McDaniels on Browns' radar

Posted by Mike Reiss, Globe Staff December 29, 2008 04:42 PM

Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels is on the list of candidates that owner Randy Lerner is considering for the Cleveland Browns' head coaching vacancy, the Associated Press reports today.

McDaniels has roots in Ohio, as he was born in Barberton, Ohio and attended Canton McKinley High School in Canton, Ohio.

  1. Where ever McDaniels ends up, I'd expect Cassel to be his starting QB. Maybe it'll be back to the bench for Brady.

  1. Patriots assistants have worked out so well for them in the past. This looks like a sound idea.

  1. If we lose McDaniels, does anyone have any idea who takes over as OC? I look at the other offensive assistant coaches (Scarnecchia, Fears, Mangurian, O'Brien) and am not sure any of those guys are Coordinator material, but maybe I'm wrong there. Any thoughts?

  1. Does this mean that Romeo Crennel is going back to the Pats?

  1. McDaniels is far from ready to be a HC in the NFL. I seriously doubt that they are very serious, especially considering their last experience with a Pats coordinator.

Like Weis, I don't see McDaniels as ever being an NFL head coach.

  1. Dude, Tom Brady looks like hes going to be out all of 2009 too... No way Cassel is going anywhere.

  1. I can't see McDaniels being a great head coach. Most of the offensive success has been due to Charlie Weiss, Brady, Moss and Welker. Without McDaniels the same numbers would be put up.

  1. Why in the world would the Browns want to pick up more TRASH from the Patriots...and as for Tom Brady…he needs to get his head out of his Victoria's Secret model has-been's a$$ and back into the game of football!!!!

  1. Well said Steve. Hey Sara: why don't you go have a freaking sandwich!
And W: Why is Josh McDaniels "trash"? I'm curious of your opinion based the Pats' offensive production since he took over calling plays on offense.

Engage brain before clicking submit. Hitting "Preview" first may also help from making stupid posts. Just saying!

  1. To Burkie: First, any coach could have had a field day with the talent on the team in 2007. McDaniels had little to do with it.

Secondly, McDaniels record in the red zone is brutal. He has cost the team more points when having 1st down in the red zone than any offensive coach I can remember. Because of his red zone failures, far too many games have been much closer than they should have been.

He has yet to show he is capable of adjusting, and changing, when facing experienced defensive coordinators who do know when, and how to make 2nd half adjustment. He is totally lost when confronted with immediate change. He may be a nice kid, and he has elevated himself to a high position at a very young age, but I don't believe he has the knowledge, and the ability, to be a head coach.... not even close. Maybe, in time, he will, but I doubt it.

  1. yeah, I just thought the word "trash" was a little overboard. I like him and think he's done a very good job. I bet Red Zone Offense will get better when Brady returns.
I just scanned through the offensive staffs of teams that have/might fire(d) their head coach in case we lose McDaniel and BB goes outside for an OC. Two names that caught my eye were Chan Gailey (Chefs) & Al Saunders (Rams): any thoughts?*
