Every Tuesday on Boston.com, questions from Patriots fans are answered as part of a weekly mailbag. This week's mailbag has been posted and includes some of the following topics:

  • Why is the defense struggling as much as it has this season?

  • Considering if the Patriots should alter their defensive scheme to take more risks with pressure and jamming receivers.

  • Reflecting on the Patriots' decision-making process with Asante Samuel and if, in retrospect, it was a mistake.

  • A closer look at the team's problems in coverage, at the cornerback spot.

  • Quarterback Matt Cassel coming back to earth after back-to-back 400-yard passing performances.

  • Asking if Charlie Weis and Romeo Crennel could wind up back in Foxborough if they aren't retained in their present jobs.

  • A look at the Patriots' trip to London in 2009.

    1. Mike, locking up Samuel at the end of '06 should have been a no-brainer. Some people forget that he had a very good '05 as well (although not nearly as impressive statistically). In my opinion he started to emerge towards the end of the '04 season. So it's not like the front office could have been concerned that '06 was a fluke; he clearly showed a well-defined progression from year to year. They made the same mistake with Givens and Graham (who they reportedly only offered a one-year deal to, the year before he became a UFA). And they'll probably make the same mistake with Mike Wright. I'd like to see a much more proactive approach by the Pats front office.
