Brady on rehab: It's going really well

Posted by Mike Reiss, Globe Staff January 21, 2009 06:46 PM

Patriots quarterback Tom Brady was a guest on Fan 590, a Toronto sports radio station, to promote a toxin-free sports cream. From a football perspective, he was asked how his rehabilitation was going.

Brady did not provide a timetable for his return at any point during his 10-minute interview, but answered the question on his rehabilitation this way:

"It's going really well. Anyone who has come back injuries that require surgery, it's just a process. There are some good days, some bad days, and you just have to keep plugging through them. That's life. Like I said, things come up and you just have to focus your energy and attention on all the positive things that you can gain. It tests you in a lot of ways. Like I said, I'm excited about the process, I'm excited about the work -- there are so many wonderful people that have helped me. I said I'm the most well taken care of knee patient in history. I'm very, very fortunate."

Earlier in the interview, Brady was asked a question about what it was like to be on the sidelines for most of the season. His response:

"You play this game long enough and [expletive] happens, so to speak. The reality is that it happens to everybody. I'm at a new part of my career and a different process that I'm excited about -- rehabilitation and different challenges. The tough part is that you're not experiencing something you love to do. But you get over that and focus on what you have to focus on. You just say 'OK, it happened, we're moving on,' and that's what we've done."

At the end of the interview, Brady was asked about the Patriots' defections, such as offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels and vice president of player personnel Scott Pioli. His response:

“There is change every year and I think you have to get used to that in the NFL. You look at Tony Dungy, for the Colts, the head coach, he retired. … Every team deals with it. We dealt with it about three or four years ago with our two coordinators, Charlie Weis and Romeo Crennel. Eric Mangini left. This year, it’s different defections. They’re incredible coaches that have been a huge part of our success, they get opportunities. People who work hard deserve those opportunities. They take with them all the great memories and experiences they’ve had from our team. It’s the responsibility of the people who are still with the Patriots to worry about the Patriots. As long as we have Robert and Jonathan Kraft, and as long as we have Coach Belichick, I would think we’re going to be just fine.”

In terms of the interview itself, here were the questions that were asked to Brady, in order: 1) Were you glued to your television set yesterday during the inauguration?; 2) You went to Africa in 2007 with a group organized by Bono, what was that like?; 3) Would you assist if the president asked, post-career or offseason, to get an African initiative going to help the greater good?; 4) What was it like to spend an entire football season and not play?; 5) Did you still watch everything or did you tune it out over the course of the season?; 6) Does it surprise you that the Cardinals regrouped and got to the Super Bowl?; 7) How is the rehab going?; 8) What are your thoughts on this product?; 9) Did you always ice your arm?; 10) Does it make it difficult, as a quarterback, when you have coaches leaving the Patriots?

The interview can be heard here.

  1. yeah, I listened to the whole thing.....he said what I expected him to say, you know he wasn't going to give any nitty-gritty details. Time will tell. I'm optomistic, hopefully all the gloom and doom stories out there were just your usual media panic mongering (not you,Mike)...........what was the deal with that mysterious "pain cream" they were talking about?.....I found that to be a little strange........The guy doing the interview uses the cream and then he was surprised to hear Brady is a spokesman for this "cream"??..........that was weird wild stuff

  1. What has happened to this guy, from a humble QB to what he is now, a TMZ darling jetting around the world with a supermodel. He hasn't said a peep to any Boston media outlet since he got hurt, Patriots fans don't care about your carefree lifestyle, you can talk to the media here and not worry about Giselle married questions, all we want to know is how you are doing and if you will be ready in 2009. . Now he finally speaks and it is to promote a sports-cream in of all places, Canada .... Ehh.

Tom, you have lost touch with your fan base.

  1. Patrick, good point about what we care about. Fix knee, run offense. Telling us something interesting about the team or football would be a plus but no one cares about his politics.

Congrats on the shout out Mike, I think you receieved mention from either Peter King or B. Simmons.

  1. No offense Patrick, but I completely disagree with you saying Brady has lost touch with his fan base. We all know no matter who interviews him right now, Boston media or Canadians, he will give the same response. Heck, he's been trained by the best of 'non revealing press conferences': Belichick. We would all love to know more details but its Brady's body, not ours. All I know is that Brady is one of the most hard-working, competitive, team players in the NFL. He'll be back on that field at some point and the competition better beware.

  1. Tom does have a fan base in Canada especially here in NovaScotia......Go pats in 09

  1. Why is it such a big deal that Brady has been silent? I am sick of tired of people criticizing him for his lack of communication. Why the heck do you (and so many others) care about his lifestyle? Has he done anything yet that has affected his play on the field? Doesn't he deserve the benefit of the doubt considering his work ethic over the years (winning offseason workout awards) and his history of 100% commitment? What does speaking to the fans/media have to do with throwing a football? If he shows up, does his training regimen, and then eventually throws TDs, I don't give a rat's behind what he does in his spare time. If the way he conducts himself is good enough for Belichick, then it'll be good enough for me. [And don't think for one minute that the reason he is silent isn't related to what Belichick wants.]

  1. Leave the guy alone He knows what he is doing . He owes nothing to any body to talk about anything. I am sure he will be back as good as ever. The guy is very smart and plays into the half wits that cover him and follow him. just like the master BB from which I am sure he learned from. We are lucky to have him. O by the way what is the name of the concoction he is hawking , my back is killing me I also drive an Audi wear a Movado , guzzle Mineral water and reek Stenson . Tom is the best.

  1. easy there Patrick, easy......I think you are letting your imagination run amok......since when have ANY Patriot players talked IN DETAIL about injuries?.....it's common knowledge that it's against policy to do so...........relax, as far as working hard to get back in playing shape,Brady is the last one to worry about.......don't blame Brady because TMZ cameramen follow him around 24/7

Posted by Dryheave January 21, 09 07:41 PM
  1. This interview sure shows Tom's loyalty isn't to the fans of Boston. I'll be surprised if he comes back in 2009. Maybe next he can give an interview to the media in Brazil or maybe Costa Rica.

  1. Patrick,
Patriots players are invisible around the local media when they are rehabbing. Can you name 1 player in the Belichick era that was available to the local media during his rehab? You make me embarrased to be a Patriots fan.

  1. Wow, I got blasted... I was merely saying instead of going on Toronto radio to promote a sports cream that he likely has a financial interest in, how about hand picking a Boston sports writer, TV reporter or sports radio person and do a interview with them. I highly doubt Reiss, Felger or whoever would pepper him with "Are you engaged" " when are you getting Married" type questions.... it would be a safe interview .... all the fans want to know is how he is doing, his thoughts on last season and his thoughts on the upcoming season.... I hate to say it but it all started when he scaled back his workout sessions at Gillette and lost the prime parking spot. He has become "Hollywood Tom Brady" .

  1. tom brady will play in 2009 go pats

Posted by justin January 21, 09 08:20 PM
  1. Brady will be fine, most people like to compare his injury to Carson Palmer and how terrible Palmer is doing now ... most people forget that in 2006 Palmer came back and made the Pro Bowl and what people forget is that Palmer tore his Patella tendon as well as his MCL and ACL, a far more serious injury than Brady's. Look at Philip Rivers, he had surgery after the AFC Championship game last year and was able to rehab and get in shape and play this entire season.

Yes the infection slowed down his rehab but if Brady got the infection say in January or February of 2009 then we should have been worried .. he will be healthy and he will be ready to play at a high level. Plus 2009 will be a contract year for Moss so he will be at his absolute best guaranteed.

Pats will be fine in 2009, Defense needs some help but getting everyone back and healthy should do the trick!

  1. Obviously you do have the patience for it since you felt you needed to post on here. Get over yourself. And to all of you being critical, get a clue. Tom Brady is a 3 Time Super Bowl champion, 2 Time Super Bowl MVP, NFL MVP, one of the best quarterbacks to ever play, and a celebrity. No one's given anything to him; he's earned everything he's got. Out of touch? He's an NFL athlete. How in touch are you with NFL athletes? Give me a break.

Posted by scotdome January 21, 09 08:47 PM
  1. You get big enough, there are always people in Boston who want to see you fall. Tom Brady gives it his all for the Patriots and there are people like Patrick who just want a lunchpail pedestrian quarterback. It's funny. People won't realize how special this guy is until he is no longer here. There's Russell and Williams (before my time). There's Orr. There's Bird. There's Tom Brady. If people can't appreciate that, that's pretty sad.

  1. Glad to hear what Brady thinks of Bono. Zzzzzzzz....

  1. The guy has earned every perk he has received. I'll judge him on the football field not his personal life. The rest of you critics: GET A LIFE.

Posted by oceancitydude January 21, 09 08:57 PM
  1. People like Patrick need to feel that their sports heroes live their lives just for them and their adoring fans. Its good to hear Brady's alive and well and enduring what has been for him a horrible ordeal. He's an amazing athlete and I'm confident he will come back strong and determined to lead the Patriots to another Super Bowl win... and that's all that matters.

  1. Good points made all around....should be interesting to see how this plays out because Brady's track record is impeccable, however he has never been injured either....and women have a crazy effect on guys (especially ones that make 35 mil a year).....he could come back and win the MVP...or he could retire and live in luxury forever after winnign 3 Super Bowls.....either way wouldn't surprise me in the least....GO PATS!

  1. All of you Brady criticizers are ridiculous, or just plain jealous that he chooses to live the jet setter lifestyle and not hang around Boston all thetime just so you can all feel better about yourselves.....as far as I can tell, as a football player and QB for the Pats, he's still Tom Brady- a great player who gives his team and Pats fans 100%. As a previous poster stated, we are lucky to have him.

  1. Who in their right mind would want to be a "TMZ darling" it is the downside of being famous.

As for loyalty does being a Patriot mean he can't give interviews to out of market radio stations? No, maybe no one around here cares about the cream or more likely he is told where to give interviews by the marketing department or PR people of said cream. Is it wrong of him to do endorsements? Does it make him a bad person or teammate? No

  1. Part of the unspoken deal re living in Boston is eschewing overtly vulgar displays of wealth, bling, supermodel girlfriends etc. So yes, Patrick is right, Brady has lost touch with his fan base - and oh my god - I can't possibly sit through the interview - but is he really hawking topical sports cream?

Posted by Jen January 21, 09 10:32 PM
  1. Brady will be back with a vengeance-the Pats will kick some rear in 09, count on it. Brady is the best since Montana-needs to take his place in history with 1 more.

  1. I'm with you Patrick. Brady act is geting really really old. He'll make media appearances if he's hocking something but can't be bothered to sit down and answer basic questions for the local media/fans around here. FruFru Brady's nose is a bit too high in th air these days to be bothered with us common folk.
What Tom Terrific needs to comprehend is that he hasn't won jack since he started jet setting. In fact his playoff performances have been less than stellar in recent years. Time for Giselle's boy toy to recommit to football. If not then the unthinkable will happen - Patriot nation is actually going to start to question the genuine commitment of Tom Brady.

    Posted by Mike66 January 21, 09 11:10 PM
  1. seriously, you people make me sad and disgusted to be a Pat's fan, or at least one among "fans" who have no idea what they are talking about. where have you been? As soon as Brady got hurt, you knew you would hear absolute silence as far as football is concerned, so what else did you expect? The only thing NOT off limits to the media as far as Brady is concerned, is Brady, his life and lifestyle, things HE has a say in, they can't control what he says ABOUT HIM! But they can moitor what he tells you about his team, injury, or anything else the
Pats own. oh yeah, the Pats own his injury too, it's not his...
When it comes to footballl, our team, what makes you think you have ANY chance at getting any info? What, cuz we're loyal? ha!
Here's a twist, Brady, Coach B., and the satff DO CARE ABOUT THE FANS, which is why they impliment such a strict NON MEDIA rule. they want to win, for them, for us, PERIOD. The media is and has proven themselves cancerous, it's for your benefit.
and what do you want from Brady, you KNOW he can't talk, so, what else is there? Can you blame the guy, just because we are blue collar, jealous guys, for doing what he does with his life, cuz we can't, and all we have is sports? He still wins off season awards for improvement, attitude, and most of all, his team mates, the ones who SEE HIM, TALK TO HIM, PLAY WITH HIM, every day....they trust him,, just cuz you don't, and decide to call EEI and bitch and cry into your dunkies cup on the way to work...doesn't mean any of you have a clue what your talking about.

  1. I've had two acl replacements on my left knee, both from my hamstrings. Good quads, hamstrings and calf muscles are crtical, he knows that. Lateral movements will be slower but drops and passing motions fine. Let the medical people deal with it not fans.

  1. Trade Brady and get a linebacker and picks from San Francisco. Go with Cassel he is big and mobile and will only get better. We have already seen the best from Brady and though it was great it ain't gonna be good enough to win another SB.
Especially with the the defense aging and slowing down. A good young linebacker and some high picks is more valuable than a damaged Brady!

Posted by FXHiggins January 21, 09 11:57 PM
  1. I am from Toronto and the guy Tom spoke with. Bob McCowan, is an ex-American who, whenever the whim takes him, bashes the NFL and is certainly no fan of the Pats. His show in July is hockey hockey hockey. I wished Tom spoke with someone else because I know the radio audience walks lock step with this douche-bag and Tom doesn't do himself any favors talking to these guys. He would have done himself and his product more good if he talked to the dj's at WEEI.

Posted by Neil January 22, 09 12:15 AM
  1. Why do some people not realize that the only reason you think Brady looks like he doesn't care anymore is because of all the stupid no-life cameramen who follow him around when he is doing nothing. I bet you my life savings that if you privately asked Brady, he would say he would do anything to just live his life privately and only be in the spotlight on the football field. If you followed any other player around with a camera while he was out on the town with his wife, you would see the same thing. Brady is a human with a private life just like everyone else (except those who spend their time on this board bashing him). How quickly do you forget that in the midst of all his "jetsetting" with Gisele, he set the NFL record for touchdown passes in a season. The pathetic part is you guys will be the first ones cheering when Brady starts dominating again next season.

Posted by pyegian January 22, 09 12:26 AM
  1. Is it me or does Brady look worn and tired, as well as a bit gaunt.

He looks beat...after 4-5 months of rehab, he looks like crap.

Franchise Cassel. Brady raises more questions than anything at this point.

  1. Tom Brady is and has always been one of the most humble superstars in professional sports. He doesn't mix Giselle and football or flaunt her at the stadium. He's one of the hardest working and dedicated players in the game. If there's a way for him to be ready for 2009, he will be. It's not like he was a super mobile quarterback before the injury. He, along with Peyton Manning, are the best pocket quarterbacks in the game. He has great pocket presence and avoids more hits and sacks with subtle moves than he does by leaving the pocket. He'll be fine.

Posted by Garry January 22, 09 12:44 AM
  1. matt66 you've got to be kidding me. you are trying to assert that Brady hasn't accomplished anything in the past few years and his playoff performances havent been stellar? Were you even around for the perfect season, where he set the TD record as well as leading the team to the super bowl? i don't know if you're an emotional bandwagon guy that jumps off as soon as it starts to look bad or if you're just misinformed but Tom Brady is the best QB in the league (he was before the injury adn I believe he still is) and a future hall of famer. So before you tell him to get his act together, look at his numbers and production and not base your fault assumptions on the merely the scoreboard.

  1. You should really screen your comments before allowing them to be posted. The lack of civility and understanding of other viewpoints (mostly from the "How dare you criticize someone!" crowd) is horrendous. It's like PatsFans.com here. Horrible.

  1. "What Tom Terrific needs to comprehend is that he hasn't won jack since he started jet setting. In fact his playoff performances have been less than stellar in recent years."

Making it to the super bowl mean he won 2 out of 3 last years seems pretty good to me, and I don't believe they lost that game because of him, they lost it in spite of him and his injured ankle. The year before that I don't remember him losing in the first round. Unless the Pats win the Superbowl every year he's sold out? Try being a little more realistic.

  1. Those bashing the greatest quarterback that's ever played the game are the ones in the wrong, and I am frankly appalled by. What I will see about these "people" (in old times people of such little intelligence were probably drowned at birth) is that their anger and jealousy towards Brady is a manifestation of their anger at their own insignificance and that fact that most of these people would be overmatched flipping burgers in their real lives.

If brady says hes ahead of schedule and will start no problem, then other teams that may want cassell now have less urgency kniwng the pats wont franchinse cassell and keep him. so they get to give less to get more.
    you gotta understand this business.

You people are ridiculous. He didn't choose to do interview or "pick" anyone to do an interview, he probably contractually had to do one for the product he's pushing. I highly doubt after not speaking to the media for six months he all of a sudden decided to grant an interview. Who cares if he talks to the media? His personal life is none of our business. As long as he is healthy come June, that's all I care about. You people need to get a life. There is being a big sports fan of a team, and then there is being obssessed. Brady has given us 3 SBs, the greatest regular season ever, and tons more memorable moments over the last eight yearss, and has been the consummate professional athlete in this crazy city we love. Give him a break

  1. Amen Erin!
For all of you who question Brady and his turning into a Hollywood boy, ask yourself this question: Would Tom take a trip to Mexico with his gf the week before a huge playoff game, or would he be preparing as hard as anyone on the team? If you picked Mexico then you obviously have not followed the Patriots this past decade. Let the man live his life and stop fretting. He has done nothing to embarrass this franchise. He is one of the best of all time. It makes me sick Pats fans call him distant, Hollywood, and say to trade him. You all really don't know how good we all have it as New England fans.

NBA records on the road are significantly lower than at home? I'm sure these guys aren't in their rooms watching TV and drinking milk shakes. Let it rest.

  1. I hope Tom never comes back. He sucks. The only reason he looks so good is because he is surounded by the best supporting cast ever. Not to mention one of the best coaches to ever coach the game. All you patsie fans want proof...LOOK AT WHAT MATT CASSEL DID THIS SEASON. He hadn't played a game since high school and did just as good as brady. That ought to tell you all you need to know about Brady. Brady sucks and is way overrated.

  1. "He hadn't played a game since high school and did just as good as brady."

Hey Dan, I must have missed Matt going undefeated in the pre-season and breaking the touchdown record. Truth is under Cassel, and I am not knocking Cassel, the Pats did NOT make the post season and Cassel had less than half the number of touchdowns Tom had last season with the same weapons. Before anyone compares Brady's 1st season to Cassel's remember who Brady was throwing to when he won it all in 2001 and who Cassel threw to last year.

    Posted by fifty8th January 22, 09 01:16 PM
  1. Dan, he did just as well as Brady? Really? You are either joking or lack essential critical thinking skills. Look at the stats. Brady had 50 TD passes in 07, Cassel had 22 in 08. That is a difference of 28 TD passes. Brady also threw for 1,200 more yards, and went 16-0, rather than Cassel's 11-5. Look, I like Cassel, but saying he did just as well as Brady is beyond ridiculous. If you truly believe that, then its time to go back to grade school for a while.

  1. (55) and (58) seem to take two extremes.

Brady 2001 v. Cassel 2008: Brady had much less talent surrounding him, but much more prior experience; Cassel had better talent, but basically zero gametime experience.

That said, I think Cassel actually has nearly as much talent as Brady, and, if he were the starter in 2009 (I'm not saying he should be or will be) might surprise some folks here.

  1. Most of you posters are FRAUD FANS. Typical of Boston constituents, you're ready to throw the greatest football player this region has ever seen under the bus because you can "relate" to him. These athletes live in a different realm than us. Just because Tom Brady isn't coming down to Sully's Tavern and talking to you about your day at the factory doesn't mean he doesn't love football or isn't committed to winning. Just because his girlfriend isn't hanging out with your fat wife on 80's night doesn't mean he isn't better than Cassel. PLEASE ROOT FOR ANOTHER TEAM.

  1. So Tom Brady winning 3 Super Bowls, winning 2 SB MVP's, a regular season MVP, setting passing records, and going 16-0 in the regular season isn't good enough for Boston sports fans??!! You're joking right? If he retired today he would be in the NFL Hall of Fame. Let's try not to drive our HoF players out of town ok? We know the injury drill around here. Tom doesn't have to say a word to anybody if he doesn't want to. His biggest crime is dating Giselle Bundchen? I think every straight male on this planet would commit that crime. Let's leave Brady alone, let him rehab, and win the Super Bowl next season for a Patriots 50th Anniversary present ok?

  1. Has anyone reported that the cream is a Canadian product, not available in the US? There would be no point to give an interview about in here, so why is everyone all over him about it?

  1. The anti-Brady comments on here amaze me and frustrate me, but in the end, if there was a poll, we would realize that these idiots only make up a very small contingent of the Patriots fan base. The vast majority of fans realize what he means to this team, and realize that he doesn't owe them anything personally, and can't wait to see him back on the field next year. Even the majority of fans of rival teams that hate the Patriots appreciate Brady more than some of the morons who post here.

  1. @58

A better comparison between Cassel (and Cassel currently is no Brady) is how the fared through their first 15 games as a starter. Cassel's production is very comparable to Brady's. In fact more than 500 more passing yards.
