Denver-based reaction to hiring of Josh McDaniels
A sampling of reaction from Denver on the Broncos' hiring of Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels as their head coach:
"Is McDaniels the answer? There will be questions for quite a while. This crucial decision must be absorbed, considered and critiqued for several days. The final analysis will not be made for several years. This we do know: McDaniels will become the first head coach of one of the four major professional teams in Denver to be carded at LoDo bars. He looks like a college student."
"This seems a fairly transparent attempt by Bowlen to recreate the magic of the Shanahan hire - the smart young offensive mind brought in to coach up the latest rocket man at quarterback."
"McDaniels played football at John Carroll University. He coached on an NFL team that finished a regular season with an undefeated record. He has coached on teams that have won Super Bowls in consecutive seasons. His first NFL head-coaching job is for a team who takes its nickname from a horse. See, McDaniels seems to be following the path of Hall of Famer Don Shula. ... The Baltimore Colts hired Shula, at age 33, to replace Weeb Eubank."
"It didn't to John Madden, who became coach of the Oakland Raiders at age 32. And youth proved no hindrance to Don Shula, hired by the Baltimore Colts at 33. Both men matured gracefully enough to end up on the steps of the Pro Football Hall of Fame."
"Oh, man, I think that's going to be great," Marshall said. "Our locker room definitely has changed from a very veteran team to young guys with good character, but at the end of the day, still young. And from that standpoint, to have a coach in there around the same age as the guys in the locker room, he can relate to things we're about; it makes it a little easier as far as the transition. A lot of the guys are excited."
"Broncos owner Pat Bowlen is taking a risk, a big one, on McDaniels. The Broncos new commander is a mere 32 and has enjoyed a blessed football life on the New England Patriots coaching staff. Is McDaniels an offensive genius? Or was he just lucky to stand on the same sideline with Tom Brady and Bill Belichick? We'll know soon enough."

Why does one of the Denver fans say they might hire Dom Capers too? I hadn't heard that.
It is being reported that Dom Capers is going with McDaniels and it makes perfect sense.
so all the patriots will have left working with Belichick is Dean Pee?
Brady should take over as OC with Romeo as DC.
And so is former 49ers HC Mike Nolan as defensive coordinator, right Mike?
Woody is SUCH a buffoon. That article is a thinly veiled threat to young Josh not to try and stonewall the precious press, all the while he's damning him with feint praise. Every time I read anything by Paige, he buffoons himself more than he does on TV, and that's saying a lot!
Hi Matt. Not sure on any hirings for Josh's staff. Have not been able to confirm any of it.

i hope this wont turn out like Mangini did....
Woddy Paige is an idot. whenever he comes on Around the horn, I either switch channel or mute him. He just hate Boston .. He call Josh a kid, and he himself is grandpaaa :-) ... idot...
I don't have time to read all the articles, but it sounds like all points are well founded. I had no idea that Shula and Madden were that young when they got hired. So I guess the lets wait and see is still the best approach. Of course, the biggest question is how well he will command the respect of his player, but he had a great mentor for that. I would venture a guess that a lot of BB's players don't hold a great love for the man, but they believe in his system and team approach to the a level I personally have never seen from players on a consistent, over-time, basis. If Josh can gather the same respect and surround himself with good football minds, then he should do well.
Is there any word out on the terms of Josh's contract? # of years?
What is the track record of Belichick colleagues after they leave Belichick? From Parcells to Crennel, Weis, and Mangini--NOT GOOD. There's been some success for those who go back to college. But if McDaniels and Pioli flourish in the NFL beyond the shadow of Bill, they will be firsts.
C'mon Mr. Reiss....quoting Woody Paige? He's an embarrassment to your fine profession.
lol.....I have to agree with "Classless"......it's impossible to take Woody Paige seriously
I think that the Broncos made a huge mistake. IMO, McDaniels has benifited from being part of the Belichick team, and system, for all of his years on the sidelines. In addition, and again it's only my opinion, he was the benefactor of having a team of WR's and QB unlike any other in recent years of the NFL. There was no one that was going to stop that offense from scoing other than the Patriots themselves.
On the plus side, Denver has a solid nucleous of offensive players already. The question in my mind is, if the team doesnt come out of the gate with a quick start, offensively, I believe the players will revolt, because of McD's youthful age and much younger lloking features. I believe this will be a mistake for the Broncos and a good thing for the Pats. McD held them back, IMO, with extremely eratic playcalling in the Red Zone and his failure, and ability to make quick adjustments to counter those made by experienced defensive coordinators.
Who will replace him? Belichick likes to promote from within but I dont see anyone in the organization, IMO, that is capable of taking that upward step.
Personally, and I think this will sound wierd, but if he would take a downward step, I'd go after Shanahan. Great offensive mind.
