Hobson nearly returned
TAMPA – Linebacker Victor Hobson nearly re-joined the Patriots in early December. At the time, the Patriots had been ravaged by injuries at the position and Hobson – who had been with the team in training camp but was cut before the regular season began – was an emergency option.
Although he took an official free agent visit, he passed on the chance to return.
“They had injuries and felt like I was a guy who could come in right away and help,” Hobson said Tuesday. “But you have that part of you that is saying ‘if I can come in and help right away, why couldn’t I have helped all year long?’”
Hobson was still stung by the way his situation unfolded at the end of training camp.
What appeared to be a promising beginning – he signed a one-year deal and transitioned from Jets 3-4 outside linebacker to Patriots 3-4 inside linebacker – ended on a sour note when he was passed on the depth chart by rookie Gary Guyton.
Hobson was cut and missed most of the 2008 season. When the Patriots called in early December, Hobson also received interest from the Bengals. He chose the Bengals over the Patriots and was with them for two weeks before being cut.
Hobson since has landed with the Cardinals, signing a two-year deal. He’s been a reserve for Arizona but has enjoyed the team’s playoff run.
“You can never predict the way a season will go,” Hobson said. “That’s the funny thing about this game.”

I'm happy for him. After being rejected by the Jets, Pats, and Bengals he lands in the superbowl.
Goes to show you how close some players are to returning, and just because the Pats call doesn't mean they're automatically willing to join.
Too bad. I thought, and somehow still do, thet he could be a valuable player.
I'm sorry, I just find it hard to believe he turned down playing for NE to sit at home and wait for a call from Arizona. Something tells me he's streching the facts.
I wish he had.he is a great player.our LB,s are getting old,and slow.except mayo.guyton, and crable have shown they are solid backups like woods, and alexander.we need more mayo,s on the team.
I really hoped that Hobson would work out with the Patriots, but Mayo's (and Guyton's) immediate impact made him expendable. The fact that he was cut from the Bungles speaks volumes.
I wonder how hard it is for Belichick to get his players to believe in the "team" concept, when the players know in the back of their mind that they can be coldly cut with no explanation?
Apparently not very hard, since his players have been buying into the team concept for about nine years now.
