Welker fined 10k

Posted by Mike Reiss, Globe Staff December 24, 2008 01:16 PM

FOXBOROUGH -- Patriots receiver Wes Welker has been fined $10,000 for making a "snow angel" in the team's 47-7 victory over the Cardinals on Sunday, colleague Christopher L. Gasper reports.

Gasper caught up with Welker today in the Patriots' locker room, and asked him about being fined. Welker said he wasn't sure if he would appeal, but he acknowledged his snow-angel-making days are over.

"It was a spur of the moment deal, and you can be sure that it won't happen again," Welker told Gasper.

Per NFL rules, players are not allowed to go to the ground for a touchdown celebration (unless it is a prayer). The official reason Welker was fined, the NFL confirmed today, was for "unsportsmanlike conduct for participation in an illegal demonstration by going to the ground."

  1. making a snow angel after catching a TD pass should not carry the same fine amount as throwing a snow boulder at a fan after losing a game.

    no fun league strikes again.

  1. I guess the Joe Horns, Chad Johnsons, and Terrell Owens of the league have ruined it for everyone. This is absolutely ridiculous. This was not a staged, "look at me" experience. This was a young man from the south, playing on predominantly southern teams, having fun in the snow. Plain and simple. The NFL truly has become the "No Fun League".

  1. It's ok for the player to spike the ball and then to do a 'dance', but doing a 'snow angel' draws a $10k fine! Does anyone in the league office get it? Sorry but I don't see the 'unsportsmanlike conduct' here, except that of the league office. I suggest rather than buying any NFL licensed merchandise this coming year, we instead make a donation to help pay Welker's fine. Any extra $ that come in can go to a local food bank. What do you think folks?

  1. wait a minute Ellis of the JETS hurls a 20 pound block of ICE into the stands and could have broken someones neck and he gets fined the same amount.

    the commish is losing it!

  1. The NFL management is an absolute joke. I think they actually overreact to anything done by the Pats to show everyone that they do not give them preferential treatment.

10k for a snow angel is absurd and shows just how out of touch the NFL management team really is.

The NFL should donate that 10k to a charitable cause....

  1. If Welker wasn't a well paid athlete I'd suggest the fans take up a collection on his behalf.

  1. Absolutely ridiculous fine. If I was the player's union I would hold out because the NFL is getting totally out of control. Making a "snow angel" on the field doesnt show up the other team or hurt anyone.

  1. I think the fine should be the same as an illegal hit to the knees of the best QB in football, or a late hit to defenseless receivers after the play is dead (no fine).

I think the NFL should also refrain from using so called "unsportsmanlike conduct for participation in an illegal demonstration" in highlight reels or in advertisements for the NFL Network (ie. TO Popcorn celebration of last year).

  1. absurd.........i mean great the money will go to charity but come on, its a snow angel. kids do that stuff playing in the streets hoping to be in the NFL someday. like mark said, its not like he threw snow at the fans. i hope he appeals

Posted by DS December 24, 08 02:05 PM
  1. I agree, there is no way that this was as bad as the snow boulder. That could have and may have hurt someone, whereas Welker didn't hurt anyone. A penalty is one thing, it is against the rules, so I understand the call (although the rule is ridiculous), but the fine is over the top.

  1. Goodell is ruining this league! I can respect his efforts to clean up the game a little bit but he has gone WAY overboard. His fines for 'illegal' hits are excessive enough... now he's moved on to snow angels?? Utterly ridiculous!

  1. So, by the NFL's logic, had Welker been tackled and was already on the ground, and then while on the ground, prior to standing up, made a snow angel, he would not have been fined. Right...???

  1. DS --- I don't see in the article any mention of the fine going to charity.

Wheatver happened to using good judgement. Sure it's against the rules, give the penalty on the kickoff and be done with it. The NFL loses credibility in my book every time they react like this. These are the same folks that want to keep us from saying S***r B**l unless we give up a royalty fee or pay to hear a game live on the internet. Supply and demand at work. Well my demand lessens every time the NFL shows thier greed.

The penalty seemed absurd enough, but then again, I'm sure that all players we're warned in the preseason about the dangers of "ground-based celebrations." But let's save the fines for circumstances that truly warrant them. League officials should be embarrassed by this nonsensical response.

Absolutely ridiculus. The rules need to be changed to at least give the on-field referee some leeway in these situations. The Commish needs to spend some time at any pre-school in New England during the winter. Then he needs a time-out.

  1. What we see here is the NFL defining what they consider unsportsmanlike
behavior. Chest pounding, butt thrusting, growling and otherwise barbaric
behavior is sportsmanlike because it is permitted. The NFL sets the tone on what
is expected of men and athletes. Even more moronic is that they use this angel
example to define a celebration expressing personal joy as unmanly.

Excuse me, but did anyone see Mr. Welker get hit by the Steelers’ Ryan a couple
of weeks ago? Ryan was not fined, instead a yellow flag was thrown and a few yards of
penalty for unnecessary roughness. This was sickening and Ryan should well be
prosecuted. Welker, on the other hand was not only an example of amazing athletic
health and stamina but a man whose behavior following the attack rose far above that
of a good sport. Define this as sportsmanlike, if not angelic.

Home Depot's ex CEO getting more than $1/2 BILLION in severance for almost single handedly destroying Home Depot? It's just another show of supreme arrogance by the corporate heads of any of our countries elite. Goodell? Anyway, it's not unsportsmanlike, in my opinion. It's fun and makes the game fun! Who's the Carolina Panther player that "burped" the football and "rocked"it like a baby? Steve Smith? I also loved the canoe in the endzone! Keep them coming! They pay the fine to their favorite charity, & they can afford it too! Who gets hurt in this? The Charities? I don't think so!

Do you really care that a millionaire slot receiver gets fined $10k? That's like $75 to us. We should forget the NFL theatre. And, from one amazingly class individual: Wes Welker. Takes a cheap shot, in one game, now, the NFL takes a cheap shot.
    Screw the NFL. They're idiots.

  1. Fining someone for making snow angels is a ridiculous response to a genuine expression of happiness. Geez. Sorry, you can't express joy and happiness. That will be $10,000 dollars, please. I mean the NFL has enough PR to worry about with players of less-than-stellar character and they're concerned about snow angels? It's beyond absurd.

Posted by Robin December 24, 08 10:24 PM

    Posted by Norman R wearing #80 December 24, 08 10:45 PM
  1. Of the 158 comments, I'm the one who thinks the fine wasn't enough. If they're going to fine players for that type of activity they should make sure the fine or penalty has some bite. 15 yards and $10,000 is chump change and a slap on the wrist.

The NFL should negate any play in which a penalty of that degree happens. So, in this case the touchdown would be negated. That would teach these overpaid, overdumb athletes to behave on the field in a respectful way.

    What say you?

Posted by Jeff December 24, 08 10:59 PM

There are so many morons in the NFL driving drunk, beating their wives, etc. making news for all the wrong reasons and here we have a good player having a little fun in the snow, giving the fans something to smile about and officials waste time coming up with this? Don't they have something better to do or something worse to punish? How foolish...

Posted by Annie December 24, 08 11:40 PM
  1. If the NFL is going to assign financial penalties to relatively benign actions like this, then I move that they donate 100% of the paid fine to the player's preferred charity. Give me a break -- in this day and age, I'd like to see a man like Welker as a role model for kids, snow angels and all.

Posted by Heather December 24, 08 11:51 PM
  1. The celebration was lighthearted and didn't demean anyone, it was joyous and fun. Just rediculous to ask the man to pay $10k for that... and as others have mentioned, Welker nearly had his head taken off a week or two ago in a completely gratuitous hit, and there was no fine for that... yet for him making a snow angel, it's a $10,000 offense. With judgement like this, they should replace the commish with a monkey - you'd get more sound and consistent reasoning, I am sure .

Wes Welker is a little queer. The best thing I ever saw was Ryan Clark drilling his gay little but back to Miami. The only bad thing was that he got back up. You guys act like you're entitled to preferential treatment from the league, when actually you should be black-listed from the playoffs and pro-bowl, and the Super Bowl titles stripped because you're no good cheaters.
Belichick sucks, he's a hack of a coach. Oh yeah, the Celtics and the Red "tampon blood" socks suck too.

What was the harm in the Icky Shuffle, The Fun Bunch, Butch Johnson's Six Shooters, The New York Sack Exchange, and the Dirty Bird. By todays rules, Billie "White Shoes" Johnson would be fined for his end zone celebration and he is a legend for it. The NO FUN LEAGUE is too strict. By the way, why is the Lambo Leap or Terrel Owens makin a T, O, with his arms not a penalty? I never remember any fights or threats coming from an end zone celebration.

God forbid if any American speaks out or portrays anything publicly that shows the world they're Christian ! Can't do that because we might offend the Muslims.....and/or all the rest of the religious groups that have taken over our country.

Stupid example:The employee at Lowe's that got fired because she had a button pinned to her sweater that read,"It's Christmas for Christ's Sake." Someone complained and she got canned on the spot.

She says to the boss man,"Why is it ok for us to sell Christmas items, nativity items etc....,but I can't wear this pin?"

    What a joke.
