NFL voter to Jerod Mayo: 'My bad'

Posted by Mike Reiss, Globe Staff January 3, 2009 08:25 PM

Patriots linebacker Jerod Mayo was named the Associated Press Defensive Rookie of the Year this week, earning 49 of the possible 50 votes.

The lone vote that Mayo didn't receive went to Bengals linebacker Keith Rivers, who was limited to seven games after a jaw injury cut his season short.

Michael David Smith of AOL Fanhouse contacted the voter who selected Rivers -- Jay Paris of the North County Times -- for his explanation.

Paris acknowledged to Smith that he made a mistake.

Later, in an email to the Globe, Paris said: "Tell Mayo I owe him one. My bad."

  1. between this and the pedroia thing, shouldnt something be done about the voting process for these awards?? i mean how can people who's vote matters so much be allowed to simply say "oops my bad"? looking bad theres no harm but with pedro, it cost him the mvp. kinda ridiculous if you ask me

  1. My bad? Are you kidding me? If you don't want to take a vote seriously, give your voting right to someone who cares! My bad? It's not like he gave it to someone who was even close to Mayo in performance.

  1. The guy has a responsibility and chooses Rivers? Come on. Lazy, lazy, lazy. The guy didn't do his research or watch much of the season... asleep at the wheel. The awards people need to kick this guy out and anyone who doesn't take it seriously. Hope these journalists don't get paid anything, but if they do, this guy didn't do squat. If it is an honor or recognition, let a hardworking up and comer at it and this bozo off.

  1. Shocker... North County Times covers the San Diego Chargers.

  1. Jay Paris needs to be made into an example. He (and the paper) should be removed from all awards voting - and San Diego should not be given any replacements.

  1. Players make bonuses based on awards like this, and this guy votes like he's auto-drafting a fantasy team.

It's no wonder players like Favre get into the probowl, and Manning wins MVP. There needs to be some more time and research put in by these voters rather then just going with their favorite player.

  1. If I understand it correctly, only about 50 voters get to pick the MVP? Why allow a clown like this to vote?

Give his vote to Mike Reiss!!

  1. Since this paper covers the San Diego Super Chargers, I think he saw Rivers as a voting choice and thought it was for Philip Rivers...I think that voting should be taken out of the writer's hands and put in the hands of the commish/NFL Office

  1. Inexcusable. I mean, it's not the end of the world but the guy should definitely lose all voting privliges.

  1. The whole system is crap. From College Football Champ to NFL MVP. Drew Brees and Albert Haynesworth get no votes and Peyton wins it. Come on. I don't know the answer, I do not think that it is fan voting (which is the only thing worse then AP voting). Paris should never be allowed to vote again and every AP vote should be printed with the name of the writer, make them accountable for their vote.

  1. I agree....his voting privliges should be REVOKED. He obviously put no effort into it at all. Voting for a guy who only played 7 games??.....he just took a wild guess.....it's because of guys like this that the fans despise the sports media

  1. Thank you Micheal David Smith for outing this guy. If he doesn't have a vote they should give him Paris'.

  1. Eliminate the writers from voting for anything...should come from the fraternity only...players and coaches

  1. The NFL should keep its awards and votes in-house, the sport is much bigger than the writers, although the press would like to think its the other way around.

Obviously, the media is more susceptible to bias and worse ethical violations with no regard or respect for the sport, as they prove during every single voting process from the yearly award to the HOF votes in other sports.

  1. Here is the full comment from Paris:

    Paris wrote:

I wish I had a good insightful reason for it. But it was just a mistake that I didn't realize until after the vote came out.

When it came time to turn in the votes Monday, I was working on a Chargers playoff piece on Philip Rivers at the same time. I switched back to my early DROY watch list, which included Mayo and Rivers, and was going back and forth from the two screens.

I had Rivers on my mind, kept Keith Rivers' name on the voting balloting, and deleted Mayo.

My bad. Obviously Mayo is the clear choice -- I'm a UCLA honk so giving Rivers' that vote is really troubling!

  1. The only way to get an honest vote in any award of this type, including MVP, is to let the players and coaches be the only ones allowed to vote. I believe that for the most part, they would be unbiased.

  1. The NFL should not control these awards. Offically these awards mean nothing to the league itself. They are entirely a media creation to begin with, so it makes the most sense for the media to continue to vote for them.

As much as I've heard a lot of Pat's bashing out of SD writers and journalists, lets cut this guy a little break. If you bother to read the article, it was a simple typo. He didn't just toss Rivers name on there without thinking. He though about it, chose Mayo, then accidentally submitted the ballot with Rivers' name on it. I wish he'd have double checked, but his intentions were correct, and Mayo got the award.

  1. Simple typo? Rivers is not even close to Mayo. It's not a than/then, their/they're situation. So when this guy makes bonehead journalistic mistakes, does he tell his editor, "my bad"? Newspapers really are dying.

  1. you guys are all taking this too seriously and anyways when you look at the stats rivers had 50 solo tackles 1 int 1ff and 1 pass defensed in only seven games where Mayo had 128 tackles four passes defensed and 1 ff, had rivers not got injured he was on his way to a good rookie season as a defensive player, still that doesn't excuse the mistake paris made but it's not that astonishing. Name your second pick for defensive rookie mvp besides mayo anyways.

  1. Well, considering this is the same guy who had Edinson Volquez on his NL Rookie of the Year vote this year, when Volquez wasn't, uh, a rookie, I think it's clear that this guy doesn't take his votes seriously. Why should someone who doesn't take the responsibility seriously continue to be rewarded for his poor work?
