Welker penalty explained

Posted by Mike Reiss, Globe Staff December 21, 2008 03:29 PM

After Wes Welker caught an 11-yard touchdown pass in the second quarter, he was penalized for unsportsmanlike conduct after making snow angels on the field.

The rule enforced by Bill Leavy's crew is that a player can not go to the ground in an act of celebration, as it is deemed excessive. The only time a player may go to the ground in that situation is to pray.

  1. Nice explanation, what a stupid rule. Pray, whomever brought religion into sports should be nailed to a cross ;)

  1. Officially The No Fun League. Perhaps Welker was praying to a snow angel and that was his of doing it?

Would not want to invite Goodell and/or his staff to a party because I'm sure every five minutes they'd remind you of all the suffering going on in world...

  1. Welker was guilty as charged. I think Welker is a class guy and was probably just having a little fun ....... but rules is rules!

  1. Isn't making a snow angel kind of like praying?

    Just asking.

  1. in my opinion i think they've gone just a tad bit overboard with the rules..... a touchdown celebration is a touchdown celebration. end of story.
making snow angels after a touchdown shouldn't be flagged. HE WAS JUST BRINGING THE KID OUT OF HIMSELF AND PROBABLY HAD FUN MAKIN IT!

  1. if it was favre everyone would of just said he's just being a kid and he just loves to have fun. remeber when favre high fived the ref? if it was chad johnson he would of been fined and the ref wouldn't of high fived him.

  1. No one to blame but, TO, Joe Horn, Chad Johnson, et al. You could see Welker's face on the sideline just after the TD, when the Ref made the call to the stadium. He kind of looked "Who, me"!

  1. He was just having fun in snow. I agree, that should not be flaged, If it was september 70 degree weather he does snow angel, then you can flag him.. but there was snow on the ground, its december.. almost Christmas..thats was just wrong...

  1. Peter hit the nail on the head.

I wish Belichick would do some sort of over the top celebration, just for experimentation purposes. I bet he'd be sentenced to life in prison.

  1. Snow *angel*. He was just giving a sign to God. So God could see it from up above.

OK. So now if a player is jumping around after a TD and falls over, he's "gone to the ground". So, penalty?

  1. I really don't think the penalty hurt them any in this game.

Garry, you should lighten up. Unless, you work for the No Fun League. Why are we taking all the fun out of playing football? You can keep your stiff upper lip but let players have fun. Go check out the CFL.

  1. This is where Refs should use their judgment. Did Welker violate the letter of the law? Yes. Did he do something in good humour, which the increased the enjoyment of the game by the fans? Yes. The rule's there for a good reason, but it needs people who aren't a jobsworth to enforce it. I just hope this party pooping refs don't get the invite to Wembley in 09.
