Disclaimer: I only know this from playing the Madden video game, so it could be different in the NFL...
You would never take Joe's suggestion (sign Cassel to a long term deal) in Madden because when you trade a player, the entire signing bonus counts against the cap for the team that trades him away (Patriots) in the year following the trade.
I always assumed that is why it wasn't discussed as a possibility.
Thanks Mike...should be a fun, but complicated offseason for the Patriots.
Dave is right - if a player is traded, all remaining pro-rated signing bonus accelerates into the current cap year. This to me is the biggest impediment to NFL trades. The owners should figure out a way to trade the cap hit as well.
