Mangold's insight

TAMPA -- Patriots nose tackle Vince Wilfork enters the final year of his contract in 2009. If an agreement can't be reached between Wilfork and the Patriots -- and Wilfork winds up elsewhere -- there is at least one player who won't be disappointed: Jets center Nick Mangold.

Mangold is making the rounds in Radio Row today at Super Bowl XLIII, and he shared his insight on what makes Wilfork (6-2, 325) such a tough matchup.

"He's the type of player you never want to see, and the fact I have to play him two times a year is miserable," Mangold said. "The thing about it is that for his size, he has the uncanny ability to move. You get a lot of guys who are big, and just stand there and take a pounding and don't move. But the fact he can move and be shifty -- which you don't use too often when describing Vince, but I'm going to put it out there -- is fantastic. He's a heck of a player."

  1. What is the status of any type of contract negotiations with Wilfork? I'm a bit surprised the Pats haven't moved quicker to sign him.

  1. it would be rediculous not to sign Wilfolk ....I would hope to a long term contract when they do sign him... He is the heart of our defense......You don't have to ask an apposing player .....just watch a game !!!!

  1. Dick, Jeff,

I am referring to your names - it is not a suggestion. I think the Pats value Wilfolk differently than Samuel, Wilfolk is without question one of the top three players in his position. While Samuel is a better than average corner, what did he do this year with the Eagles would make you think he is worth 10 Million per year? The much maligned Hobbs had nearly as many picks (3), but was much better in run support and Hobbs also is an elite kick returner. While I do agree that the Pats would love to have Samuuel back, Wheatley and Wilhite looked good for first year position players and by next year we will see if their play will quiet the nay sayers.
