MOCK DRAFT SEASON HAS ARRIVED: The NFL Draft is scheduled for April 25-26 -- with rounds 1-2 on the 25th and rounds 3-7 on the 26th -- and the following three months are likely to be filled with mock drafts. SI.com's Don Banks offers up his first mock draft and his pick for the Patriots in the first round is Wake Forest CB Alphonso Smith.

SAMMY MORRIS HEADED OVERSEAS: Next week, Patriots RB Sammy Morris will travel overseas to visit American soldiers on a 10-day tour to support the troops. The Super Sunday Tour will include visits to numerous bases throughout Iraq and Kuwait and will extend to include visits on Super Bowl Sunday. Sammy’s brother, Brien, is a staff sergeant in the Air Force.

TE BENJAMIN WATSON RAFFLES SUPER BOWL TICKETS: Patriots TE Benjamin Watson is raffling off two Super Bowl tickets to benefit his "One More" Foundation. The online raffle can be found here, with the deadline to enter Jan. 28.

  1. Yea, another Lilliputian CB is just what the doctor ordered.... Banks' mock is horrible, the talent on the board after the Smith pick is so much better than him.

When will people understand that you build a D front 7 and the DBs will then fall into place.

  1. None of the mock drafts last year had Mayo going to the Pats

  1. While I do think the Patriots will add a corner--either through the draft or via free agency--I don't think they'll pick a CB with their #1 draft choice. They used a round #2 and a round #4 last year on corners (and it was basically Richardson's rookie season), so I think they'd prefer to develop who they already have.
I have no idea if DL Everette Brown would be a good 3-4 fit, but I could see the Patriots drafting him if he's still available. Same with DL Peria Jerry and DL Sen'Derrick Marks.
If LB James Laurinaitis can fit into the 3-4 ILB position, he'll likely be another option.
With all the free agent OL coming up, I wouldn't be surprised if the Patriots drafted OT Jason Smith if he were still available. A more remote pick would be G Duke Robinson.
It'll be interesting to see what they do.

  1. get ready for a beating on this pick he's small like 5'9" small @ 190lbs. He was compared to Hobbs as far as size and skill by the NFL network guys.
Don also has the Cards picking 31st so we'll see

  1. Is there anything so utterly useless as a mock draft? It's just People or Us for dudes.

  1. Hi Mike,
I think I'd be ecstatic if Mel Kiper's mock comes true and the Pats have their choice Brian Cushing or Larry English. I'll get a better idea after the senior bowl tonight.

  1. www.nepatriotsdraft.com has a good database of lots of the mocks out there and who they have the Pats taking. He only updates it like once a week though.

  1. From what I hear on National Football Post, TE/DE Connor Barwin sounds exactly like a Patriots' sort of player. Given his versatility, it's unlikey he'll fall as far as us, but Mike, do you think we might be considering him as a possibility?

  1. If I were in charge of Pats and Brady is OK, you have to trade Matt Cassell while he is on the high end. So heres what I would do, trade Cassell to SF for their 10th pick, swap 1st round picks, and take SF 3rd pick for next year. 10th pick Rey Maualuga.
Guys I like in this draft are Clay Matthews, Victor Harris Darius Butler.
Another thing we can do, is resign LaMont Jordan, trade Maroney to Cleveland for this years 2nd rounder. The secret of this years draft is the second round.

  1. i'm not a big fan of the draft overall. there are a couple of players that i don't see dropping as far as the patriots that Banks has available, Moreno and Laurinaitis. I don't see the Pats passing on those as value picks though Alphonso Smith is a great selection, too. He'd be a perfect fit to the Pats defensive backfield. If we did get a second first round pick, I'd personally like to see the Pats draft Percy Harvin. I see him as having a lot of potential in improving special teams and adding a different sort of weapon on offense. A grouping of Moss, Welker, Harvin, Morris, and Watson has to be a scary prospect in terms of speed, ability to run the ball, and make a play through the air.

  1. whatever we do it won't matter unless - WE GET TO THE QUARTERBACK!!!!!!! and put him on his butt more often.

big lack of pressure this year was why we gave up a lot of key third and longs.

just get another impact player like MAYO - i dont care where he lines up.

  1. If the draft were to held this weekend I would go with Larry English, OLB, Northern Illinois and pass rusher extraordinaire with the Pats 1st Rd pick at #23 and Louis Delmas, S, Western Michigan with #47. Senior bowl on tonight at 7 and you'll see them. Both of these kids can play.

  1. Mock Draft Expert = Weatherman. What other job lets you constantly be wrong, and keep your job? Yeah, useless.

  1. You heard it here first - James Laurinaitis is this year's stiff! He will work out great but he can't play at the next level, too small, too slow, not half as good as former OSU LB A.J. Hawk who is bigger and faster ....and an average NFL LB.

  1. What the Pats really need to do is trade up so they can get Gholston....
Oops, sorry wrong year but the same insight...

  1. Look for the Pats to go hard on defense. A hard hitting safety is a must who can cover to some degree and then look for a d-lineman, and then a wideout. We won't get a 1st for Cassel but we will get a 2nd and a third this year and a third next year from the Chiefs or someone else. Jordan will sign elsewhere and Maroney will remain with Patriots. The cornerbacks are set with Wheatly who came on strong until he got hurt against the the Colts and Wilhite payed very well once in the lineup. Meriweather looks to have a nack for blitzing and Crable will help along with Thomas and Seymour and others. Vegas has favored us to win the bowl.

  1. Gholston was a combine star that played DE/OLB. Malaluga is a ILB that can cover TE,RB's, and rush the Qb. If people look at him to play OLB he will end up like Gholston. I just don't see us passing up what could very well be the next Seau and replacement for Tedy. I think he is worth Mayo money and a #10 pick. If it would'nt cost to much to go get him. Alphonso Smith is 5'9" and a playmaker.

  1. The name says it all: MOCK draft. What a mockery. No one had the Pats taking Logan Mankins or Jerod Mayo so why would any of them be right now? I don't care who they take, just use all 7 picks on defense (since half of them will be on IR anyways).
