Report: Scott Pioli interested in Browns' job
The Cleveland Plain Dealer has updated its initial report regarding the Browns' interest in Vice President of Player Personnel Scott Pioli.
Writes Mary Kay Cabot:
Scott Pioli, the New England Patriots Vice President of Player Personnel, is believed to be very interested in the Browns general manager job and is expected to interview for the position soon, multiple league sources told The Plain Dealer today. The Browns have been granted permission by the Patriots to interview Pioli and could talk to him as soon as Tuesday. Pioli has also been contacted by either the Kansas City Chiefs or Detroit Lions and will interview for that job as well, a source said.

ugh...the window is closing fast
Like my old RSM (Regimental Sergeant Major) use to tell me, when the poop hits the fan, believe 1/2 of what you see and none of what you hear. I believe the Browns would do or say anything at this point to raid the Patriots organization.
Mr. Pioli is a smart man. The Browns aren't going anywhere in a hurry and he's not in a hurry to go there. My humble opinion.
I don't think it matters at this point. Anyone is replaceable except the Krafts. If they sell, I'm very concerned. Until then, no worries.
We panicked when Crennel and Weis left. We kept on. Something to think about, the Patriots promote from within, which means, if Pioli leaves, his replacement already works for them. Change the names and numbers, but the results remain the same.
11-5 with half the 'starters' on IR...
Mr Reiss,
I'm interested to learn your take on the Pioli matter. I've been expecting him to explore the possibility of leaving the Pats organizations for a while now, which would be a shame, since Pioli appears to be such a big part of it.
Big loss for our team if this happens? Would Kraft and his kid try to keep Pioli in the fold?
Mark Shapiro, the Indians GM, is Pioli's best friend so there might be some teeth to this story. On the other hand, there are more leaks coming out of the Browns organization and about 10,000 people there who think they could be the GM and/or coach better than whoever is there. It would be a large dose of hell to anyone who would accept the position, especially with those impatient fans.
Hope he doesn't go.
I think pioli wants to make a name for himself (if he havent done so already..) and among the teams that are interested in him IMO browns is probably the "best" of the losers to have a decent chance of a positive season next year - lions and kansas are dead in the water for a while - no decent QB attributes to a lot. Brady Quinn can become decent and they have decent WR and OK RB so having a positive season is more likely. This is the only team i think Pioli would want to go since i seriously doubt he wants to go to a dead in the water organization from a great one. I also think Kraft made a good decision to let Pioli be interviewed because he has done a lot for us and we shouldnt try to hinder him. Now if pioli starts to drag some players and coaches along then i hope it wont be like mangini...
"Multiple league sources (affiliated with the Cleveland Browns)." If Pioli really wants to make his mark on his own, then good luck to him. We should thank him for his efforts in NE and wish him well, as long as we aren't playing the Browns. Still, Cleveland is going no where fast. They have some talent and an owner with deep pockets, but they have been mired in mediocrity for the nearly ten year history of the Browns 2.0. Between BB and his father in law he will do his due diligence and will probably come to the conclusion that it isn't worth it. But then again, a ridiculous salary offer may entice him to try to relocate his Executive of the Year plaques.
Better do your homework. Scott Pioli already has worked in Cleveland. He was with the Cleveland organization when Belichick was there as coach. If Cleveland wants him, Cleveland gets him. He left his heart in Cleveland. I am just astounded how the media said Cowher would not go to Cleveland because of the rivalry.with Pittsburgh. There may be reasons why he is not going, but Earth to media, Cowher played and coached for Cleveland BEFORE he went to Pittspuke. It is just hard to do the homework.

Dimtrioff (sp?) worked with Pioli and has done well in Atlanta.
It is possible that Pioli's underlings have learned on the job and will simply be able to step in and do what Pioli did exactly. The only thing we would be losing is Pioli's "gut feeling". Pioli is the same guy that has a photo of Dave Stachelski (taken in round 5 in 2001) next to a photo of Tom Brady (taken in round 6 in 2001) in somewhere his office to remind him that he isn't perfect.
Personnel evaluation is an inexact science...and Pioli has been better than most...it will be hard to replace him, but you never know...
Why dont the Pats offer him the same title and pay?
do the browns had to trade to get pioli? and how much would they have to offer?
What is his contract situation? I imagine he's putting his name out there, doing interviews etc., in an attempt to extract a pay raise from the Krafts. I seem to remember he did something like this previously. A prudent business move, surely?
Mike,
With Scott Pioli still under contract with the Pats, what kind of compensation could be given to the Pats if he ends up leaving?
Craig, none since it will be a upgrade in job.
As part of Commissioner Paul Tagliabue's recent crackdown on
tampering, every team must designate one person as the organization's No.1
decision-maker on football matters. It is in writing in that person's contract.
Regardless of whatever titles are held or offered, the No.1 football man can't
leave for an other No.1 job, unless his old team permits it or agrees to a
compensation package. Pioli is not the Patriots' No.1 football man. Belichick
has that language in his contract. So Pioli could take a job elsewhere with
total football authority without the Patriots' permission." (newenglandpatriotstalk.com)
What kind of 'homework' do I need to do to confirm the "He left his heart in Cleveland" story?
Hey Lance, I am one of those impatient fans from Cleveland who has been waiting since 1964 for a championship. Remember how it felt to be a Red Sox fan a few years back? As far as pioli goes I believe it is all about the money. Thanks I only hope we can swipe your offensive coodinator at the same time.
