Bill Belichick comments on Josh McDaniels

Posted by Mike Reiss, Globe Staff January 12, 2009 04:36 PM

Patriots coach Bill Belichick has released the following statement regarding Josh McDaniels today:

"Josh McDaniels is one of the finest people and brightest, most talented coaches I have ever worked with. Since joining us eight years ago, Josh performed a variety of roles and excelled in every one of them. Between his work on defense, in scouting, player evaluation and coordinating the offense, Josh is a very well-rounded coach whose outstanding body of work speaks for itself. He is the product of a pure football environment which is evident in his approach to the game. On behalf of the entire Patriots organization, we thank Josh for tremendous success in New England and congratulate him and the McDaniels family for this most deserving opportunity for advancement."

  1. How does this compare to when Mangini left? It seems (at least the perception I get from the media) that Bill isn't as upset at him leaving as opposed to when Mangini left. Will there be any of the craziness that we saw with the Jets when we play the Broncos? Or will things be more subdued? Or was all the hoopla just because Mangini went to the Jets?

  1. Have we ever heard Belichick make such comments about anyone?

  1. Probably because Mangini told Belichick he wasn't going anywhere, then went to the Pats fiercest rival. McDaniels was probably straight up and honest with Bill.

  1. utter class!

  1. Rick - I doubt McDaniels was trying to recruit players in a back stabbing way. Plus he's also not in the same division, thats a lot different too.

  1. McDaniels is going to try to steal Cassel from us. Lock up Cassel IMMEDIATELY or else we're going to lose him! Also, be on the lookout for a Michael Bishop signing. McDaniels loves molding raw talent into superstars.

  1. I bet someone from the Pats' public relations department wrote that statement and Belichich just read it.

  1. Mangini went to the Jets and also was only a coorfdinator for like 1 year

  1. The "product of a pure football environment"? Hmmm, there is still the WoMangini stench in the air. I still can't get over the fact that Eric, who made his bones in the Patriots organization, turned out to be such a dirty rat. Looks like Bill can't either.

  1. The problem with Mangini's departure was that he didn't fulfill his promise to BB. He also went to the Jets. He also was trying to recruit players/coaches to go with him during their flight back from Denver(?)

  1. Thanks Josh and good luck but enough about our former offensive coordinator... Its time to hire a replacement and start thinking about the 2009 Patriots.

  1. I'm assuming Josh wont be trying to steal everything he can (including coaches) as he leaves the building, so he has that going for him unlike Mangini.

  1. Holy Unequivocal, Batman! if that isn't an endorsement, what is? I bet within the rules JMcD consulted BB on the Broncs organization and his potential fit.

This lends credence to the belief that BB has long known and planned for Josh's departure. One can easy extrapolate then that SP's likely departure has long been anticipated, too.

Time to properly manage this key staffing evolution is clearly one of the reasons behind BB's season ends early "silver lining" thoughts. Wonder what other non-player changes are to come? (easy now, you Dean Pees haters!)

  1. hey Rick -

not sure but what I heard was that Mangini was trying to recruit Patriots personnel while still on the payroll and still in the Patriots offices before he resigned. This is extremely unethical in the corporate enviroment and I am sure this was frowned upon by Bill, Scott and the Krafts but Bill took the brunt of this because he was constantly being asked every press conference.

I am sure Josh would not handle himself in that manner and I wish him the best of luck in the future.

  1. You don't follow much football. It's not just a matter of leaving. Josh Mcdaniels has been there 8 years, has no options for advancement, and is clearly worthy of a head coaching job. Mangini was a coordinator for 1 year (a year after both coordinators left, and Bill had a 'we need a guy who is going to be here for the long haul' talk with Mangini), and upon arriving in New York, Mangini did NOTHING except attempt to acquire every Patriots player he could, including an incident bordering on tampering.

  1. Jackie Ryan--
Why would McDaniels try and take Cassel when the Broncos have Cutler? That makes no sense...Cutler is one of the best (if not the best) young arm in the game and is probably one of the main reasons McDaniels took the Denver job. Oh but i do agree with you on the impending Michael Bishop signing.....you're kidding right?

Posted by Ush January 12, 09 05:43 PM
  1. Why would they take Cassel in Denver? Jay Cutler anyone?

    Posted by Sonny_Corlione January 12, 09 05:44 PM
  1. did someone just seriously mention watch for McDaniels to sign Michael Bishop?! Is this 1999?

Posted by Chris January 12, 09 06:01 PM
  1. Jackie Ryan -- get a clue. Denver has their QB -- Jay Culter is young and already a Pro-Bowler.

  1. Don't you know that BB put the franise tag on Cassel? Any way the Brons already have a very good backup.

  1. Big shoes to fill, welcome to the team.

  1. He was being sarcastic about Cassel and Bishop. Jeez Guys, get a clue

  1. A great mentor wants his underlings to be successful.....that's what makes them great!

Nice touch Coach! You may be a man of few words but you garner the utmost respect here in New England.

  1. Belichick was upset with Mangini because Eric did the same thing Belichick did to the Jets. Took a job then spurned the team and went to the division rivals. Mangini and Belichick are cut form the same mold...same reason why Belichick and Parcells have feuded over the years..cut from the same mold! Now Mangini will take over a Browns team and bring them to a place where Romeo and the master himself failed to do!!

  1. Go BB, Go JMcD!

Posted by Pam January 12, 09 07:33 PM
  1. Why do these teams keep wanting the Patriots staff can't they find coaches on there own they have to take from other teams Who will they get to replace Josh why don't they re hire Romeo Crennel the players loved him. plus Pats haven't won a super bowl since he left.

Posted by Paula January 12, 09 07:36 PM
  1. It's different 2 ways: 1) BB didn't want Mangini to go to the Jets - he dislikes the Jets (possibly because he didn't get any support from owner Woody Johnson when he was buying the team) and I think that is why he bolted to NE where he knew Kraft wanted him.
    2) it took awhile before Bill named a Defensive Coordinator when Romeo Crennell left for Cleveland. He probably wanted a committment from Mangini that he would be around for at least 2 years. Mangini bolted after one year and Bill had to get another coordinator.
Also, spygate - something Mangini took part in and then blew the whistle.

    Posted by Steve N January 12, 09 07:49 PM
  1. Maybe the "silver lining" is this means Bill does'nt see his end in sight.
    Good luck Josh
    Next Please

  1. Crennel might be coming to Denver to be the D corridonator....FYI.

Posted by Ryan January 12, 09 08:53 PM
  1. JMcD gets a good organization with a nice blossoming QB. Cassel? Get real.
BTW, Mangini = "What goes around comes around" for Bill "Mr. Sunshine" Belichick. Same guy if you ask me!

I am enjoying the fact that NE is talking about next year and the Superbowl of Pennsylvania is only 1 game away!

  1. Ummm Ryan...Mike Nolan has been linked to the Coordinator job in Denver. Romeo will likely stick around with his buddy Mangnious in Cleveland or go back with his tail between his legs begging to get back with Cleveland. And besides...Romeo has no link to McDaniels. Romeo started his pro career with Belichick, Parcells and Mangini...

  1. Jay Cutler IMO will be better then Elway. Why would Josh try to take Cassel????
Cutler was in the top five passing leaders almost every weekend and he IMO is better then Cassel.

  1. Why would a great franchise such as the Broncos' go after the offensive coordinator of the Great New England Patriots after a scandal like SPYGATE.After all wasn't it the cameras that gave them the edge.(lets see if ESPN talks about that)
This shows that the owners...coaches and people that really understand what goes on in this leaque know that Bill Belichick is a great coach and that this leaque(spygate) violation is like a pimple on an elephants butt compared to what really goes on.HE WAS A SCAPEGOAT THAT TOOK A BULLET FOR THE REST OF THEM.
Bill is stolid man with more class than most of the coaches in the NFL and one of the greatest minds xxx's and ooo's EVER .HALL OF FAME.
He has had his name dragged through the dirt by sport ANALyst and writters that couldn't carry his lunch.
Know wounder bill won't give the Media the time of day.
    Good luck to Josh.
I guarantee there will be a hand shake and most likely a small smile for him at the end of a game.
I'm sure the media will pick that apart too.

  1. Who will ref the "SB of PA" Arlen Specter ? Mangini did more than just recruit players and coaches on the plane on the way home from a playoff loss in Denver, he also stole the pats personnel files and those of the players on other teams. This was confirmed on a Jets/Fins broadcast earlier this year when the commentators said Eric had shown Chad Pennington the contents of what was in the Pats file on him. How exactly did he come to have that while HC of the NYJ ?
In addition there is this question of the laptop computer that was Pats property that he took with him. Did he ever return it and what was on its hard drive ? Note the differences between the way in which Eric the Rat left town and the way that Mr. McDaniels is doing so hence the different reactions from BB.

  1. The rumor I heard was that Mangini stole a copy of the Pats playbook (offensive system) during the week BEFORE the Denver game so that it would already be in his possesion once word got out about the Jets offer.

Even if we don't know the exact details, it is fair to say that BB and the rest of the Patriots staff (including Pioli) thought that Mangini was a scumbag for some reason and they do not feel the same way about McDaniels.

If you are a Pats/BB homer, then that is all that you need to know.

  1. I don't think it has anything to do with Mangini going to a division rival. The difference between McDaniels and Mangini is that Josh did not use his coordinator position under Belichick as a stepping stone to a head coaching job and showed his loyality to Belichick for bringing him into the NFL. McDaniels had opportunities over the past 2 years to interview for head coaching jobs but declined several interviews partly out of loyalty to Belichick and partly as he was waiting for the right fit and not going into a job where he was destined to fail as so many coaches do now. (See Browns, Lions, Jets, Raiders, etc..) McDaniels stock has soared because because of his decision to stay with the Pats and because he did not abandon Belichick at the first head coaching opportunity that came along.

  1. First of all, romeo crennal didn't start with eric magini. crennal started with parcells in NY. and followed him and belichick around. he paid his dues, just like mcdaniels has. magini is a rat. Question, who gonna be O.C. now in new england?
