RAVENS LOSS CREATES FOUR-WAY ROTATION FOR PATRIOTS DRAFT POSITION: With the Ravens losing to the Steelers in the AFC championship game, they will revert to their original draft position, 26th overall. The Ravens are part of a four-team cluster with 11-5 records which includes the Patriots (23rd), Falcons (24th) and Dolphins (25th). Those four teams will rotate in each round of the draft. From a Patriots perspective, the team will pick 23rd in the first round, then will be in the 26th spot in the second round, and in the 25th spot in the third round and so forth. Had the Ravens advanced to the Super Bowl, they would have picked 31st or 32nd in each round regardless of their 11-5 record.
REPORT: DOM CAPERS LANDS IN GREEN BAY: Dom Capers, who served as special assistant/secondary coach for the Patriots in 2008 and was not expected to return to the team in 2009, has accepted a position to become the Green Bay Packers' defensive coordinator, the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel reports.
JARVIS GREEN FUNDRAISER TONIGHT IN FOXBOROUGH: Patriots defensive end Jarvis Green is hosting a fundraiser Monday night at Tastings in Patriot Place (7-10 p.m.), with proceeds going to a group of National Honor Society students from Foxborough High School planning to spend their February vacation helping victims of Hurricane Katrina. The Patriots will be picking 23rd, not 24th
Mike I'm pretty sure with the Cardinals advancing the Patriots will pick #23 in the 1rst rd. So if there is a 4 team rotation The Patriots just got robbed as an 11-5 team who didn't advance to the playoffs I don't think they should be part of any rotating slots for the draft,I understand the theory of the lesser record teams who go to the playoffs and fail reverting to their numerical slot.Thats a form of rewarding a team for losing in the Playoffs and penalizing a team that doesn't make the playoffs!!!
Hi, I believe that the PATRIOTS pick 23rd in round 1. Atlanta, Miami and Baltimore were all playoff teams and thus the PATRIOTS are at the top of the rotation in the first round. Then they drop to last in the rotation in round two and the other are bumped up a slot as the rotation kicks in.
You guys are all over it. It is 23rd in the first round, not 24th. I was working off an old sheet. The rotation has now been corrected. Thanks for pointing it out.

Mike, what's the deal with Capers? Does "was not expected to return" mean he was fired? And if so, why?
Mike, I might have missed this somewhere, but what is the story with Dom Capers? I read the news that he left for Green Bay, but why did it seem like he didn't really contribute last year? At the time of the signing I thought, "Man, what a good pick-up," but all year long his presence wasn't felt. Was it just me? I feel like there's some behind-the-scenes stuff going on with this story. Am I right?
Wish I had more answers on Capers, slackfarmer and matt. Reading between the lines, it seems like it just wasn't a good fit.

The Pats defense declined this year over last. Yes, injuries played a role but I don't believe that the secondary position players really improved year over year and that was supposed to be where Capers was to have made his biggest impact. I say bring back Crennel and get to work rebuilding the D. I watched 2 teams last night that are light years ahead of the Pats although as an aside I am waiting for teams to start paying the Steelers back for their head shots that put players out of games.
I would guess that in the Capers situation, him being a head coach in the past, it just did not work for him to be in a position where he had to answer to Dean Pees, the DC.
Just my guess.
Mike, Arizona has the 21st pick in the first round if they win the Super Bowl will New England move from 23rd to 22 nd in the 1st round ?
Have you guys paid attention to the Patriots draft picks. All of the picks two years ago were cut except for the first round pick. The year before that, the second round pick, Chad Johnson was cut. This year, their second round pick was inactive for most of the year. Other than their first round pick, don't worry about their other picks because they are probably going to screw up again.
Milwaukee Journal Sentinel also stated that "Capers spent the past year as special assistant/secondary under Belichick, but the two did not mesh well and Capers was allowed to pursue other work."
Mike,
Capers was our DC last year. Tuna did not bring him back this season after he took over. That speaks volumes to me. Plus Joey Porter had 17.5 sacks this year versus being invisible last year. Just one example but it looks like Dom's best days are behind him. Good luck Green Bay.
Mike-I know it's the rule but this doesn't make sense. Why wouldn't the Patriots draft ahead of all the other 11-5 teams? The rest of the 11-5 teams all made the playoffs.Wouldn't it seem to fair to let the Pats draft ahead of all the playoff teams regardless?
Eddy, the fact that Arizona is in the Super Bowl is what moves the Patriots from 24 to 23. Whether they win or lose has no impact on the Patriots first round pick because now the Cardinals will be picking either 31st or 32nd.
BTW, Happy Birthday to Junior! 40 year-olds can't play linebacker in the NFL, can they?
Mike, with the number of coaches leaving the Patriots this year,
the thought went through my mind that maybe, just maybe,
they know something about Brady and his return next year.
Could it be that they see Brady may not return in full next year
and are taking advantage of opportunities now to better their own careers
because they know Brady/Patriots may not be so good next year?
Panic! Utter panic by people who speculate about Brady's health, mental state, intentions. Some who blog on this site might as well state the obvious, you have no faith in the same guy who took the team to 4 super bowls and won 3. ARGGGG!!!!
