I guess the Joe Horns, Chad Johnsons, and Terrell Owens of the league have ruined it for everyone. This is absolutely ridiculous. This was not a staged, "look at me" experience. This was a young man from the south, playing on predominantly southern teams, having fun in the snow. Plain and simple. The NFL truly has become the "No Fun League".

It's ok for the player to spike the ball and then to do a 'dance', but doing a 'snow angel' draws a $10k fine! Does anyone in the league office get it? I agree, there is no way that this was as bad as the snow boulder. That could have and may have hurt someone, whereas Welker didn't hurt anyone. A penalty is one thing, it is against the rules, so I understand the call (although the rule is ridiculous), but the fine is over the top.

Goodell is ruining this league! I can respect his efforts to clean up the game a little bit but he has gone WAY overboard. His fines for 'illegal' hits are excessive enough... now he's moved on to snow angels?? Utterly ridiculous!

But let's save the fines for circumstances that truly warrant them. League officials should be embarrassed by this nonsensical response.

This simply was not "unsportsmanlike". He was in no way trying to show anyone up. He was happy and having fun in the snow. Does anyone really believe the Cardinals "feelings" were hurt by this? Absolutely ridiculus. The rules need to be changed to at least give the on-field referee some leeway in these situations. The Commish needs to spend some time at any pre-school in New England during the winter. Then he needs a time-out.

Welker takes a shot that could have, should have been a fine in the Pittsburgh game, and the guy get's fined for a "snow angel"! Fines should be based on intent. Come on commish! You have reversed fines in the past, reverse this one and show a little Christmas cheer for pete sake!

Fining someone for making snow angels is a ridiculous response to a genuine expression of happiness. Geez. Sorry, you can't express joy and happiness. That will be $10,000 dollars, please. I mean the NFL has enough PR to worry about with players of less-than-stellar character and they're concerned about snow angels? It's beyond absurd.

How can the No Fun League officials determine that Welker was not doing the snow angel as an act of prayer? Are they serious when they came up with this fine?

I can just barely understand the ref thinking he has to enforce the rules as they are written in the rulebook. But a $10,000 fine? What are they smoking down there in the league office?

Of the 158 comments, I'm the one who thinks the fine wasn't enough. If they're going to fine players for that type of activity they should make sure the fine or penalty has some bite. 15 yards and $10,000 is chump change and a slap on the wrist.

The NFL should negate any play in which a penalty of that degree happens. So, in this case the touchdown would be negated. That would teach these overpaid, overdumb athletes to behave on the field in a respectful way.

This is absurd! I agree with those saying the NFL network should not be able to show any of the footage from these "finable" offenses. That makes them HUGE hypocrites. They make money showing these acts of "unsportsmanlike conduct" and then fine the players doing it? Please!!!

It's a sport - a GAME - and there's "no fun allowed"? There are so many morons in the NFL driving drunk, beating their wives, etc. making news for all the wrong reasons and here we have a good player having a little fun in the snow, giving the fans something to smile about and officials waste time coming up with this? Don't they have something better to do or something worse to punish? How foolish...

If the NFL is going to assign financial penalties to relatively benign actions like this, then I move that they donate 100% of the paid fine to the player's preferred charity. Give me a break -- in this day and age, I'd like to see a man like Welker as a role model for kids, snow angels and all.

The celebration was lighthearted and didn't demean anyone, it was joyous and fun. Just rediculous to ask the man to pay $10k for that... and as others have mentioned, Welker nearly had his head taken off a week or two ago in a completely gratuitous hit, and there was no fine for that... yet for him making a snow angel, it's a $10,000 offense. With judgement like this, they should replace the commish with a monkey - you'd get more sound and consistent reasoning, I am sure .

It's hard to believe they would fine Welker so much for a spontaneous, unplanned action. It certainly wasn't meant to harm or offend anyone, so I can't see anything past $500 being even remotely reasonable.

The Lambeau Leap should be unsportsman like conduct. It sure is taunting the opposing team about the touchdown. It needs to be banned and fined if it happens.
