Warner pens Belichick notes

Posted by Mike Reiss, Globe Staff December 17, 2008 04:55 PM

FOXBOROUGH -- Arizona Cardinals quarterback Kurt Warner is widely considered one of the NFL’s classier players, and he’ll occasionally pen notes to those around the league to express his admiration for their accomplishments.

For example, Warner sent Patriots coach Bill Belichick a congratulatory note after New England beat Warner’s Rams in Super Bowl XXXVI. He sent another one to Belichick last year after the Patriots’ 16-0 regular season.

“I’ve sent him a couple things along the way, basically saying ‘Hey, what an accomplishment,’” Warner explained on a conference call with New England reporters this afternoon (3:05 p.m.). “That Super Bowl, I thought was a tremendous accomplishment for their team. I have a lot of respect for Coach [Belichick], the players there and what they accomplished, and that organization.”

Warner explained that as a fan of the game, he likes to take the time to salute excellence.

“I love to watch great people do whatever it is they do great,” he said. “Football is one of them. I love to see greatness. I love to see people accomplish things people say they can’t accomplish, and what people don’t expect them to accomplish, and just do their job in an excellent way. There are times along the way where I see something and just want to recognize somebody’s greatness. It’s not really that big of a deal, but something I like to do to let them know someone is out there and appreciating what they’re doing.”

  1. Warner is a classy guy. I never heard him complain about reduced roles to Lienart or Bulger. The guy is a pro.

  1. OK, he's a classy player but, that being said, let's hope our defense knocks the crap out of him on Sunday. Not to get hurt, but just to knock the crap out of him. (lol)

If the defensive coaching stafff does not go after him from the getgo, and plays a soft defense, with the receivers they have, it will be a wipeout by the end of the first half, their favor. Warner needs to be roughed up to have an effective game against this Cardinal team, and I have watched almost every one of their games this season. Great receivers, solid inside routes, and give Warner time, he will find the open receiver, and Boldin, FitzGerald and even Breaston know how to find the seams.

  1. Classy guy. Too bad the same can't be said about his wife. But in all honesty, one of the all around good guys in sports. Never a complaint, just the drive to get better. Many out there should take a page from the Kurt Warner book of handling yourself as a professional athlete. I hope Plaxico takes note.

  1. Warner - classy guy ? Give me a break. He can say what ever he wants now, but remember him bashing BB during Mat Walsh's 15 minutes of fame.

  1. Good point about his wife RB.

And, for the record, he did crybaby a bit abaout Leinart.

  1. Fair enough that he says this, but I do remember him jumping on the "Bash the Patriots" bandwagon last year questioning the validity of their first Super Bowl. I think it's easy for Warner to be gracious now that things are going well for him. If he said this when he was carrying Leinart's water, then I'd give him props.
