:
Why they let the clock expire on us and never gave us the ball to kick it.

On why he would run the ball in that situation:
DJ:
Well, you don’t know what’s going to happen on the run, either. You run the ball, you get the first down, you kill the clock, you kick a field goal. You throw the ball, who knows, you could score, clearly, you could score on a run too. That wind, I don’t know. It’s a play we work on a lot.

On the time lost on that play before the snap:
DJ:
We had time. We had times where we’ve executed it, we execute it all of the time, we execute it every week.

On if he created a crisis for himself:
DJ:
I think the whole game is kind of a crisis, there’s a lot of pressure on every play in the football game and that’s something you work on and you know you can execute under a certain amount of time, you feel pretty good about it.

On if the delay was caused by Jackson running off of the field with the ball:
DJ:
No, I don’t think so.

On if it was impossible to throw the ball into the wind:
DJ:
I don’t think it was impossible at any time, but it wasn’t very good either way, with it or against it. There were no gimmes either way. The ball was moving all over, very hard to catch it, very hard to control it and gauge the wind, because the wind was gusting, it wasn’t constant, so you never knew what you were going to get.

On what the referees’ explanation for the final play of the half was:
DJ:
You’ll have to ask them.

On what the referees told him:
DJ:
A lot.

On why he can’t relay what the referees told him:
DJ:
I could paraphrase, I wouldn’t want to do that, because I’m not sure it would accurately represent what they told me. I could tell you that they told me a lot of things. You’re free to go ask them, also.

On if he had the choice of sides in the second half:
DJ:
Yes, we had the option.

On why he chose to play with the wind:
DJ:
We wanted to kick them deep and stop them and get field position, and get as much as we could, obviously.

On if he is concerned about his job:
DJ:
I’ve been concerned about my future all of my life. It’s not any different than any other time.

  1. OK nice of you to answer questions Jauron. But now that the Jets Dolphins game is over, I have this to say:
Brett Favre sucks. Everyone who voted him to the pro bowl sucks. John Madden sucks for constantly kissing Favre's ass. Eric Mangini sucks for giving the old bat a job. And there are 52 players right now in the Jets locker room who want to kick some old QB's ass straight back to Mississippi.

  1. If Wes Welker can get fined for making Snow Angels, why can't Brett "God" Favre get fined for throwing the most blatant interception in the history of football, even if he is tha all time leader in interceptions thrown?????

  1. Don't forget the 53 in New England's locker room.

  1. Ehhh...we can't whine... The Pats had their chances and couldn't beat the good teams even when they had the chance. In addition to that, the defense wasn't going to do squat in the playoffs...so it's good really. The guys can rest up, get healthy, and the powers that be can revamp the defense.

Don't forget - with all the playoff games most of the team had been in, they'd put in over a full season more worth of football than most of the other teams. That has to take a toll and I think this year with the injuries, we saw what happened.

The Pats organization should be proud and so should the fans!

  1. It was a good season. It would have taken a miracle for a Jets team in free fall to beat a good Dolphins team. We had our chances in Indy and New York, but given how things went (Tom, Rodney, AD, ...) I think this was a storybook season. Thanks Matt Cassell (I know you're not reading this) and Coach Bill (ditto).

  1. The Jet organization, Bret and Eric should be investigated by the league for throwing a game away and not allow NE Pats to the playoffs.
