McDaniels interviews with Browns

Posted by Mike Reiss, Globe Staff January 2, 2009 05:25 PM

Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels interviewed for the Cleveland Browns head coaching position today, a league source confirmed. The Cleveland Plain Dealer reported on McDaniels' interview earlier today.

McDaniels is also scheduled to interview for the Denver Broncos head coaching job on Sunday, the source said. That interview will be held in the New England region.

McDaniels has no other interviews scheduled at this time.

  1. Seems to me like this is the end of an era. Pioli is gone, Brady will never be the same, and we are losing McDaniels. I think I am going to become a Dolphins fan now.

  1. This guy is so not ready to be a head coach... Think Mangini only more green. He still has alot to learn about being an Offensive Coordinator.

  1. So long Carl, nice knowing ya.
    FRAUD FAN!

  1. The end of an era simply means the beginning of another...

  1. Carl, if you're going to switch allegiances because an offensive coordinator and maybe a vice president is leaving, then you were never much of a fan to begin with. As for your comment about Brady, that is purely speculation on your part without the benefit of any facts to support your opinion. Why did you remain a fan after Crennel and Weis left? Surely that was as major a departure as McDaniels and Pioli should they leave.

Besides, if you're going to root for a new team you ought to pick one that's not about to lose their most important person in management, since that seems to be a major factor in your thinking.

  1. In Bill I trust, the rest are just sidekicks...

  1. I wish Scott and Josh a Happy New Year and all the best with their new employer in Cleveland...It's a guarantee they'll be hired by the Browns. Nothing will change here...Bill will continue to manage the Pats, and we'll be in the Super Bowl next year with Brady at QB. Mike Martz would be a capable replacement for Josh as Offensive Coordinator. With our talent, he'll be extra creative with his play calling.
Don't be surprised if Romeo returns to the Pats as Defensive Coordinator.

  1. Never fear. As long as we have Bill.....the rest will just fall into place.

  1. I actually have had a big issue with the offense over the past two years. In theory the offense has an advantage over the D because the D doesn't know the play but with all of the empty backfields over the past two years you lose the threat of the run completely. I know some folks will say, well, they don't know what pass is coming but that doesn't matter to any Defenders committed to rushing the passer. You just made it easier for almost half of the D and that's not a good idea. On occasion, sure, that can make some sense, but any regular use of the empty backfield is stupid and I think McDaniels has fallen in love with that set too often. Weiss had his "what were you thinking moments" but at least he was unpredictable.

  1. Geesh. Are the Browns trying to make up for their firing of Bellicheck twenty years ago or what? Hire Romeo...he stinks. Sign a bunch of players....to no avail. They fire Romeo and now they are looking a Pioli, Manginius, and McDaniel. Hey Lerner, I heard Danny Villa is free now.

Talk about getting dumped and dating your ex's sister.

    Good riddance.

  1. I'm not a big fan of McDaniels. I wish him the best, but he is no great loss.

Posted by NoNoNobama January 2, 09 07:43 PM
  1. Jared, I feel you, it really stunk last year having to watch the highest scoring offense in NFL history. I too wish they had played less spread offense and scored fewer points.

    Posted by pmy8811 January 2, 09 07:46 PM
  1. Jared - you do realize that the Patriots were SIXTH in rushing offense, right?

McDaniels is a smart guy, there's no doubt about that. He's done a great job, but there's something to be said about a 32 year old head coach in the NFL. He could use a few more years of seasoning and really be ready to become a great one. What's the rush?

  1. I predict a 3-13 record next year. I only root for playoff teams. Maybe if your QB spent a little more time rehabing instead of chasing Gisele around town the Pats might have a chance next year. When the Patriots make the playoffs I will be a fan. Until then in Chad Pennington I trust.

  1. I agree with you regarding the OVERE use of the empty backfield set with the shotgun formation. And I think that this is one of McDaniels biggest weaknesses, and he has many. On far too many occasions, with Mcdaniels as OC, the team has had to go for field goals instead of TD's when in the red zone because of stupidity like this, when an offensive set, from under center, with a back in, or even multiple backs, forces defenses into thinking of more possibilities than just the pass.

McDaniels has a dislike, for whatever reason, of using play action, especially in the red zone and especially on 1st or 2nd down.

All; that being said, I would like to send a message to the Cleveland Browns. PLEASE HIRE MCDANIELS AS YOUR HEAD COACH. PLEASE TAKE HIM AWAY FROM US.

  1. ATTENTION CARL:: First of all, Dan Marino had similar tough injuries, and was one of the greats up till the end of his career........Brady can do the same......he's about accuracy and judgement, not mobility. Until they injure his brain, we've got one of the best QB 's of all time still in place. Secondly, Pioli and Belechick had a deal where they both must agree on a player before they bring him in. As long as Belechick is one half of that equation with any new GM, expect this team to be at the very least "playoff calibre" for a long time. Lastly, why don't you move to Miami...I'll pay for your plane ticket.

  1. I doubt he would take the job, but if he would, and as much as I cant stand him, he has a great offensive mind (No, not McDaniels)....hire Mike Shanahan as offensive coordinator.

  1. Jared, I saw that last year right away. I knew we would have a tough time with this
16-0 thing with all the stress in the interviews and playing not to lose at times, but what got me right away was we showed the league what we were about right away as if no one could stop us. We completely gave up on the running game, no backs in the back field, and by midseason the league figured us out, and came at Brady full force. We struggled the rest of the season, becoming more of a finesse team, and not able to play well in bad weather. I knew we needed to be more physical this year and we have. Brady or no Brady, we need a running game much like we saw this year to keep the defense honest. Then if Brady lets the backs run more, tabout 40% or more, the defense has to start guessing, making him and Moss in particulary, more dangerous. Phil Simms could score with anyone, and with Parcels he became much more run oriented making him even more dangerous, at least if you want to win the big games. I agree with you. The past two years we are becoming more Peyton like and he was big in the regular season, but in his losses in 8 or so playoff games, his team avg about 12 points in those losses, and they always blamed the ir defense, and Brady's loss being a Manning like QB last year was14 points in the SB. So much for big time regular season offenses.

  1. Lee, I would love a ticket to Miami. I hear the weather is great down there. I love the people who think the Patriots team and management people are indisposable. Brady will not be the same and Cassel will not be on the team next year unless they want to take a HUGE salary hit. I will take Pennington over Brady who will be a lame duck next year. Everyone here is in denial the Pats are rebuilding not a playoff team.

Posted by Carl Nemes Jr January 2, 09 08:35 PM
  1. If you ask me I think Brady will be calling his own plays next year so, so long to Josh. as far as Pioli goes I think that would be a loss but lets remember the Pats have built a machine greater than the sum of its parts.

  1. Any coach or player that has left the Patriots organization under BB has been a total bust. From Charlie Weiss to Deon Branch, Romeo Crennel to Ty Law, Mangini to Daniel Graham.
This tells me that BB has created a system that the players and coaches buy into and that they are totally lost once they leave. Look at the job he did this year. He should be coach of the year. He makes every coach and player raise their game to a higher level, once they leave they revert back to a run of the mill player or coach.

  1. Rebuilding? Carl please go root fot the Dolphins will ya. You have no clue.
You only root for playoff teams? What an embarrassment as a fan!
The Defense is being rebuilt, I'll give you that. Not the whole team though.

As for Brady I didn't hear anyone complaining last year or the year before that when he was running around with Gisele.
Funny how he gets cheap shotted in the knee and all of a sudden he doesn't work hard anymore or he doesn't have the same fire.
Just goes to show how little you know.

Posted by Christian January 2, 09 09:41 PM
  1. Anyone think that if these people actually do leave, BB won't sit down with Mr Kraft and suggest one of his other buddies to take the job. Pioli already mentioned Iowa's coach Kirk Ferentz (BB disciple). Don't forget BB has more buddies in the business like Florida's Urban Meyer. I'm sure there are many more we have never heard of.

  1. For all of you responding to Carl Nemes, please keep in mind that he's the same genius that thought the Cardinals were going to destroy the Patriots a few weeks ago. Take his opinion for what it's worth.

Posted by Lance Jonn Romanoff January 2, 09 09:55 PM
  1. Folks, I keep saying, he's no loss if he goes. Do you understand the the talent McDaniels has to work with on the Pats? Your average OC (which Josh is) can make it work--jeesh, anyone of us could make it work. I promise you, he's no loss if he goes. It's Bill that's keeping this train rolling. Trust me.

Maybe we can get an OC that's not as predictable as Josh is. That's what Weiss brought to the table, unpredictability. I welcome someone new to the position. Also, I'd like someone a little more seasoned at the position.

Posted by Los Angeles January 2, 09 10:01 PM
  1. Didn't the team just rush for more yards than they had in many years? Empty backfield? Seems to me that SOMEBODY was back there.

Posted by riseup January 2, 09 10:10 PM
  1. Yeah McDaniels sure is horrible. After all, minus Brady the offensive was only the 5th in the league in YPG, 6th in rushing, and 8th in scoring. What were we thinking bringing him along and making him OC. He clearly needs seasoning, nevermind that he has the pedigree and has proven himself. Sure, let's get him out of here.

In all seriousness (yes that first paragraph was sarcastic), the loss of Pioli would have more of an impact on this team than the loss of McDaniel. He's a major piece of the puzzle in putting this team together.

  1. And there is no way in hell that Mike Martz would ever coach in New England.

  1. Dear Carl,
You are a disgrace to all Patriots fans and are no longer wanted. You are in the same vein as a Jets fan. You have been kicked out of the treehouse.
    Sincerely,

  1. Carl, you won't be missed. So long!
Mike Allen, some people's glass is half full, others are half empty. Why is your's completely bone-dry empty? Why can't you just enjoy the success the Patriots have had and will continue to have? Why do you always have to have somebody on the Patriots to hate? Is it because you're not really a fan?
Imscott, Steve M and Lisa Daniels got it right.
I wish Josh and Scott the best where ever they are next season.

  1. Hey Carl "I only root for playoff teams" Nemes ,

Bandwagon fans like you make me sick. Learn how to be a real fan, or don't be one at all. You are a disgrace to us REAL sports fans, who stick by their team through thick and thin, win or lose.

Have fun rooting for the Dolphins next year, you phony, fair-weather, FRAUD.

  1. Someone will take McDaniels' place. No one matters more to this team than Belichick.

  1. Carl, I would like to thank you for giving me the biggest laugh I've had throughout the holidays. Now, run along, as they must have a curfew at the institution you reside in - and remember, sharp objects are not allowed there, and so tear very carefully around that picture of Chad "I have no Super Bowl rings, all I have is a AFC East Champs baseball cap" Pennington; look longingly at that ragged photo of Chad this weekend as he'll look even worse after the Ravens batter him. I'll take Brady on one leg over a fully fit Pennington every time.

  1. I couldn't care less what non-Pats fans say, especially those posing as fans. I'm old enough to say I've been a Pats fan since 1960. Those were fun teams, and pretty good too, which epic winter battles against the Bills (and a crushing defeat at the hands of the Chargers in 1963). Gino, Babe, Larry, Houston, Jim - what a cast of characters and talent. Our team has a rich history. Even when they were terrible in wins and losses, they were an entertaining bunch. Lately, we've been blessed with BB and Tom, Tedy, Rodney, Vince and Vrabel, to name a few. And let's not forget Jerod! The Pats were the best team in the division by the end of the season, and next year they'll dominate again. With Tom back, they'll get their red zone passing offense back, not to mention deep passes. Let's enjoy the ride.

  1. Mr. Reiss, what OCs are available to take Mcdaniels spot if he leaves?
Do you know of any? The kid is good, but doesn't mean they can't do better.
As far as how well will the new coaches do next season, nobody knows.
DId anybody have a clue about Mike Smith down in Atlanta?
