ESPN: Broncos hire McDaniels as head coach

Posted by Mike Reiss, Globe Staff January 11, 2009 09:40 PM

The Denver Broncos have reached an agreement to hire Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels as their new head coach, ESPN's Chris Mortensen reported tonight.

The Globe has since confirmed the report [updated 11:55 p.m.].

The Denver Post is also reporting that Patriots special assistant/secondary coach Dom Capers is under strong consideration to join McDaniels' staff [updated 11:55 p.m. to reflect that Capers is under consideration, not a certainty to be hired].

The Globe has not confirmed the news regarding Capers.

  1. I dont see McDaniels as an upgrade over Shannan, but I guess management had to do something.

I wish McDaniels good luck and hopefully he can be one of the few coaches that succeeds after the Patriots

  1. Great hire by the Broncos, McDaniels will be missed. It will be interesting to see who replaces him.

  1. Thanks for all the hard work with patriots. Josh, wish you best luck with your new job.

  1. Terrible news! Hopefully the Pats don't also lose Pioli to Denver or KC.

    Mike,

Any preliminary idea on who might be promoted to replace Josh McDaniels as OC?

Great job on the blog this season!

  1. Let the raiding begin.... Pioli is next.

  1. You know, I wish Josh McDaniels all the luck in the world (except for when he's playing the Pats), but I wish other teams would not pluck our coaching staff dry every year.

  1. Wow. Just another whole we need to fill here...we should at least get Romeo back as a D coach, 'cuz we are gonna need help everywhere...the players love him...maybe Cassel can stay on to be Brady's offensive coordinator...

  1. I'm Happy for Josh, but who's going to replace him??? Bill O'Brien, Dante Scarnecchia, or someone else? Personally, I think we need to replace Dean Pees with Dom Capers or even Gregg Williams...

  1. Hopefully he will lose most of his games and I will give all my bad luck yo him

  1. Not worried. Never been the high on McDaniels. A year ago (16-0 year), Moss and Brady cleaned up some poor play calling with ridiculous atheleticism. He will go that way of Romeo and Eric.

  1. Just as Democrats vote early in elections, the pessimists come out in droves when there is breaking news. Shanahan is a Hall of Fame coach so it would be hard pressed to find an upgrade over him. McDaniels is a young, fresh, brilliant mind who has helped mold Tom Brady into the player he is today (remember, they brought him on as the QB coach) and helped to create one of, it not the most, dominant offense in the history of the NFL. Though I'm sorry to see him go, I wish him the best of luck. As for replacing him, remember how people reacted when Charlie Weis left. Belichick will bring someone else in and they won't miss a beat.

  1. Well, the loss of Capers wasn't super huge...he got to be secondary coach (for one year) of one of the worst defensive backfields in the league! The loss of McDaniels hurts and I agree with Michael...i'm tired of other teams picking every piece of fruit that comes from the tree...it's redonkulous. Don't the Steelers have people to raid? (not yet I suppose) Or maybe the Colts?

I hope RAC comes back into the fold for our defense...

  1. Bye-bye and good luck. Why all the remorse here? You guys ripped him after last year's Super Bowl, remember?

  1. Good luck Josh. Still think the Broncos made a mistake on Shanhan. If you take Capers, I wold counter that with Romeo returning. I don't think Mc Daniels is ready

  1. Hello Pat? Is it not the deffense that needs help?

  1. More concerned about the potential to lose Pioli, but in conjunction with Daniels, a big hole for the organization to fill.

Somewhere in the ranks of ball-boy, a new assistant is about to be born.

    Kraft, Belichick will handle it.

  1. I understand picking McDaniels with Cutler/Marshall...but Denver needs help on D...he wants Philly's coach, will be interesting to see how that goes (and whether RAC becomes a contender). He's gotta win over the locker room also, and that won't be easy there.

  1. josh gone then get saban (alabama) back or me or you hmmm

  1. I will miss him being us a lot but I wish him luck. He deserves it.

  1. He's too inexperienced to be head coach. Prepare for a few years of 8-8 in Denver, along with a young, high maintenance QB who I bet money won't respect Josh's own youth and inexperience.

  1. Well, guess what... we have to play Denver on the road next season... won't that be interesting? Can't wait to see the handshake!

  1. How about Urban Myers from the university of florida him and BB are great friends

  1. The staff is getting picked clean. Up till now, I thought Capers might move in to fill the void, but he's gone too. How much can Belichick carry on his shoulders?

Posted by Joe Schmoe January 11, 09 11:46 PM
  1. I hope Scarnecchia gets the promotion....he deserves it the most I think and you know that the Patriots like to hire from the inside.

  1. Hmmm. This is shaping up to be an interesting off season for the Patriots. McDaniels gone; Pioli going; a defense that is getting worse each year. Did any one see Asante today. You think that Pats made an error in judgment there? Tom Brady's health going forward. The window of opportunity is precariously close to shutting down altogether. In Bill We Trust? In Kraft We Trust? This is a period of major transition in 2009. Very major, or we will not be able to keep up with the other beast in the AFC, the Steelers. Oh, by the way, they have a system, too. And it may get them their sixth Super Bowl title. Food for thought.

  1. WTF, NE doesn't even make the playoffs and they still get raided. The Bronco's are big dummies. Good riddance. If there was ever the case of players making a coach look good, Mcdaniels face would be in the book.
Anything to try and get a piece of that BB, Kraft magic. Bowlen is the next Al Davis. Mark my words, he wants a young guy to push around. Another failed experiement, as for every Jon Gruden there's 100 Mangini's. Hey McDaniels, you're supposed to get the ring before you jump ship, otherwise you will probably never be in that situation again.
Repeat after me, "In the Krafts and Bill Belichek, I faithfully believe, and that's all that matters folks".

  1. who cares? Charlie Weis was obviously way better. Josh screwed us in the super bowl. I won't miss him at all.

  1. overall theyl be fine, will promote from within and move forward (sound familiar?).
it is too bad thou - mcdaniels/tb had a strong connection (tb/branch-like) and I was excited to see them work together again in 2009 (assuming the knee is ok).
also sounds like pioli is next thou.. irritating, but same deal.
maybe they can sign reiss on as the replacement so he can plug our defensive holes with adam seward and fernando bryant
also what pissed people off more in the eagles game, seeing asante nearly pick6 a second straight game after a season of oneal, or the fact that he caught an eli ball so easily. get paid.

  1. I have no axe too grind good luck to Josh and Dom!!! I say just bring back Crennell see how Pees does on the offensive side of the ball....Or hire Martz! He needs too re-establish his ability too coach. We still have the best Head coach in football,I don't know if Pioli is staying or going but in either case the Patriots generally hire from within, but if they want to have fun they should hire Shanahan and Crennell and Martz!!! Shanahan moves to the Front Office too replace Pioli if he leaves..Laugh if you will but Mike is one of the finest evaluators of talent to ever coach.Bring in martz as a OC and Crennell as DC..

  1. sophron,

Bowlen has never played a heavy hand on the day to day operations of the Broncos. He is known as one of the best owners to work for in the NFL. He will never become an Al Davis type...there is only one Al Davis (thank God).

That doesn't make this a good hire; however, after going .500 in the last three seasons and not making the playoffs once it was time to make a change.

The Broncos will be benefited greatly on defense by the fact that they have a very young offensive core in place and can therefore spend nearly all of the draft picks and FA moves in the upcoming drafts on defense.

  1. I guess, if you work in Patriots Organization, then one day, you have a chance to become a head coach for NFL team. but If you work for other teams such as Colts.. stelers...etc.. no chance. Colts offinsive cordinator, never get any considiration to become a head coach, cause people konw, that Manning runs the offense not OC, may be they should give him different responsibility.. :-) .. and in stelars, they have one of the great defensive mind, Dick Labeau.. how come he is not a head coach, Jimmy Jonson from Philly... even though his assistant Giants DC, he getting condiration.... I thinks its good for Patriots, because, that attract people and they dream mican come true to become a head coach.. Love the way Belichick runs the team... I still thi nk PPiooli is overrated, because, even though you get players, someone still need to coach them... and thats what Belichick does.

Posted by Pawan January 12, 09 07:53 AM
  1. Over-rated and over his head. He will fail in Denver like Romeo and Charlie.

Posted by Steve January 12, 09 08:07 AM
  1. But maybe he won't cheat like Belichick does.
