Webster injury settlement; Patriots host 2 on workouts

Posted by Mike Reiss, Globe Staff December 4, 2008 03:49 PM

The Patriots reached an injury settlement with CB Jason Webster, who was placed on season-ending injured reserve Tuesday. Webster hurt his ankle in Sunday's 33-10 loss to the Steelers. The injury settlement means that the Patriots no longer retain Webster's rights.

In cornerback-related news, the Patriots hosted Darrell Hunter and Roderick Rogers on tryouts this week. Both Hunter and Rogers are first-year players. Rogers ended up signing with the Vikings' practice squad.

  1. How are they first year players if Hunter played in 2006 and Rogers played in 2007?

  1. What is the motiviation for the Pats to do an injury settlement with Webster? Is it just to save money? What was his contract?

  1. Mike, whats the implication of this move? Is it that Webster is essentially a free agent at this time? (or next season)

  1. Hi Ry. They are first-year players based on accrued seasons. David, the implication is that Webster is now a free agent.

  1. Why didn't they sign Law or Hall?

  1. maze4muz: Law or Hall did not want to come to New England. BB attempted to sign both of them. Law said his best chance of winning was with the Jets and Hall wished to play for Washington because of his Virginia roots.

Also, these are free agent trash pickups. One of these guys was cut by 5 teams already. Desperation move for the Patriots, should have kept Samuel. Hopefully in the future, they make sure not to lose their shutdown corner.

  1. Rogers will never make this team. He is 6 ft 2. Belichick prefers corners that are around 5 ft 8 inches tall and can not cover one on one.

  1. Mike Allen: You are right on in terms of what BB looks for in a corner. But you left out the part about not being able to play zone.

BB is a genius but they have been struggling at CB for too long.

Law and Hall are old. Samuel was not a shutdown corner, but could play zone better than any of the guys they have. He would not have been worth the money.

I am still puzzled by the decision to cut Lynch. At this point, I don't think it would hurt to have him.
