Video: Reiss on loss of McDaniels, Pioli
The Globe's Mike Reiss talks about the departure of Josh McDaniels and Scott Pioli, and what the losses mean to the Patriots. Click on the player above to watch the video, or check out a written summary below.
Written summary:
In the short term, the loss of McDaniels is likely to hurt more as coach Bill Belichick must move quickly to fill the holes on his staff. Ultimately, the system should trump everything else and the Patriots are more likely to look within their organization than bring in someone like 49ers offensive coordinator Mike Martz.
Director of player personnel Nick Caserio could slide into Pioli's role and will be aided by a year of experience in the front office last season, but filling Pioli's shoes is no easy task for the Patriots.

I think we have seen that no one is irreplacable. On the Patriots, as long as Bob Kraft and Coach Belichick are in control, all of these supporting personnel and coaches can be replaced. Certainly it is much easier to replace a McDaniels or a Pioli than it is to replace an athletic talent like an Asanti Samuels, as we well know from this year. We will move ahead seamlessly, without doubt.
The Patriots have transcended success and have officially become the Boston Celtics. We now see countless ex-coaches and personel littered across the NFL, in some capacity, just like you do in the NBA. It's a thing of beauty to see.
No one in Patriots Nation should worry here. Bill Belichick and Robert Kraft will make the right moves to fill the needs. I'm looking forward to our draft this April and free agency as well. Our boy Brady will be back next season (hopefully) and all we really should be looking at is to sure up our defense especially at safety and corner. The Pats should have another great year and should go deep into the playoffs returning to glory!! Go Pats!!
I find it very funny that media and others keep blasting the Pats as cheaters and only won because they tape other teams, yet they all pounce on how the team achievments were due to great coaches and Pioli and paint the franchise in a rosy color. Am I missing something? Hypocrasy? I cannot stand ESPN, anyone else? Mark Shlereth annoys me, anyone else?
I think it is a refreshing change. Maybe it will shake things up for this team as the last few drafts have been challenging in the way of impact players. Scott Pioli was good but he can be replaced.
Hayo: I couldn't agree with you more. It's really become a joke. ESPN loves two things: Brett Favre and drumming up anything related to spygate and the whole cheating thing.
ESPN and Mark Schlereth annoy everybody. Yes, I agree.
Mike, what are the chances that Brian Daboll would be under consideration for offensive coordinator? Or is he forever tainted by his association with Mangini? It looks like we're running out of qualified in house candidates to fill in the vacancies. Any scuttlebutt on who're the possibles for the coaching vacancies?
I'd give more credit to Pioli. His loss will hurt not only by not being here, but by being in charge in KC he will be using the same information and thought process to draft to fill KC's needs.
Scott will be missed!
Even though Bill usually promotes from within I think it is time to change that way of thinking. He has said he admires Mike Matrz 's schemes and since is available I think they should bring him in some capacity. As long as the price is right and I am sure Martz would like to rebuild his image from the 2 bad stints with 2 bad teams. The Pats with a healthy Brady and a decent running attack would be very hard to stop and along with more attention Bill could give to the D,the team will go to back to the hylcon days of the early 2000's. The window is still open and when you think of it with one play or another they could have had 2 more championships in 2007 2008 under their belt. Now is the time to make the move forward and bring Martz in.
Amen brother Hayo. Schlareth really gets my blood boiling on that issue. He claims to be a former proud member of the Broncos O-line that used to intentionally break the legs of defensive linemen and backers with cowardly and illegal crackback and chop blocks. Just ask Brian Cox.
Hayo -
i agree but keep in mind that ESPN has become the new "WWF". They have stolen Vince MacMahons successful sports entertainment model from "Pro Wrestling" and just want to keep exploiting the "good" versus "the evil" so they make money. The problem is as follows: In the WWF it was all fake so no one got there feelings hurt. In Pro Football it's real sports with people no actors and ESPN has an agenda. In order to drive their agenda to maintain profit they hurt fans, players, coaches, owners etc. They don't care because its all about the money.
No need to worry they always seem to recover from thier personell losses.
No need to worry they always seem to recover from thier personell losses.
DOOMED !!!!
What is it about success and winning every year that make people think this is a good time to leave. If only people could invest with the mentality of an NFL coach or executive - always looking for a bottom to get in, and a peak to get out.
Hayo I agree with you 100%. ESPN is a joke. Their so called football experts Trey Wingo, Mark Schlereth, Tom Jackson, Shaun King & Merill Hodge are nothing but media cheerleaders. It's obvious who each of their favorite teams are. Wingo is a Colts fan. Jackson is for any team that is playing against the Patriots. Hodge is slurping the Steelers kool-aid. King is for any team that Phony Dungy coaches. My advice to you is to tune ESPN out (like I have) and stick with Felger and Tanguay along with PFW in progress. Don't forget that Mark Schlereth was a part of that famous Denver O-line known for chop blocks and breaking legs.
McDaniels is a non-event. You're dealing with not one, but two solid QBs, and let's remember that McDaniels was basically nowhere and was plugged in. Pioli is a bigger deal--one can argue that the Pats have been the most savvy "business" builders in the last several years--he's run the war room. It won't show next year--most of the scouting is already done for 2009 and the combine doesn't really tell you anything, but remember the Pats are a team in transition, especially on defense. My guess is Pioli knew it was going to be a tough restructuring of the defense, and that's why he opted to go now--he's had many other chances in the past to go as GM to other spots.
The Worldwide Mis-Leader in Sports is too hard to watch. It's so obvious they all can't WAIT to see the Pats slip because of how good we are and how committed we are to our system, which (gasp!) actually works! I'm no Jason Whitlock fan, but he is totally right that ESPN has become nothing but personalities masquerading as sports journalists. Pioli will definitely be missed, but Belechick created him. Just like he did Mangini and McDaniels. He will again.
No Matter the situation Bill Belechick always has something up his sleeve for success. Scott Pioli and Josh McDaniels we're tutored under Belechick's matermind and will be great in their opportunities 2009 is gonna be great for the Patriots I know it and everywhere else in Patriot Nation knows it as well 11-5 after Brady went down that tells you Belechick knows how to cope with these situations.
I believe that Pioli is way overrated and was riding the coattails of Belichick. Some of the excellent draft picks were directly related to contacts via Bill, such as Logan Mankins. There were also recent draft, 2007 I think, that was was a huge bust, the Randy Moss move not withstanding and anyone recall the highly coveated Wideout by the name of Chat Jackson? I have nothing against Pioli but I think he is not the brainchild that most label him as ...
We should know by now, although all of us get excited about the pro sports teams
that represent our section of the country,it's just a business and business deals with the bottom line for the owners,PERIOD ! The Pats let Samuel go,The Red
Sox are jerking Varitek around,Why? MONEY,and the view that everyone is replaceable,so Pioli and McDaniels will be replaced just like Weiss & Crennel,
it's BUSINESS ! There are a lot more important things to be concerend about that I don't really care, let Bob Kraft care he has to put people in the seats to keep the franchise's value, that's it !
I happy to see that others feel the same way I do about ESPN. I have said it before and will say it again ESPN sport readers have a serious MAN CRUSH for the over the hill and over rated Brett Favre!!!
I think everyone should relax, we still have the best player personel in the league. The Pats will be ok
McDaniels is just another lost coordinator that will be replaced as Weiss, Mangini and Crennel were. Pioli was invaluable in organizing the schedule of all the scouts, personnel evaluation and in contract negotiations. Jerod Mayo was one of his endorsed picks as was the entire front three, Mankins, Light. If you think he will be replaced with someone with anywhere near the kind of draft sucess he had, you need to stop drinking that kool-aid. If Brady even plays in 09 it will be at a average level. I take a line from Braveheart....'The good lord will take care of me, but I'm preety sure your fooked!"
As a pats fan living in Germany I'm able to catch live US sports (NFL, MLB, NHL) via the NASN channel (North American Sports Network) for a reasonable price. But the program is already filled with lots of ESPN shows and magazines (NFL Sunday countdown, NFL Primetime, Around The Horn, Pardon The Interruption,NBA Fastbreak, etc.). After the Superbowl that channel will be renamed in ESPN America. Then i'll be in hell. They will probably cancel all live action (besides the MNF, of course) and get me an anti-Patriot-brainwashing for 24 hours.
