Posted by Mike Reiss, Globe Staff January 13, 2009 12:58 PM

Every Tuesday on Boston.com, questions from Patriots fans are answered as part of a weekly mailbag. This week's mailbag has been posted and includes some of the following topics:

  • What next for the Patriots at offensive coordinator?

  • Scott Pioli, his role in picking the talent, and what it would mean if he leaves.

  • What is stopping the Patriots from signing Matt Cassel to a long-term extension?

  • Identifying an area that safety Brandon Meriweather can improve: his strength.

  • A look at the positioning of some of the Patriots' draft choices.

    1. Re: Mailbag, Question from Joe re: signing Cassel to a long term deal...

Disclaimer: I only know this from playing the Madden video game, so it could be different in the NFL...

You would never take Joe's suggestion (sign Cassel to a long term deal) in Madden because when you trade a player, the entire signing bonus counts against the cap for the team that trades him away (Patriots) in the year following the trade.

I always assumed that is why it wasn't discussed as a possibility.

    1. Thanks Mike...should be a fun, but complicated offseason for the Patriots.

    1. Dave is right - if a player is traded, all remaining pro-rated signing bonus accelerates into the current cap year. This to me is the biggest impediment to NFL trades. The owners should figure out a way to trade the cap hit as well.
