Mangini out as Jets head coach

Posted by Steve Silva, Boston.com Staff December 29, 2008 10:15 AM

Eric Mangini is out as head coach of the New York Jets.

Jets owner Woody Johnson and general manager Mike Tannenbaum made the announcement at a 10 a.m. ET press conference.

Former Patriots defensive coordinator Eric Mangini lost to the Dolphins yesterday to finish 9-7 and miss the playoffs. The Jets lost four of their last five games.

In other news, Romeo Crennel, another former Patriots defensive coordinator, was let go by the Browns this morning following a 4-12 season.

  1. If this is true, will Mangenius be asking coach Bill for his old job back with the Pats?

  1. Good bye Kevin James...er Mangini. Another stellar hire by J-E-T-S, Jets, Jets, Jets. I think Herm Edwards is available.

  1. Mangenius,
    Raiders on line one.

  1. Bert F, are you serious? Don't you think Little Eric has burned a bridge or two . . . . . ? These aren't little bridges we're talking about either. He burned the Golden Gate and George Washington bridges. Mangini is toast. Anyone else who would hire him couldn't trust him either.

  1. You better believe Coach Bill will smile a little to himself over this one...

  1. As much I don't like Mangeni, I would not mind havig him as our Definsive cordinator. He still a good defensive mind. If Romeo is not available.

  1. I know there were articles saying we should root for the Jets yesterday, but I couldn't do it. The Patriots did a great job this year in spite of missing multiple pro-bowlers for many games, but I didn't expect them to go deep anyway. Therefore, seeing Penninngton beat the team that dumped him was great and seeing Favre implode was better. I couldn't believe that after all of those errors, the announcers were still fawning over Favre.

  1. Let's say it all together: "You'll never work in this or any NFL town again, Eric." Turns out your gm didn't have your back after all. Enjoy being unemployed in the middle of a depression.

  1. 1. The least penalized person in the Spygate scandal. It's never mentioned that HE was part of the cheating in NE. Neither is it mentioned that he probably was spying his first year as coach in NY. Remember he had that 'miracle' season? Then he rats and goes 4-12. He lost a major tool.
    2. Good luck getting a job in the NFL ratboy. No organization is going to hire a tattle-tale. I heard Walpole High School may be looking for a new coach.

  1. Crennel's getting fired too, so he has first dibs

Posted by gick December 29, 08 10:03 AM
  1. With due respect, Mangini had to have Favre as his QB. Despite that burden, his team climbed up in the standings and actually beat the Pats once, as well as going into the last game with a chance to be in playoffs.

  1. I don't think we need him back Josh is doing a Damn good Job

Posted by Charles December 29, 08 10:05 AM
  1. Favre in the Probowl? Matt Cassel had a much better season, please go away Brett, for good.
Also Mangenius, good luck getting a job. Who is going to hire a snake in the grass like you who put a knife in his mentors back. Revenge is best served cold.

Posted by Grogan December 29, 08 10:05 AM
  1. Hopefully, Josh MacDaniels won't follow in Mangini's footsteps. Mike Tannenbaum would love to add Josh and Cassel to their roster.

  1. I doubt it.

I think he will be in the running for the Ceveland job.

    Mangini Coach
    Romeo Def Coordinator?

Any chance Romeo comes back here and replaces Dean Pees?

Posted by keithmac December 29, 08 10:06 AM
  1. Coaching that team in that town has got to be the toughest job in the world. He did a pretty good job. Coach Belichick ought to be proud.

Posted by ben hammer December 29, 08 10:07 AM
  1. Dean Pees did nothing that would merit losing his job as DC. It wasn't his fault that the Defensive Backs were crap and that the old linebackers were slow. The Patriots will be fine with the growth of Mayo, Crable, Guyton and the drafting of solid defensive backs and a free agent signing or two. RAC could come back as an assistant head coach. But they already have Capers in that senior role. Mangini will beg Parcells for a job. If the Tuna is smart, he'll turn the Rat down.

  1. Philip Rivers deserved the Pro Bowl slot ahead of Cassel and Favre.

Posted by JoeTheDrunk December 29, 08 10:14 AM
  1. This is not good news. The Jets have some good players. Now that Manfeeble is gone, they may get a decent coach.

Posted by Nel December 29, 08 10:16 AM
  1. I knew this was going to happen. being 8-3 with the AFC East solidly in grasp and then finishing third at 9-7 there was no way he wouldnt be fired.

    Adios MANJERK!

I don't want him back with the Pats, he's overrated.... but give me Romeo!!!!!

  1. Another character from "The Sopranos" gets wacked!

Larry - all that is true but look at how bad his team played during the past 4 weeks and look at the poor decisions that Ratgini made during those games. The Lions played better the past month.

I was hoping he'd get an extension today - that way the Jets could suck for the next several years.

  1. Couldn't have happened to a nice guy. Hah! I do feel sorry for Romeo, though.

  1. Go and get Crennel, you could demote or release Pees. Then you have Crennel turn Mayo and those young LBs into the monsters that he turned McGinest & Co. Please brong him back!

  1. Are you serious Charles? Josh is the offensive Coordinator, Dean Peas is the defensive coordinator. Mangini and Romeo are defensive guys get a clue before you post. I would take Romeo back in a heartbeat although I doubt the coach would replace Peas. They could always use a great football mind like Romeo's on the staff.

  1. Not too many players or coaches who leave the Patriots are very successful with their new teams. Team unity and focus have to be a major ingredient. Better to have a B plus team working together with one goal than a collection of stars (Cowboys, Yankees etc) who grab headlines and little else. Look at the small number of Pats' Pro-bowlers. Mangini has the best look of "pathetic" on his face of anyone out there! Of course he has the million$ that the average fan doesn't have, so I not at all sorry for him.

Posted by ljmel December 29, 08 10:41 AM
  1. Poster # 6, I agree, as much as I hate Mangini, he wasn't the main problem with the Jets, Favre was, how can any team be expected to succeed when your qb throws as many interceptions as touchdowns, he lost the game for them yesterday. They'll be worse next year, whoever's coaching them.

  1. A lone brightspot in a disappointing Pats football weekend. Hopefully, no head coach in their right mind would consider hiring Mangini now. He bolted the Pats and finked on his "mentor." Complete scumbag.

Bill Belichick should get coach of the year for the job he did this season. Absolutely brilliant coaching to get this team to 11-5 after all the injuries. What other coach in the NFL could do that?

Posted by NH Pats fan December 29, 08 10:47 AM
  1. As many have said. Woody Johnson basically fired Rib Boy from the league -- for life!

No one is going to hire this rat any time soon. If ever. The clown had the world in his hands just 16 months ago. And blew it.

To be 30something and HC of the NYJ, coming off a better than expected 10-6 playoff year, he had it all. And the he goes and stabs his mentor in the back for all the world to see.

    It's over.

  1. Mangenius can carry the Tuna's bags if the Dolphin's team is sold and he decides to opt out of his contract.

Posted by Dave December 29, 08 10:50 AM
  1. Serves him right, the last two Jet games were the worst coached games I think I've ever seen.

Posted by Mark December 29, 08 10:51 AM
  1. Let's hope the Jets hire a coach that loves running a 4-3 defense, so they can get bogged down trying to convert their defensive personal again. They have a good 3-4 nose right now, so it would be great to see them waist that investment.

Posted by Josh December 29, 08 10:51 AM
  1. That Patriots gravy train of coaches has officially ended. Mangina is done. Romeo is done as HC, but will get a DC position. Weiss is just about done at ND.

Teams will think twice before hiring away Patriot coaches from this moment forward. They are finally realizing it's BB!!!

Posted by Ffej December 29, 08 11:14 AM
  1. No doubt about it, having Mangini out is good for the Pats. There are intangible benefits (no more handshake analysis, putting spygate behind us) but some real pluses too--notably less competiton for Pats-type players (the Jets will be switching back to a 4-3 defense if they're smart).

  1. I hope that the league sees Mangini as the sanctimonious little dweeb that he is and blackballs him. He owes his head coaching position to the success that he achieved with the Patriots, by whatever means. To turn on the Pats like that shows that he is just like the stereotypical "psycho ex-girlfriend."

Now even New Yorkers can speak their mind and refer to him as the RAT that he is.

Great way to go down in football history, guy... Twenty years from now, everyone is going to remember you as a tool.

  1. I believe Mangina has burned his own bridge in the NFL. It couldn't have happened to a better person in my humble opinion. It doesn't take the sting out of an 11-5 team not qualifying for the playoffs (thanks to the idiotic NFL system) but it does help just a little bit. Anybody that is ignorant enough to think that other coaches have not bent the rules is just a fool. Mangina looks like a fool for being a tattletale, just like everybody hated a tattletale when we were kids. Good riddance to you Mangina, upsize my fries when I see you in the city for me okay?

Posted by money December 29, 08 11:27 AM
  1. JoeTheDrunk, Pees has done nothing to show us that he can run a defense. The schemes were nearly as vanilla as they were when Mangini was DC, and the personnel usage was a bit...odd...at times. The defense underperformed when you consider the quality of players they had. Granted, in the latter half of the season the injuries became overwhelming, but before that the D was not playing up to their abilities, as it did almost every year under Crennel.

And how much longer do we have to watch Belichick coaching linebackers when the offense is on the field? I'd prefer Belichick play the role of head coach during games.

Posted by MarkZ December 29, 08 11:52 AM
  1. Too bad the AFL is on hold next year - it'd be the only league to give him a chance to coach. Too bad he learned an invaluable lesson in life on not burning bridges.

I would think his only chance at meaningful employment would be to lose a lot of weight and go on one of those Slimfast commercials.

Mangini's about to discover the real world is cruel place to be right now. Add the fact he's not much of a leader and the future doesn't look promising. Wish I felt bad for him but I don't.

  1. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAH

After yesterday, this is about a good as year-end gift as a Patriots' Fan could ask for.

Just a little -- actually, a fat -- jerk who was simply in over his head. Belechick told him not to take it, but he did. And now, at such a young age, he is headed for I-AA or an Assistant NFL job for the rest of his career.

    Too bad, so dad.

  1. This is a beautiful silver lining around an otherwise cloudy day. The Pats didn't make the playoffs while an 8-8 Chargers team did, but Mangini is GONE! Good riddance!

That is so SWEET! Every once in a while, justice prevails. I hope that SOB never walks an NFL sideline again. I hope he goes to college or high school where he belongs.

Romeo will be on the Pats' sideline, unless someone else hires him as a head coach, which I doubt will happen. Can't wait! I think Dan Pees remains the DC and Romeo gets an assistant head coach title like Bill B did when he returned to the Giants from Cleveland and Al Groh was the DC.

  1. Funny how 5 weeks ago people in New York were talking about a "Subway Superbowl" (even though that's impossible because (1) they play in Jersey and (2) the Superbowl is in Tampa but that's for another day) and look at both New York teams now! One team shot themselves in the foot and the other team went 1-4 down the stretch when all they needed to do was win 1 additional game, and they lost to teams like the Seahawks and Broncos!

Mangeni deserves to lose his job but in his defense I don't think he ever wanted Brett Favre on his team. Heck, he might have even asked the JETS to fire him so he didn't have to coach him next year and deal with the New York media during this off-season. I will miss his sour face on the sidelines, but I'm sure a school like Washington St. or Arkansas Pine-Bluff will be looking for a coach sometime soon...who am I kidding...YOU DONT DESEVRE A JOB...just remember Eric...when everything is all said and done with spygate and everything else, THAT THE LAST LAUGH IS ON YOU!!!

Posted by Jeffrey Higgins December 29, 08 12:44 PM
  1. This is really bad news for the Jets because they spent so much money this year that I do not think they have much left for a new head coach to work with. About the only thing I think they can do is cut Brett Farvre and be thankful that they only lost a third-round pick in the exchange. That will free up approximately $12 million in salary cap room, which sould be enough to pick up a working project QB in the second round or late first round.

The fact that this announcement came so quickly suggests to me that dis-satisfaction with Mangini's performance has been brewing for a while and the decision was made potentially weeks ago but they wanted to wait for the season to end before announcing it.

    Posted by Justin-R December 29, 08 01:12 PM
  1. Mike Tannenbaum illustrates everything that is wrong with the Jets. He blows the #6 pick and brings in a bunch of old guys that break down at the end of the year.

Then he goes to the boss and convinces him that the need to fire the coach (who was his friend).
    Brilliant!
The Jets won't win with Tannenbaum running the show! hee hee

  1. Mangenius. What a predictable fate for this average coach. He now is relegated to coordinator status. He won't be a head coach for awhile, if at all. Let's not forget they outmanuvered themselves and traded up to get Vernon Gholston, who last I checked was sitting on the bench while Jerod Mayo was cementing himself as one of the top rookies.

  1. To Joe the Drunk---- Pees does deserve to be fired, also. You say he did nothing to deserve being fired? I question that considering it took Pees abaout 11-12 games to figure out just how weak the secondary was and to make the changes in defensive philosophy to a more agressive, attackng the quarterback, style, including safety blitzes, by Merriweather in particular who caused two QB fumbles with safety blitzes. Had he done that earlier, had Pees played that style of game, who knows where the Pats would be today. Had he been agressive in overtime, at home, against Favre on 3rd and 15 from their own 15, they would probably be reporting for practice tomorrow. Sorry Joe, Pees needs to go, but I doubt that BB will can him as BB is very loyal to his assistants and rarely, if ever, fires one.

1- Mangeni is interviewing for the Browns' head coach's job.( So much for never being an NFL coach again !!!!)
2- The Pats also didn't make the playoffs this year. Hee hee hee hee.....
( Don't give me the old BS excuse about injuries or the ludicrous NFL playoff system. Many teams can use the same excuses).

The bottom line is that the Pats just like other over the hill teams got what they deserved: Nothing, nada, niecht...
