Pees talks on game-day change
Patriots defensive coordinator Dean Pees held his bi-weekly conference call with media members today and one topic of discussion was how he’s called the defense from the press box -- and not the sideline -- in the last two games.
Pees explained that he gets a better view of the personnel opponents are putting into the game, and it’s helped the Patriots process information quicker on their own substitutions.
“It seemed to work out pretty well in Miami, so we tried it again this last week, and it’s going to be a week-to-week thing based on what the other team does,” said Pees, who coordinated from the press box in the college ranks. “You can actually see the game better, and see the problems and things like that develop easier from up there than you can on the sideline. You don’t have to have somebody tell you.”
With Pees in the press box, linebackers coach Matt Patricia has worn the red jacket on the sideline as the designated signal-caller. Pees was asked how it’s affected his feel for the game, not being on the sideline communicating with players.
“With Bill [Belichick] down there, it’s a little different in our situation, he can speak to the defense,” Pees explained. “A lot of times he would speak to the front seven while I was speaking to the secondary, or the linebackers and the secondary. The only difference is that he kind of now speaks to the whole group. That’s the only downside, that I’m not as close to the secondary and the players. But the upside of it is that we can get all the corrections maybe a little quicker and a little cleaner.”

Seem like time to get Romeo back... Where is Dom capers.. never seen him on sideline...
Pees is a terrible DC. Time to move on.
Maybe Dean needs to watch from the hotel room or from the CBS restaurant?
Maybe Seely should join him....
The reason Pees moved upstairs is he can't bear to witness up close what has become obvious to us watching on TV: Delta O'neil and Hobbs can't cover, James Sanders can't play zone, Merriweather can't tackle someone before the 1st down marker, Vrabel can't pass rush, none of the big three lineman can get to the QB. There's a reason Matt Hasselback and Curt Warner will be the happiest QB's in the NFL these next two weeks. Just ask Roethlisberger, Pennington, Favre, and Philip Rivers, who all had career passing games.
"NE fan with a paper bag over his head," please change your name to "NE 'fan' with a plastic bag over his head" because your hypothesis is terrible outside of your comment about Deltha Oneal! Get a grip of yourself fair weather fan, use your energy to cheer the fellas on through these last 4 games. Does the team have holes? Absolutely, but I refuse to doubt the Pats. They were beaten by a better team on Sunday-let's see what they do this week.
Seattle game plan:
Fullback dive up the middle on first down.
QB takes knee on 2nd down to get a 3rd and long.
The Pats can't stop 3rd and long.
Id be amazed if Pees is back next year as DC. Im pretty sure he's up there in the press box because BB is sick of the sight of him. BB's getting him used to watching the Patriots from a distance. Next year it will be through a TV screen, hopefully.
Having said all that, its not Pees fault that Thomas and Harrison and the rookie are hurt, or that the Pats didnt lock up Samuel when they could have.
Capers is not on the sideline ?
Then where the heck is he ??
He is up there so he is not in striking distance of BB ... he should have strangled him with his hoodie by now
Posterboy get your head out of the sand. For whatever the reasons the Patriots are taking a nose dive. If it wasnt for Wes Welker and Kevin Faulk they wouldnt even be competetive.
Mike,
This comments section is now being visited all too often by people who have no idea about football. How do we get things back on course?
Fair weather types and haters, the lot of you. He's up in the booth to try and do a better job with a patchwork secondary.
You don't get invited to BB's staff unless you know what you're doing. This is the same chicken little, blamegame, nitwit mentality that deemed Josh McDaniels would never cut it when he first took over for Charlie Weis.
To NIKOS... Who are you to say who knows about football or who doesn't. These comments are fans expressing their displeasure and their opinions, nothing more, nothing less. Who are you to think that because someone has an opinion that differs from yours that they might not be right, and that yours might be wrong, or the opposite. There is lot of frustration in Patriot Nation right now and fans have a right to speak their opinion, positive or negative, whatever it may be.
And, for the record, I too believe that Dean Pees is a horrible defensive coordinator. Granted, the team might not have the best available players at certain positions, but his defensive game plans, and schemes are pitiful and he is the one responsible for getting the best out of his players, and his schemes starts them off on the wrong foot to begin with. He is far too soft. My guess is, however, that you disagree with that, too. right?
