Patriots hosting Colvin

Posted by Mike Reiss, Globe Staff December 2, 2008 04:25 PM

The Patriots are hosting free-agent outside linebacker Rosevelt Colvin on a visit Tuesday at Gillette Stadium, according to a league source.

Colvin, who played for the team from 2003-2007, has not played a game this season after being released by the Houston Texans at the end of training camp.

The Patriots are a bit thin at outside linebacker, as Adalius Thomas remains sidelined with a forearm injury, and Pierre Woods was knocked out of Sunday's loss to the Steelers with a mouth injury. Colvin could potentially bolster the team's depth.

  1. Great news, I hope they sign him. I think he understands the system perfectly, and good to get him. Also considering the point in the season they are in, they could likely get him on their own terms too. With Thomas out, he would fill in nicely, if he's in game shape.

  1. Intruiging news!

Wow, a Colvin in good shape would help right now, specifically getting pressure on the QB

  1. would be a morale boost of sorts i bet also

but have to wonder how they make room, and whether that means Thomas is done for the year

or, they cut Slater (sorry to say)

  1. why didn't anyone else pick him up if he was still in football shape

  1. Would they have to make room on their roster?

  1. 2 weeks too late..

  1. Recall old friend Rosey was the poster boy for SI's August NFL preview of the new look Texans. One week later he was cut. Never played a 2008 down, and as justin asks, why zero interest from 31 other teams until now?

Obviously damaged goods, but I guess Pats want to make their own assessment.
And yes, not the best indication for potential AD return, but too early to draw a more definitive correlation. (in his RC's words: "calm down")

But I wonder more about severity of Pierre Woods injury. Any word out there beyond BB's stock "wait for the practice reports"?

  1. Rosey will bring additional veteren leadership to this young corps of LBs.

    GoBam,
I think you are being a little rough on the rookie. He has been a nice potential special teams player for us. Remember back in 2002 when Kevin Faulk had that disatarous game against Green Bay and was a huge part of that loss. I said back then they should cut him. Shows what I knew. Its not like he has made alot of mistakes. Time will tell.

  1. They would probably cut Brady to make room. Cassel is the future and Bill knows it. Watch for a December surprise this week!

  1. Woods lost some teeth on that hit that knocked him out of the game. Hopefully Colvin can bring back some sort of pass rush.

  1. damaged goods at best

  1. Moron, they don't have to "cut Brady" to make room. He is inactive already. Your lack of football knowledge is only exceeded by your lack of rooster rules knowledge.

  1. BRT

"rooster rules" lol! Like the Red Rooster? Terry Taylor

Keep hope alive, Patriot fans are spoiled, forgot what it was like to
be on the bubble. The Jets and Dolphins are prime to falter, we can still win out and clinch the division!

  1. wonder if any good CBs will be available in the next draft. If so we should grab a couple.

  1. Pats still have a good shot if they win out. Ravens have a tough schedule. If the Jets lose to Miami or Buffalo, Pats have the tie breaker advantage against common opponents. Jets lost to Denver and Oakland. Good points about Colvin being in shape and being damaged goods. However, he did play in the Pats system for three years which gives him a huge advantage. Dude....... trade Brady? Someone get a urine test ready!

  1. cutting brady may just b the dumbest idea i've ever heard on my 15 years of living on earth!!!

  1. With Pierre Woods broken jaw and heading to IR there is an open spot for Colvin "calm-down" to slip right in. Unfortunately there is no DB sitting on the couch waiting for a call to suit up. I really hope this secondary can improve without old-man Harrison...chances are he is done and with him goes B-check's defensive "QB". I bet BB was in awe watching Troy P. fly around making plays against his team Sun night...why can't we get players like that!!!

  1. troy brown should qb and play corner

  1. Colvin cant run anymore. just because they hosted him doesnt mean theyre going to sign him. and it doesnt mean anything about AD. if he wasnt coming back, he'd be on IR. If/when they make the playoffs, expect AD to return.

  1. I'd like to see Rosie back. I hate to say it but Bruschi should have hung it up after last year. I just don't think it much matters what the Pats do as far as personnel goes this year wil impact their getting to the playoffs. Even if they win out it's not up to them. But if the make it to the PS, RC could sure help.

  1. BRT. Welcome to the internet. You are now 0-1.

    Posted by Justin-R December 2, 08 09:53 PM
  1. Rosey might bring OLB pressure toward the QB and let Vrable roam out on pass coverage on a 3rd down, but that would be it for 1 play. Maybe 2

  1. Gotta get deltha out of there he is completely out classed,

  1. I agree Rosie could be not be the player he once was but given that he is what this team needs..A bigtime playmaker that can fire up our struggling defense. His experience with the system can be huge to some extent and if he was in shape he would be signed..The only down side i think is the limited play he could give our young players at OLB i.e Vince Redd and Gary Guyton..But i am really on the positive on this move, i hope they sign him..i remember last year he was playing great before he was injured, he is not that old and some might say a short term solution..i really think he can help..Sign Rosie..

  1. So far this year BB has consistently not brought in "old" veterans, but has instead played younger players. I believe it is with the understanding that they do need to look to the future and you can not do that without the young players getting experience. Rosie is not going to help us this year and would be a hindrance to the future development of the younger players. In addition to that like many players who come in partway through a season he would most likely stand a high chance of getting hurt himself and ending up on IR. Wasting roster money. Go with what they have and let the chips fall as they may.
