Meriweather steps in

Posted by Mike Reiss, Globe Staff December 15, 2008 01:00 PM

Safety Brandon Meriweather held a conference call with reporters today (12:30 p.m.) and his emergence as a full-time starter was a topic of discussion.

Since Rodney Harrison sustained a season-ending injury Oct. 20, Meriweather has stepped in and played every snap. He had previously been the team’s No. 3 safety, behind Harrison and James Sanders.

“My comfort level is pretty high right now,” said Meriweather, noting that he’s also in a better place to make defensive calls in the secondary. “I’m having fun playing the game.”

Meriweather also was asked to reflect on an aspect of his game that has improved since his rookie season, and he said it was his ball skills. The Patriots' 2007 first-round draft choice had a handful of interceptions that he couldn't corral last season, but he's been better in that area this year (team-high 4 interceptions).

Coming off Sunday's 49-26 win over the Raiders, the Patriots arrived back in town around 4 a.m. this morning, according to Meriweather. But while players might be dragging today, Meriweather believes staying on the West Coast all week was a benefit.

“I think it kept a lot more in us,” he said. “I think we understood as a team that flying back and forth and back and forth probably would have taken more out of us.”

  1. I love this guy, he may be out of position a couple of times or miss a tackle or two (both coachable) but he is a fearless and super aggressive hitter, which can’t be coached! Long-term I think this proves to be a good draft pick.

  1. Meriweather has been one of the few bright spots on defense. He's a solid tackler, and doesn't quite have the skill set of a Harrison or Dawkins yet, but I am excited to see what he will do in the next few years.

  1. Patriots should be drafting on defense in the 1st/2nd round every year and making trades for the offense side ( ie, receivers / running backs especially ).

The patriots draft record certainly reflects that with the exception of Mankins. Watson has been a dissapointment so far.

  1. A new contract at the end of the year would be smart business. Show him the money.

  1. He adds two things that the Pats do not have an abundance of:
    1.) Speed
    2.)Aggression

  1. Meiweather is not a solid tackler, but his game is pretty solid in all other areas and seems to be continually improving. He is usually in position to make a tackle but often gets beat. If he can concentrate on improving those skills he could be a very good safety for us.

  1. Merriweather will be the "new" Rodney Harrison. Ferocious tackler and holds nopthing back when he makes contact. I would love to see more safety blitzes by him. He could turn out to be an opposing quarterback's nightmare.

  1. Not sure if anyone will ever be Rodney. But I do see them using him more in a Rodney type role the last two games. ie; safety blitz @ seahawks/ Down in the box and covering the slot in 3/4 sets @ oakland. Can't wait to see him Grow. How ever I also seen no drop off with Lewis Sanders replacing James Sanders.

  1. I agree that Merriweather is a good contributor, but I am not ready to make any comparisons to Rodney Harrison. I'm sure he'll continue to develop. I remember last year he said he wanted to improve his catching and he has certainly done that this year. Most of the balls that were catchable that came his way have been INTs.

Next year I hope he focuses on aggressive tackles, the kind that stop RBs and WRs instead of allowing a couple extra yards. That has killed the pats this year. The nice thing about Merriweather, I guess is that he is good now and will likely continue to improve.

  1. I like Meriweather too, but I can't believe anybody thinks he is a solid tackler! His favorite tackle was on display all afternoon Sunday: go low and hit the ball carrier in the thighs with a shoulder. Often leaves his feet. My high-school coach taught better technique! When is Meriweather going to learn to break down, wrap arms, and drive *through* the ball carrier??

  1. He's not a good tackler...yet. I'm sure this will improve, but what makes me worry about him is the obvious fact that he's more a cornerback than safety.

  1. Solid Tackler! What plays are you basing that on? I've seen him carried too many times to count. I think he "delivers a solid blow" a lot...but he doesn't always wrap up. He does seem to have the knack of being in good position most of the time and hopefully his tackling will improve. Seems to be continually improving....
