Jerod Mayo: AP Defensive Rookie of the Year

Posted by Mike Reiss, Globe Staff December 31, 2008 07:55 AM

Patriots linebacker Jerod Mayo was named the Associated Press Defensive Rookie of the Year today, earning 49 of a possible 50 votes.

The AP writes on Mayo's contributions to the Patriots, noting that his 137 tackles led the team. Mayo was the Patriots' first-round draft choice, selected 10th overall.

Bengals linebacker Keith Rivers received the lone vote that didn't go to Mayo.

The AP also quotes coach Bill Belichick, who said of Mayo:

"Jerod's done a lot for us. We've asked a lot of him and from Day 1 he's really been a well-prepared, very mature player who can do a lot of things: play the running game, play in the passing game, blitz, helps us in the kicking game."

  1. YES!!!!!!!!!! GOOD JOB, JEROD!!!!!!!!! In no time, you'll be defensive player of the year.
Btw, Brandon Meriweather should be the most improved player of the year.

  1. Congrats, Jerod! What a steal! Glad we didn't take Gholston.

  1. Hows Gholston working out NY?

You may have kept us out of the playoffs but we didn't bungle draft picks on a workout warrior or geriatric QB.

I hope the Pats go either DB or OL this year

We have the best coach in sports, viva la Patriots!

  1. Congratulations, Jerod! You were one of my favorite players to watch on defense this year. I already can't wait until September.

Now go buy yourself another truck! You deserve it.

  1. I would love to see the Pats draft one more inside LB....talk about building a strong base for the future of the defense. In the Patriots scheme, the ILB is often the most important player on the field....they start a rookie there, and he wins rookie of the year....that is impressive.

  1. Jerod Mayo is a beast. Glad to see him win the award and look forward to see his career unfold while I'm wearing his No. 51 jersey!

  1. Who was the dolt who voted for Rivers? The same Rivers who played all of 7 games because Hines Ward sent him to the infirmary. It reminds me of the dolt who cast the one lone MVP vote for Favre last season.

Anyway, congrats to Mayo and to the Pats for being shrewd in drafting him. They lured the Jets into thinking they were taking Gholston so the Jets drafted Gholston, but the Pats traded down 3 spots and still got Mayo. Good stuff.

  1. Great comment Dan. He deserves another truck (his 4th?). A complete ball player who didn't seem to hit the rookie wall. I think this past draft might be one for the ages if Wheatley comes on like he should. The UFA's they got were good contributors too.

  1. Great point by jalbs: I think it's sad when a media member gets the honor of voting for a post-season award and he makes a mockery out of the process by voting Rivers over Mayo as Rookie of the Year. I believe this media member needs to be held accountable and explain his reasoning for voting for Rivers.

Mike - is there any information on who posted the vote for Rivers?

  1. For ANY rookie linebacker to get the playing time that Jerod Mayo received this year, much less the ROY is VERY impressive in a Bill Belichick defense...

MIKE, correct me if I am wrong but this is the first time EVER (Shawn Crable included) that a linebacker was drafted earlier than the 5th round since B.B. and Scott Pioli took over the team in 2000.

Congrats to the scouting department for doing their homwork and then some. Mayo is going to be a BEAST for years to come.

Folks, remember that this is his FIRST YEAR in the complext scheme of the Pats D and he will only get better.

  1. I want to congratulate Jerod Mayo on a fine season. Barring anything unexpected, ie serious injury, you will one day be the standard for LB in the NFL. I'm sure the coach has told you that there are things to improve upon, yet you're still that good already. Well done.

For those of you that keep comparing him to the guy the Jets drafted, STOP!!!!!!!!. The Patriots were never drafting him. If I knew he was a dog all the way here in Montreal, believe me, the Patriot's front office knew it as well. I believe they would have taken Derrick Harvey over him.

  1. Lift the ban on cloning, the Pats need to clone Jerod Mayo!
I agree the media member who voted for Rivers must be outed, get to work blogosphere.

  1. The Case of Mayo v. Gholston:

Jerod Mayo is the rookie defensive player of the year. The Pats picked him 10th and signed for 5 years $18M. He led the team with 137 tackles, plus some passes deflected and maybe a forced fumble. That works out to the Pats paying him approximately $26,000 per tackle.

The Jets signed Vernon Gholston 6th and signed for 5 years $50M. He got 13 tackles and no sacks, no passes deflected, nothing. That works out the Jets paying him $769,000 per tackle he made.

VERDICT: Jets found guilty reckless waste of salary caps and sentence to watch Chad Pennington beat them over and over again now that they have no room left to bring in a quality QB nor a decent draft pick that would give them the chance to do that.
