All-Pro honors for Gostkowski

Posted by Mike Reiss, Globe Staff January 9, 2009 01:00 PM

Kicker Stephen Gostkowski was named to the Associated Press All-Pro team today, the lone Patriot selected to the first-team squad.

The All-Pro team is selected by a nationwide panel of 50 sportswriters and broadcasters who cover the NFL.

Unlike being selected to the Pro Bowl, in which top players from each conference are honored, being a first-team All-Pro carries additional meaning because there are fewer spots and it encompasses the entire league.

Gostkowski, who led the NFL with 148 points, including a league-high 36 field goals, is the lone All-Pro kicker. He received 28 votes, 15 more than the runner-up, John Carney of the Giants.

Wes Welker finished fourth among wide receivers in the All-Pro voting, receiving six votes, which earned him a spot on the second team.

Randy Moss got one vote. Logan Mankins was fifth among guards with four votes, while Jerod Mayo, the AP Defensive Rookie of the Year, received one vote at inside linebacker.

  1. Congrats to Gostkowski!

The list of cornerbacks getting All-Pro votes includes "Asante Samuel, New England, 3".

  1. Correction: Gostkowski is the only FIRST Team member; Welker was selected to the Second Team.

And, BTW, Jerod Mayo got a vote for ILB, Randy Moss for WR, and Logan Mankins got four votes for guard.

  1. Welker made the second squad, according to NFL.com.

  1. it has been a great year for Stephen. Imagining last year with bill not having confidence for him to kick that field goal to where he is now..maybe BB made the mistake of not using him to kick that field goal...

  1. Alex--from a statistical standpoint, it wasn't a mistake. Arguably, between the 20s, unless you have 4th-and-20 or worse, it's almost always better to go for it than to kick or punt.

Maybe it was a mistake in *this* case, but the numbers were on BB's side. In any case, who knows what happens if they go for it--maybe they win in a rout, maybe they lose in a rout. But I'm not going to get on BB (or Gostkowski) for the decision; it was what it was.

  1. The way I read it, Mike Reiss had it right between first and second teams? Relax guys... everyone is ready to pounce on him with corrections... the weekend is here and the "attitude in the town sucks! It stinks! "

  1. He had a good year, but really was he the best kicker in the league? I'm surprised.

  1. Adam who??

  1. Vince led Kris Jenkins in all key categories. An example of the media reacting to hype versus performance

  1. We all remember that mistake by Belichick that was one of many he made in that Super Bowl. It was one of his worst coaching jobs ever, it turned out. Too bad that it had to happen on the biggest stage. Maybe next time he will have some mature assistants like Weis or Crennel to make some of those difficult calls to actually win the game....wait, he did have that once.

And maybe he didn't. You don't know that we still would have lost by three points.
I believe at the time it was 7-3. You make a first down and get a TD and it's 14-3. We were at the Giants 31, if you miss the FG, they get it at the 38; if you don't make a first down they get it at the 31. I think field position more than points there was the other deciding factor.

  1. Gostkowski is a good kicker but the jury is still out for me. He has great leg strength (definitely an upgrade over Adam) but really, has he had to make a single game-on-the-line type of kick yet? Correct me if I'm wrong but I haven't seen him in the type of situation that Adam produced in so often. I hope he turns out to be a clutch kicker but I need to see more evidence than a bunch of 20-35 yarders in the middle of games.

  1. Thanks Mike, I've always wondered about the difference between All Pro and Pro Bowl.

  1. Yes... Gostkowski was the best kicker in football... He also was one of the league leaders (at least top3 if not THE top) in touchbacks. Limiting the opposing teams field position to their own 20 after receiving a kick off is huge.

  1. I agree with Alex, it was a mistake. It was 4th & 13 yards to go, not 4th & 2 or 3 . What is the worst that would have happened, he misses the FG and they get the ball on the 31 yard line? They didn't convert and still turned it over on top of the fact it was a domed stadium, no weather issues. To this day, I believe that the spygate cloud mentally affected the team. Even though they are professional athletes they are human beings and we all have had personal issues affect our mental attitudes.
When the report came out, I was sick to my stomach and even the most ardent Pats fan had to think could this possibly be true.I will never forget or forgive the irresponsible journalism that put on damper on what should have been the greatest day in our teams history. 19-0

  1. Not one vote for Big Vince..he is as domnating on the interior line as any DT in the league...and not one vote...please

  1. Boy, I just hope that this list does not continue to go the way of the BBWAA with voting based on love affairs as opposed to skill & actual results game after game. These type of lists will always have some questions , but they need to avoid the "HYPE" Trap, as mentioned by Fast Eddie. No doubt in my mind that this list has some names that fall into that category. It just lessens the meaning of the whole thing.

  1. well done Stephen. next year will be very good to us. i can feel it.

  1. Wilfork is the best noseguard in the game, hands down. Kris Jenkins is just a big money free agent that did nothing close to his hype. In fact, he was so inept that in the second game against the Pats, Jenkins was on the sideline most of the game b/c his fat butt couldn't keep up with the no huddle offense....If he could have, then they would have kept it as a 3-4 or atleast let him stay on the field when they went to a 4-3, which btw, was the defense that Jenkins played in alot when he was with Carolina.....How does someone that can't stay on the field due to his own inadequacies get votes???

  1. ARE YOU KIDDING ME??? Mike Scifres is the BEST PUNTER IN THE NFL. Did he NOT prove that on Saturday? And WHEN will Philip Rivers get the freaking respect he deserves?? Best passer rate, most TDs. What a joke.

  1. Oh yeah, because Weis and Crennel have proven themselves to be such terrific coaches..HAHA. give me a break. Belichick's the best coach in league history and that's that. He'll win a few more before he hangs up the hoodie.

  1. Fast Eddie, I'm a huge Wilfork fan, but Jenkins WAS that good this year. Best NT performance I've seen since Ted W in '03.

  1. Nice going for the Ghost. He should buy McDaniels a anice gift for helping him lead the league in scoring. McDaniels piss poor play calling in the red zone meant that Ghost had a lot more field goals to kick instead of extra polnts.

But, Gostkowski has become a solid kicker, one of the best and his Kickoffs, for the most part, are awesome.

    ALL THE WAY PATRIOTS!!!!!!

  1. Chargers, Rivers is nothing but a foul mouthed jerk. Women hate him because he talks just like a girl. He talks trash without umm ever having won anything. Who talks more trash - a certain 3 time Super Bowl winner or Rivers?

But you're right Scifres is the best in the NFL, but will soon be replaced by King Louie.
