Additional 2nd round pick in solid spot
With the San Diego Chargers losing to the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday in the divisional round of the AFC playoffs, it helped the Patriots' draft position in the second round.
The Patriots own the Chargers' second-round draft choice.
The positioning of that pick was contingent on the Chargers' success in the playoffs. Had the Chargers advanced to the Super Bowl, the pick would have been in the 31st or 32nd position of the first round (and subsequent rounds).
If the Chargers did not advance to the Super Bowl, they would pick in the 16th spot of the first round, based on their 8-8 record.
So now that the Chargers have lost, the Patriots' selection in the second round is in the middle of the round, not at the end.
The Chargers are part of a five-team cluster at 8-8. Those teams will rotate each round, so the Chargers' pick in the second round is 15th, which is 47th overall.

Any word on Pioli's future?
Another move that paid off for the Pats, mid-second rounders can give you some of the best value for a smaller risk in investment!
I believe that the Charger pick moves up to the 15th spot in
the second round.
I am starting to love how this draft is shaping up. To begin with, it's a pretty solid draft. The Pats have (potentially) a lot of picks at good spots in the first few rounds, and there is still the possibility of gaining another top pick or two in a Cassel transaction. Their position in the first round is ideal as well. They are in the second half of the first round of a deep draft. That means none of the headaches of having a top ten pick and the contract hassles that are sure to follow. Finally, if they do trade Cassel and garner more picks, they will have a lot of trade maneuvarability in the first couple of rounds. Say it with me, "Taylor Mays baby!"
Good point, Mike, but I wish the Chargers would've beaten the Steelers (because I hate the Steelers) and then lose next week to Baltimore, so the Pats would still a middle-round pick for the Chargers' 2nd rounder. That would've been a real win-win!
I can't remember how we got San Diego's 2nd rounder - can someone remind me?
Hi Boston Fan. They traded a third-rounder to the Chargers during the 2008 draft and the Chargers selected RB/FB Jacob Hester. In return, the Patriots got the 2009 second-rounder.

great another Wheatley or chad jackson
San Diego gives trades their 2009 second round pick to the Patriots for the Patriots 3rd round pick, where SD picked Jacob Hester at pick #70 in the draft, right now it looks as if the Patriots will get to draft #47 or #48 in the draft - basically moving 22 -23 places up in the draft order. Pretty good deal if you ask me.
Mike,
Thoughts on who they or what position they would go after? DB, OL, LB? Just curious. Keep up the great work Mike.
Maleuga (sp?) LB from USC would be awesome to have next Mayo, what a tandem that'd be. Too bad he'll be gone by the 23rd pick probably.
>>great another Wheatley or chad jackson
I get the point about chad jackson, but You are giving up on Wheatley already?
wheatley is 5'9, has a robotic arm and a history of injury. and he's already made a trip to the IR in his fist season.
What is wrong with Wheatley
Wheatley plays pretty well in dime packages on madden 2009 for wii!
yeah...there's never been a good CB at 5'9...this gick guy sure knows a ton about football...
Wheatley will be a good cb.
gick, have you watched one minute of the Patriot's season? Wheatley is blazing fast and has great cover skills - it is a shame he got hurt when he did - he was playing well - in fact he injured his wrist breaking up a pass. I hope this is just a spate of bad luck and that he fully recovers and avoids future injury, if he does, he could be something special.
Knowing Belichick's passion for trading draft picks, I don't expect the Pats will keep this one.
