Junior Seau's impact

Posted by Mike Reiss, Globe Staff December 23, 2008 02:45 PM

FOXBOROUGH -- When the Patriots signed Junior Seau to a one-year contract on Dec. 3, one of the questions was how much he might play.

After three games, the answer is clear: A lot.

The 39-year-old Seau started Sunday's win over the Cardinals, filling in for injured rookie Gary Guyton (ankle). The week before, against the Raiders, he was initially part of sub packages before taking over for the injured Guyton as a full-time player. And in his first game with the team, at Seattle, Seau ended up getting more playing time than expected when Tedy Bruschi hurt his knee.

In all, Seau has played in 118 of 174 possible snaps (includes penalties) since joining the team.

The heavier than expected workload was a topic of discussion today at Gillette Stadium.

"I’m now getting through training camp, put it that way," Seau said. "It’s been comfortable, but at the same time, getting my legs under me and getting the flow and the calls and the terminology. It’s coming back, it really is."

Seau's return, as well as the return of Rosevelt Colvin (104 of 174 snaps), has added some energy to the linebacker group.

“There were no training wheels, they just threw them right back in there in Seattle, and they’ve been out there making plays," linebacker Mike Vrabel said. "It’s fun. It’s been energetic. It’s been good to have them back.”

  1. Mike - do you think Bill Belichick looked at the schedule and always planned that in the event we were in a bad way with injuries, the best time to bring Seau back would be for the two road games on the West Coast, then the final two games of the regular season, and have him fresh and hitting his peak during the playoffs? It strikes me as a very canny piece of work, especially given the timing of him joining the team. He had 2 warm weather games to get back into the swing of things before facing the New England winter.

  1. Both of these guys never should have been allowed to leave to begin with. This has been, IMO, a season filled with a lot of bad personnel decisions by Belichick. Who knows where this team might be right now if not for some of those decisions.

But, everyone is entitled to an off season. BB had his this year, IMO.

  1. Mike Allen,
I don't mean to call you out but bad personnel decisions?? With all the injuries that this team has had to deal with and being 10-5 at this point I would say some excellent personnel decisions took place. Also, no team or coach or Player Personnel guy or GM hits on all his decisions. Mayo, Wilhite, Guyton, BJGE and Redd all were rookie contributors. Wheatley and Crable are future contributors. On the FA front re-signing Moss was a priority, Lewis Sanders, Jordan and LeVoir (waivers) have been nice under the radar pick ups that are starting to pay dividends.

You can't splurge every offseason because you have to keep your own guys as well. For ex, Wilfork, Seymour, Hobbs, Faulk, Neal and Watson all coming up for FA in 2010 and you would like to keep as many of those guys as possible rather than going out there and overpaying for other team's veterans that might not fit your system.

On Seau and Colvin you have to consider that Seau could not last an entire season and Colvin had to be released because he counted for over $8 mil on the cap. I think they played those moves perfectly. The Pats also were trying to get faster and younger at LB and figured that those young players (Mayo, Guyton, Woods and Crable) would be playing a lot better at the end of the season with experience than they were initially. On Mayo and Guyton they were right. But when you lose Thomas, Bruschi, Woods, Alexander, Crable and Williams it sets you back depth wise and makes players have to play different roles than you initially envisioned for those players.

In any case I wouldn't make it a habit of second guessing BB and Pioli which you seem to do quite often because more often than not they are correct. It's about building a team and they do it really well.

Ps - The Jets made a big slpash and spent tons of money in FA and there looking up at the Pats at this point and at best can finish with the same record. Offseasons should be judged as a whole not just FA signings.

  1. Seriously, enough with this guy. He's beaten like a redheaded stepchild around the edge every single play. He's a good backup, that's it.

  1. Mike Allen's posts are either A) critical of a decision made that looks bad when hindsight is 20-20 or B) lamenting on and on about Ellis Hobbs. Seriously, Mike, you have yet to have a contributive post and I'm glad I'm not the only one noticing it.

Also, thanks Nikos for making that post conveying all my thoughts.
